i am very happy, as most of my girls have come back to the team. and i also have three new girls that have played before.
the girls came 4th last year so have gone into 12A this year (oh no) but hopefully will win just as much as they lose or even better win more then they lose lol
started training two weeks ago and all is going great. my team is also going to the Ballarat Total Girl Tournament on the 15th and 16th of March, which will give them a fun time away before the start of the season.
if anyone has an Under 12 girls team that wants a friendly game PM me :smartass:

I'm coaching arabjunior again in the U16s this year. We are in "a too many for one team not enough for two" situation atm. Anyone interested in a friendly pre-season pm me (we have no pitch until the end of March).
Little Miss Arab has started playing this year (U12 girls). Philly, I'll ask the coach if he wants to arrange a friendly.

For the rest of us it was a heinous weekend of heat and dust, not helped by the great Ballarat ice-shortage on Sunday.

we had a great weekend, girls only won three games out of 7, they played in the top grade (12A) but learnt alot from not winning all the time :)
the heat did get to them but all of them want to go back again next year :smartass:
yes we had no ice for the drinks on sunday and then just before the last game over the loud speakers they say that they have ice lol, abit too late for most teams as it was 2.30pm and only two more games to be played on each pitch.
i think the club will organise it abit better next year and we will take all the girls teams. already looking forward to it :smartass:

I wondered what ever happened to this thread.
So DD, some shaky ground there being team manager of DD Jnr's team.
Remember to be firm but fair with all of the players, I can recall my dad being coach of my team as a 12 year old and not only did i cop heaps from the other boys (as will DD Jnr that's what boys are like) but VictoryCross Snr thought nothing of making me captain and in charge of certain drills at training.
A harrowing experience and one that still pisses me of 16 years later!
DONT PLAY FAVOURITES.
Enjoy yourself, have fun and teach the kids.
Good luck

RunnaLittle there are alot of girl clubs that are good clubs but if you are looking for a family friendly club it is always best to go check them out, see what they are like and if you join one and are not happy then move your daughter the next season. i know alot of people think when you join a club you should support that club but i say think of your child first and club second.
the club i coach at is Carrum United which is just past Dandenong. four years ago we had one junior team, now we have six girls teams and 7 boys teams and all rooball (whatever they call it now) age groups. my daughter started playing in a mixed team when she was 9, and i do have to say if your child is under 10 then put her in a mixed team for a year or two as it builds up their skills and confidence.
i have one child in my team that is 9 years old (i coach under 12 girls)and she played in both her u8 mixed team (on saturdays) and my U11 girls team (on sundays)last year and i can already see that she will be a great player one day. i have five girls that played with the boys in their first year of football and they do stand out more then the ones that have never played with the boys, you can see they are not scaried of the ball or the players.
my girls have their first friendly game this weekend, they are very excited about this coming season and so am i LOL :smartass:

My son is playing another season , this time at Green Gully. We are much happier there than at Essendon Royals. Coach is brilliant and in only a matter of weeks he has really been great for my son. Finally a GREAT coach who has been able to identify the work my son needs and wants. We are impressed to the hilt and my son is very happy considering he left behind alot of good friends at Royals.

Royals are actually on the rise, just might need to replace a couple of coaches here and there but the majority are actually quite good in regards to SSG's and the right style of football.
Gully are simply exploding now and it seems all the better players are moving there at the moment.

Boys Metro U18 Super League kicks off this weekend with some quality match-ups across the board.
Essendon Royals and Brimbank City get the action under way 6.30pm Friday night at Darebin (DISC) followed immediately after by Fawkner Blues vs Casey Comets.
Sunday sees match-ups between South Melbourne and Springvale White Eagles at Bob Jane Stadium followed by the tie between Kingston and Keilor at The Grange.
Sunday afternoon's 3.15pm double-header sees Bulleen travel away to an understrength Green Gully affected by a school trip to Queensland while Brunswick City entertain South Springvale.
Should be an interesting round, I'll have my eye firmly fixed on results this weekend.

