Only to got to see one game last Sunday.
Little girl lost 4-0. Haven't heard much about the game, other than the first choice goalie came off injured very early.
Boy won again. 1-0. That is 3/3 - very different from last year. He saved one that would have equalised, with some controversy.
Big girl got another trouncing 5 - 0. We've picked up another player TG (a 12 yo mind) but still had to last 80 minutes with 11 players. They are just not fit enough for that. Managed to get through to half time at 1-0, and even had a couple of moments when they might have been able to score. But they copped four in the second half. They keep trying, but they are too tired to be effective.
Looks like the league has stepped up around us this year, and we are likely to stay on the bottom. Pity. On the plus side, the girls are learning and improving, and staying positive. But at this stage we are hoping just to get our first goal of the season. Wins seem out of the question.

NO WAY!!!! I don't believe you, pffffttt U16's tracking back, as if!!!
It's true.
If not they get to do push-ups. It's a very militaristic regime i implement...but they love it. All 15 year olds crave discipline!
I had our right winger do 20 push-ups straight after the game for putting two shots over the bar. I told him low and hard across the goalie and he didn't. the rest of the team counted them off, we all had a laugh and then he stuck around after the game trying to improve his shooting.
(It's actually all in good fun and they take it the way its intended...no ritual humiliation or severe punishment. They're getting a really good team spirit and are all keen on doing the job for the team. Including tracking back)

Like CLM I was only able to see 1 of our 3 games this weekend. But unusually all 3 had wins so there were smiles all round by tea time.
Youngest won their first game of the season after drawing in Rounds 1, 2, and 3. I would have liked to have heard the team song. Was apparently sung with much gusto.
Middlin had another 5-0 win where they totally outplayed the opposition. They are already top of the league even though they had round 1 postponed and 8 teams have played more games than them. I'm starting to have concerns that our squad won't be challenged competitively this season. A bit of a concern for my son who plays central defence and only had about 8 touches all game. At least he had some intense training on Saturday.
Eldest was returning from a 2 week injury this week. Started the second half and did his job efficiently enough. He is off playing school soccer today. Hope he has fun!

I've got two playing for Brunswick City, U11 boys and U14 girls.
Daydream, is your kid in a team?
(Kvelling is a Yiddish word. It means the feeling or look of pride you see on parents watching their children. This thread was originally set up for the parents to boast about their offspring playing in inept junior teams - or at least to regale us with their stories. But the older kids are welcome to boast on their own behalf if they feel so moved.)

Managed to see all 3 games this week.
Little girl drew 2-2, which was a fair result. Though they led 2-1 well into the second half, so it is a pity they could not defend the lead.
Boy got yet another win - 4/4 for the season. But he lost his clean sheet to a close free kick that sailed over his head.
Big girl got another pasting - 4-0 - from the top of the table team. But they fought very hard, and it was an entertaining contest. Our keeper played so well she got applause from the other side. Opposition coach lost it a bit when the (unofficial) ref awarded a penalty against them - even though they were 3-0 up ffs. But we can't even score a penalty this season. Lots of commitment from the girls today, and they continue to improve. But I still can't work out where we are ever going to get a goal from.

Coached the lads to a 1-0 win.
Goal coming in the last 4 minutes.
Their goalie was 6', had a deep booming voice and was built like an AFL player. In U16s.
Intimidated the shit out of our forwards. He crashed into them everytime they came in the box. Was kinda scary to see someone that big smashing our players around. In a nice tale of karma though, he miskicked a goalkick straight to one of our strikers and he slotted home the winner.
Back up to 4th on the ladder and in striking distance of 2nd.

West U12B Brimbank put in a much better performance than last week and won 3-1 after going a goal down early. MASSIVE test this week, playing the top side who have around +35 goal difference after 6 rounds.

Youngest played the top placed unbeaten team. Our boys came out ferociously and were all over the visitors in the first 10 minutes. Hit the crossbar. Hit the post. Had 2 great shots sizzle closely over the top. Visitors were shell shocked and panicky but gradually regained their composure and got back into the game. Then the visitors scored 2 goals before the break. (One through the legs of our usually reliable keeper.:blushing:). From all accounts the 2nd half was reasonably even but our boys lost their confidence and conceded 2 more just before full time. So were done 4-0.
Middlin's team played football at 12.30 pm. Opposition played thuggery. Football won 8-0.
My 16 yo played U21's on Saturday. Dominated the game. Had a 2-0 lead with 3 or 4 good opportunities missed as well. So was a bit of a shock when the defence went to sleep twice and the game ended in a 2 all draw. Coach gave a 20 minute post match bollocking. Luckily son was playing midfield this week as the defenders and strikers copped most of it.

He is definitely U16, i'm not trying to sugegst anything less. But When a kid that big starts smashing into your forwards any time they are in the box, then its understandable when they get intimidated and pull out of pressuring the goalie.