Sandringham and Brighton both struck me as quite good girls clubs when we played against them last year.
Not so sure about Ashburton. Their girls were playing on a desperately bad pitch, with no facilities. They are spread over a lot of different grounds. Their admin is ok (it is Bob Stensholt's club - an ALP MP and big supporter of the game, and his daughter plays there), but the club has grown much too fast for the infrastructure in the area.
I think the most important thing at the beginning is a coach whose style you feel comfortable with. You don't have a heap to do with the rest of the club, most of the time.

Not a bad start to the pre-season. Friendly match, we shipped one goal really early. I changed a couple of players round, blasted a couple for holding the ball too much, they put together a few nice moves and we won 2-1 with 2 other shots pinging of the crossbar.
Could be a fun season.
Just need to work on some set-pieces and corners (suitable for U16s) as we had nothing in that department.

Hectic day today.
Two friendlies for the boy. A friendly for the big girl, and a futsal semi-final for the little one.
I am TM for the U16 girls. We were supposed to kick off at 2.00 - and we did not get the pitch until 2.45. Pain in the bum.
We have had a lot of turnover - 6 new players - so it was interesting seeing them in action for the first time. We had 11 players, and our opponents had 25.

Fuck off. When they don't have the skills to beat 3 defenders by themselves and there are 3 teammates in great positions all easily reached with a short pass then they deserve a roasting.
You don't try to run the entire length of the field yourself. It wasn't a case of them being discouraged from learning to hold the ball at all, but jesus, they have to pass sometimes.

PS,
Youngest played 3rd practice game: Lost 2 nil despite dominating opposition. But our strikers didn't put away any of chances laid up to them. My son is playing an attacking role on the wing this year (after his Coach/Dad has played him mostly in defence for 4 years). Seems to have found his natural role and is playing much better here. Coach not too concerned about the scoreline as he has sought out very challenging opposition each week so the boys hit the ground running in Round 1.
Middlin played 10th practice game: Have mostly played other Super League teams but Sunday played an 'A' team from a higher age group. Won 5-0. Middlin played a solid game in centre of defence.
Eldest (16) playing 2nd year of ressies and getting a starting berth now which is fantastic! Spent a lot of character building time on the pine last year. Lost 2-0.

I don't know whether Futsal can be included here, but my son's team was involved in a cracker of a game on Sunday, for the under 9's
My son was in the semifinals last year. Their team was winning 3-2 and destined for the final. One player was away so we substituted this with another player from another team. She is a good player and was involved in the third goal. Anyway they were playing this team which was pretty good and has been on top all season (they were the first team and we were the fourth team).
The coach of the opposition wasn't happy and contested the substitution invoking rules that you couldn't substitute players at the last moment etc. etc.
So the game was suspended about 7 minutes from the end, and pandemonium ensued amongst some parents with the bemused look of the children which were having a good time.
The centre manager did not handle the thing well and he suggested a rematch. We refused and because we did not want to cause any more problems (it is a team of 9 year olds FFS) we decided to forfeit the match.
However some parents pulled their kids out in disgust and we lost the minor semi final. What also happened is that some of these kids that stopped playing created a huge hole in the team and we had to find new payers which were not as experienced and we started losing all our matches.
But slowly they regained confidence and form and managed to get into the finals.
Players of many teams know each other because they all go to the same school my son does, and they were playing one of this teams on Sunday. I know all the kids and I know the parents which I really like and I count as my friends.
However there is one niggling thing about this team. At some stage a decision was made to 'mix the kids' in different teams to encourage them to develop skills in playing with different children and adjust to other players they did not know etc. This team wasn't happy and decided that their kids had to stay in the same team. I thought that this was a bit precious. I wonder whether parents are projecting their anxieties on their children (I do that sometimes) when the children often are fine.
Anyway, this team had been together for two years and they read each other pretty well. We were playing them last Sunday for a semi-final. We were playing surprisingly well. We scored first. Then we copped one of the strange goals that happen in kids futsal when the keeper of the opposition team goalkeeper kicked the ball long and it bounced in our net while everyone was watching.
Then with one second to go we score. But too late it was disallowed.
Extra time. And with the golden goal rule. The time starts. The opposition runs forward, kick from the left the ball goes close to the line but our keeper manages to keep it out with what he later tells me was is little finger.
Lots of kids on the ball. It bounces free. One of our player takes the initiative! He's on his own! It's a one on one situation! He kicks, he scores!!!! We are in the final!
All the kids shake hands. One or two are disappointed but mostly OK and start to talk about Pokemon games and berating their parents about buying them a snake at the tuck shop.
I tried not to be, but considering the history of our team I am pleased.