West U12B Brimbank were defeated by top of the table Cairnlea 5-0. Boy's matched them for the opening 15mins and had 2 good chances to take the lead but failed and soon after copped 2 in 2 mins and they fell away. At least they stuck at it and only conceded once in the second half.

The little girls won 4-3 - apparently one of them scored a huge goal from a massive distance (at least in little girl terms).
Boy had to settle for a 1-1 draw this time, after they gave away a penalty early in the game - apparently he ALMOST stopped it.
As usual, I got to watch the losing game, lol. Big girls went down 3-0 today in an entertaining but frustrating game where they had chances to score and could not take them. They are improving, but playing against stronger opponents all the time, they have so few opportunities to take a shot that they don't know what it feels like.
We finally got an official ref. He was rather complimentary about my daughter's skills. :batman:

My U12 lost for the second week in a row. (2-1). But I was proud of my little man who worked from the back with another player with some quality passing to set up our only goal. :thumbup1: He gave the final through ball for our goalscorer also.
Middlin had an exciting 1-1 draw and it was great to see him involved in the game much more than usual. (LOL, Unfortunately that means that his team was under pressure, as he plays at the back). Did some great tackling, heading and clearances. I am very impressed with his developing maturity this season. Shows excellent distribution and composure under pressure.
Eldest also had a score draw. Had a good game in midfield but found that his fitness couldn't sustain him for a full game (returning from injury) and came off halfway through the second. But he's happy to be back in the starting 11.

coached the boys to an 8-1 win this week.
their goal came from a penalty that never was. but can't complain too much. one of our goals was a close offside call. probably should have been disallowed.
good for goal difference. but other results didn't go our way. In 4th, 5 points off the top and 1 point off 2nd.

Yay for the search function!
Big week. Start with the biggest news.
Gooooaaaaaallllllllllllllll
The big girl's team finally found out what that net at the end of the pitch is for. For weeks now we have been watching them play better and better, with nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. But they finally found the net.
Still conceded 4, but you can't have everything.
She was also asked to stay on and go bench for the OW straight after, and ended up playing 80 minutes. Nice for her.
The little girl had a win - 4-0 - but she personally played like crap, flat footed, lost and lacking energy.
Boy won again. They are top of the table. There are worrying signs of delusions of grandeur - compulsory training kit, matching jackets. The sort of sartorial hubris that seems to overwhelm coaches who get a whiff of superleague through the liniment.
Apparently he took a very, very good save, but my eyes were on the other game at the time (they overlapped). He also made a bad bad error, but managed to scramble back and somehow clear it out. I saw that one. :)

Buh, after last weeks dominance, this week 9 out of 11 players decided to have an off-game away.
Went up 3-1 and then preceded to completely suck at stopping basic route 1 football. The other team could not get past out defence on the ground, but when they took to the long bomb our defence freaked out and conceded 6 goals!!!!!
3-7 loss in the end.
Spent all training working on getting the defence to anticipate long balls and through balls better. High hopes for this week as they seemed to click by the end of the session.

I didn't see my youngest or eldest son's games this week as I was away for the long weekend with my 14 yo's training camp.
However both of them had good 2-0 wins.

Western U12B, Brimbank defeat Sth Yarra 4-0 in a convincing effort. Could have been around 6 or 7. Think that will put them in about 5th position, so hopefully can start to string a few wins together. Boy has trials for futsal squad(west region) today to be then selected for Vic squad. In DD Jr's last ever football match (:crying:) he pulled out some absolute pearlers, netting both the teams only goals in the first half, one from a free kick and the other (that I didn't see) apparently chested down to his feet, controlled then hit it in. He also did the coolest little back heel i the first half, that left all the parents on the sidelines with their jaws on the ground. Second half he played in goals, he saved two certain goals, but missed one cracker. First draw of the season, 2-2. the other team had some fantastic skillful strikers that shocked our team, who haven't really been challenged this season. The back line got a bit freaked out and flustered with the continual waves of attack. But there was some great runs up the line by our attackers and som pretty damn fine defending. One kid was hacking a bit, very clumsy tackles from behind. OH and LOL @ DD jr getting pulled up for a gorgeous slide tackle (I don't think they like the kids to slide tackle in Under 9's).

little girl's team came away with a 1-0 win in a rather dull affair where both teams looked sleepy
our team was definitely sleepy, after one of the girls had half the team up til 4.00am on Friday night for her birthday sleepover
***
boy had a bye, so they bunged on a friendly against a younger team
they played the first half without their sweeper, and promptly conceded 3, and were 3-1 at half time
they got a bit of a shock
they managed to bring it back and win 5-3 in the end
***
the big girl played late in the day against a team with a rather fearsome reputation
they were physical, but not dirty
the ref was more of a problem than the team or parents, being officious and rude
my coach and several of the parents were incensed
we conceded a goal after about 20 minutes, which is good going for us
and then we actually equalised about 10 minutes before half time
it would a good feeling to reach half time with the scores level
and my girl scored the goal :proudandrelievedfase:
we kept it level well into the second half
then the goalkeeper failed to clear a goal kick out of the box, and the ref allowed the consequent goal to stand, though it probably should have been disallowed
we could not get a second goal in
and the game ended at 2-1