Two games at the new club, and two wins and clean shees for my boy. 4-0 win against South Yarra last week, and 7-0 yesterday against Sunbury earning him his first trophy for his new club as it was a Club Challenge Cup thing. Some of the passing between the boys was amazing to watch, considering there is around 7 new players in the squad although 4-5 played together last year at a different club. The boy who pays CF is an Asian boy who has the most amazing control, skill and football smarts, I was astounded. Scored about 3 goals left & right foot set up a few. Truly was a joy to watch.

Three friendlies yesterday, but a much more manageable schedule.
Littlun against Clifton Hill. In spite of being U12, they have an adult-sized lass on the team who pretty much scores at will. 5-0 win. My girl is a natural left-footer, so she looks like getting a fair bit of game time, in spite of showing low athleticism at this stage.
Goalie boy conceded one in a 4-1 win. They don't win very often, so it was good for morale.
Big girls took on the team that finished top last season, after winning every game. They won't be meeting this season, as the other team has been promoted.
We have dropped to 12 registered players, and we were short 2 yesterday through illness and injury. Ended up putting one of the mums on, and using the opposition goalie (who got a much better working out playing against her own team).
The girls put in a solid effort in unpleasant heat with no subs. They have improved noticeably since last week. No-one to score though. My lass is up front, and hating it.
She scored a few last year, but she is not really striker material - more your opportunist grifter type.

Agreed. My son's U14's team now won't start till Round 2.
Not much thought put into the fixtures by the FFV. Starting everyone 1 week later would have made much more sense.
This issue with Orthodox Easter happens every year. (Or 3 out of 4 I think.)
Brunswick City, Oakleigh and Preston have all managed to get their Round 1 games postponed to the catch up round. So massive disruption all round.

DD Jr had his first ever game of competitive football. His team drew 2-2, which, IMO, was a valiant effort for a team with lots of newbies and 2 kids periodically vomitting. DD Jr scored a wonderful goal in the first half and was involved in some impressive passing that led to the second goal. Second half he played goalkeeper and spent most of the time twiddling his thumbs. My bro bet him $10 he couldn't score from his goalie position. Safe bet, that one.

First game of the season for my youngest. Glad to see she keeps up in her team. Her tackling has improved enormously, and she is showing thoughtful passing, which is rare at this level. Needs to chase with more energy.
They conceded a goal in the last minute of the first half; equalised half way through the second; conceded another; equalised again; then their defence fell totally apart and they conceded a third with about 5 mins to go. Their last good chance was muffed in a missed kick. Final result: down 3-2.
I'm pleased with the coaching style of this team -I think she will learn far more, far faster. Happy we made the switch.

U16 Ashburton
First match and lots of positives to take from it.
4 of our best were tired from having played U18's that morning, so we started with a bit of a weaker side. As per all our training games they were not switched on in the first 10 minutes and conceded two easy goals.
Then they switched on, had at least 60% of possession, some great play with good width, but lacked the killer blow. Had one curling shot destined for the top left tipped away from an OUTSTANDING save from the Mooroolbark goalie. Had two headers on target with just not enough venom and 2 others strikes saved. Got one back from our speedy counter-attacking forwards, but in the last 5 minutes we were pushing up with a 3-4-3 formation and copped a goal on the counter.
3-1 loss, but as i said we dominated the game and if it wasn't for the early period of the game I think we wouldn't have had the same pressure to press so hard.
Next week I think we'll start strong and then sub the guys who play in the morning off later in the game.
Shooting practice is the theme for this week.

Two games today. Little Miss Arab first up:
We scored a goal in the last minute of the first half; conceded an equaliser half way through the second; scored another; conceded again; then our attack got on top and we scored a third with about 5 mins to go. Their last good chance was smothered with some strong defence. Final result: up 3-2.
Arabjunior's team (the one wot I coach), weakened by injury, illness and orthodox Easter played with only eleven players. Fought hard but were outplayed and lost 4-0.

Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not! If there is a spooky similarity in the match reports from the round 10 fixture then we'll be better placed to judge.:whistling:

The 16 yo's ressies drew 1-1 on the Saturday.
He went off with some nasty studs/bruising down leg 10 mins from end.
Opposition scored the equalizer 3 minutes after my lad went off, (via a cross from the talented player mine had kept in check all game.
Youngest had a 0-0 draw and struggled to find form amongst the fast strong players with and against him.
Middlin had a BYE courtesy of the opposition's celebration of Orthodox Easter. Our strips haven't arrived yet but surprisingly we do have others at the club and could have played!!!!!

Season kicks-off in earnest for us tomorrow. (Our club was one of the ones that did not play in round one.)
All registration cards and strip are in order. All games at home, so no transport dramas.
Clud admin continues to disappoint - arrangements to mark up the second pitch fell apart, and as of last night, no-one had taken it on. Council has not mowed the grass either.
Little girl has an internal derby against the other team from her club.
Boy is playing with the Bs, on the grounds that he will get more of a workout as keeper in that team. Bit of a gamble. Coach could be embarrassed if the As opposition turns out to be stronger than he thinks. But no matter. The other goalie will need to be confident to play with the As when we go away.
Big girl is playing a team demoted from As last year. They won 2-0 last week. We already know kick-off will be late, due to FFV scheduling issues.

I think DD Jr is leaning towards putting in a full game for his footy team tomorrow, may be able to get to his U9 game for the second half, see what happens. This juggling of two sports is going to be tricky this year, but it's probably the only time we'll be able to do it, and DD Jr is loving playing both.

I did the same in under 9's. Played saturday Aussie rules and ended up winning a premiership and on sunday's played football. Couldn't keep on doing it cos aussie rules moved to the sunday and i was in one of the best under 9's team in the state at the time so i ended up choosing football. Was a fun experience though.

I feel like I have just sat an exam. Relief that the season is finally underway. All the i's dotted and t's crossed for my team manager role.
Next week we will even be back training at our home ground TG.
Little one (playing in the intra-club derby in an away strip) was on the winning side - 1-3. She played a direct role in setting up the second goal, putting through a nice ball from mid-field that found a player who passed to someone who scored. At other times she was confused and ball-watching. She played 3 different positions at different times of the game. She is clearly learning as she goes. Things are good.
Boy's normal team won 8-0 without him - coaches gamble paid off. He played in the Bs, where he kept a clean sheet (though one goal that went in was disallowed - perhaps because he had been flattened). His team won 2-0. Not sure how representative that is, as both goals were scored by a player borrowed from the team under them, and their clean sheet was in part due having a borrowed keeper. But it is nice for this team to start with a win, since many of them are new to the club and the game.
Big girl's team went down 0-3. It is remarkable how much they have improved with each game they have played. They were massively under the pump in the first half, and conceded twice with many shots saved by our first choice keeper. In the second half, we managed to get a lot more of the ball, and got a shot or two in. Could be a while before we find the net, but the improvement is visible. If only we had some subs - 40 min halves are bloody long.

Brimbank U12 def Sydenham Park 4-0 in a very solid display. Great passing and teamwork. Coach got them in yesterday to watch a vid of previous games and pinpoint errors and good plays and it seem to have payed dividends today. MASSIVE game next week, with 5 of the boys playing against their old club.

Ashburton U16 def Croydon City 5-1
Was pleasing for me to see them adapt to a new system due to player absence so quickly.
Played a nice flexible 3-5-2 system, with wingers and centre mids rolling back into defence regularly.
Would have been 5-0 but for a dodgy penalty decision (ball hit one of our players in the hand when he was facing the other way and his hand was by his side)
Could have been many more scored, but a couple of really good saves by their keeper and a couple of shots that clipped the bar or just missed.
Very happy with the boys.

Nup, he played AFL, his team got promoted to the next division up cos they kept flogging their opponents by close to 100 points. This week they got challenged but still won 48-21. DD Jr's loving both his sports, he's getting right stuck in to both, BUT I still wonder about the way he runs, he looks flat footed and awkward to me, and like he doesn't quite know where his top gear is.

Eldest: didn't play due to injury sustained last week. 1-1 draw.
Middlin: Thrashed opposition 5-0. Son kept the backline tight but was never really challenged.
Youngest: Drew 1-1. Held out valiantly against opposition's final 10 min onslaught. Came close to losing the game though as the referee (senior player/coach at club and parent of boy in opposition) played 4 mins 31 seconds of extra time while they peppered our goals.
NB, They play 25 mins halves and had absolutely no stoppage time. Nice try Andrew!:nono:

Little girl had a bye.
Boy's team won 1-0. Didn't see it. He reported a few ok saves, but not a huge amount of pressure. They lost to this team in a friendly a few weeks ago, so it is good to see a bit of improvement.
Big girl's team took a 6-0 thrashing. They didn't actually play as bad as all that, play for play, and they got a few shots off. The other side had one of those kids who just outclasses everyone, and she scored all 6. Feel sorry for them having to cop two big losses in a row when they are still trying to find their feet as a team.
We had an unofficial ref, and he awarded a penalty to his own side for a handball, which was a bit harsh imo. The ball hit her shoulder.

U12 West B, Brimbank lost to Keilor Park 0-1. Outplayed for most of the game but funnily enough, had more scoring opportunities, but managed to hit it straight to the keeper each time. A couple of sad lads after the game having lost to their former club. No doubt, plenty of shooting practice this week.

never lost by so much, it really hurt and the girls tried so hard but when you do not have your defence or your goalie what can you do against a fantastic team.

Under 9's Meadow Park beat Preston Lions, 4-0
DD Jr put in a sterling 1st half performance against the Preston Lions, played in the midfield, did well getting onto the end of the ball and dribbling through a mess of kids (TEN PLAYERS took to the small sized pitch, was ridiculous!). He took a long range kick from the wing at one point and hit the side post, ball bounced across the front of the goals and somehow stayed out, UNREAL shot! Some massive throw ins, and did well to find himself in space, ducking away from his opposition, although his teammates also didn't know he was there, he didn't want to yell out to them in case he gave away his free position to his opponents, cute!!!
Preston Lions didn't seem to know that they had positions, maybe due to the fact that their coach was subbing them every two seconds. At one point we were taking a corner kick and THEIR WHOLE TEAM was defending the corner at the FRONT POST, no one behind, no strikers left up the field. Our kids held their positions really really well, big booting kicks out of defence, some good ball control and some great goals. Good to see them passing to each other and keeping possession at such a young age, great little team they are and they're having heaps of fun!
DD Jr played goalkeeper second half, didn't touch the ball once, was actually sitting on the ground in the middle of the goals for a while.
Special mention goes to the most feral junior coach ever, abusing and swearing at his U9's, telling them not to dribble, should be ashamed of himself, was an absolutely disgraceful display.
Sorry about the long match report, I was rather excited to get down to the game today, was great to watch the kids do their thing.

It's funny how that happens, same with everyone I reckon, there's room for error at training, so no stress. Our boys do it too, is funny to watch how DD Jr trains, how he plays in social games then the difference when he is in a "real" match. I reckon it's similiar to balancing on a chalk line drawn on the ground VS walking a 1 foot wide beam 10 feet in the air, fear of failure and knowledge of the consequence.

Coached the Ashy U16's to 2nd win for the season coming from 1-0 down to win it 2-1.
Boys play better than any of the teams we've come up against so far. If it wasn't for the handball in the box/red-card/penalty last week we would now be sitting on top of the ladder. Looking forward to the rest of the season, as long as they keep working hard and playing like they did on the weekend.
So much width in our play, our wingers must be covering many k's per game. nice to see boys making space and using it well. the other teams tend to clog up their midfield and barrel through.

Happens to a lot of Junior Teams, one suggestion ask the parents to watch from a distance if possible, making it for the kids as if their parents aren't there, sometimes works. Or ask the parents to be at training just like at a match.

Our wingers are really quick and are willing to track back and help cover the right back and left back positions. The opposition struggle to get down the wings and so resort to coming back in through the centre.
Most joy for the opposition comes from taking advantage or either a) our teams inability to switch on for the first 10 minutes. 3 games out of 4 and we've copped a goal in the first 10. Or b) a long ball that catches our centre backs flatfooted. Neither of our goalies is great at reading that and coming off their line quickly.
If we can shut down those two options then we should be damn solid at the back.