My brothers team played against Light United on the weekend and the game finished off with a brawl between the parents. He plays in the under 14 A competition. There was no official referee and the Light united ref and linesmen were bending the rules in their favour. The team manager of my brothers team went to the linesmen and asked if you could please be fair for the last five or so minutes. The linesmen retaliated with some words and thats how it basically started.
One of the dads in my brothers team was bashed with the linesmen flag. If my old man hadn't intervened who knows how much more damage would of happened. It's quite sad what happened and there is going to be and investigation held by the FFV. I thought it was a must that there has to be an official referee organised by the home side. The under 15 game this week between the two clubs has been canceled just in case parents from the under 14's turn up looking for a fight.

It's sad to see this happen but unfortunately there is a shortage of Referee's (I wonder why!?)
My son had a bye this weekend so we went to see the U12A team at his club and the Ref was a no show. One of the dad's from my son's team (who has done his Ref's course) was asked to Ref. He actually had the Balls to call a handball to "our" team which they had just scored from to bring the scores back to 0-0. They ended up winning 3-1 anyway.
Unfortunately alot of parents lose sight of the duty they have to the game. I've lost count of the number of parents who think that their kid is the next Kewell, Cahill etc. They aren't!!
I hope the kids on both sides are not put off by this!!

No
FFV organise the referees - full stop
The rules also state that if the Ref fails to appear the Home Side is to provide someone to Ref - it does NOT have to be a qualified Ref - basically just a parent

We often don't get an official ref. So it is up to us to find someone. I got a terrible shock when I found out the first time - 2 minutes before a game was due to start - that I was expected to provide a ref.
We usually go a tell the oppo coach and team manager there is no ref, offer one of our own, and invite them to provide one if they prefer.
Ironically, the time we have had the most trouble was when we were away, and they said they could not provide a ref, and we provided one of our dads to do it. Then their coach got all stroppy during the game.
But the problem is not the refs.
It is belligerant parents who take it too seriously.

I'm supposed to be rostered on to do ref duties for our team, but unfortunately the team manager and the coach make sure they ask every single father at games if they can ref before they ask me, despite me jumping up and down and singing out "I'll do it, I'll do it".

Bit late, but anyway, here's last weekend:
The U12's had a 1-1 draw with team 2 places below them. Our boys hit the woodwork (yes I know it's not wood anymore) 4 times in the first half. :cursing::ohmy:
Nil all half time.
Then 5 mins into 2nd half the opposition scored a gem of a goal from just outside the penalty area. Disgruntled husband (Coach) reckons it was a cross. Doesn't matter - it went in! Then 3 minutes from end my little fella sends a delightful ball through for our speedy centre forward who chipped the advancing keeper.
Middlin had a 4-1 win and an excellent game. (Shh... I saw his name written down for 3 votes).
Eldest had a win also, 2-1. Has cemented a starting spot now. Though we are puzzled why the Coach is still subbing him 15 minutes from the end. (Is back to full fitness.) Only trained once this week due to his school exams so will be interesting to see if the Coach punishes this tomorrow.

For my brother situation and other children in the team it sucks as they would of gone equal top with a game in hand. While it was wrong what the other team they should of just got over it and made a complaint. They were winning 3-2 with 5 minutes to go after coming back from 2-0. Should of just accepted what happened and moved on.

U12 West B, Brimbank defeat St. Albans 4-0 in a tough encounter. All pressure on Saints although 0-0 at h-t. Kids did fantastic to not drop their heads after having 3 clear cut chances in the first half, and came out firing in the persistent rain in the second half. An early goal and then a decision I couldn't understand. Brimbank has a penaly shot saved by the keeper, only then for the shot taker to follow up and slot in the rebound, which is called offside????? I always thought once the keeper had saved it, it was first in.
Anyway, they went on to score another 3 so it didn't matter in the end.
Another thing I will say is St. Albans seriously need to select better linesmen, because the guy who has reffed us when the kids were younger, and now runs the line, seriously doesn't know the first thing about football, and always needlessly inflames potentially very ugly circumstances. For around 2/3 mins he was standing alond the bye line instead of the touch line for whatever reason. We have had issues nearly every time we have been there in 4 years. SERIOUSLY GET SOME PEOPLE IN THE KNOW TO CONTRIBUTE.
Must say their coach was very humble in defeat & shook hands encouragingly with all oppsition players, so ole to him.

LOL @ linesmen (and lineswomen) Slab, we have our fair share of crap ones too , including today (for our senior womens that is, U9's aren't real strict offside i don't think...). It sucks when you don't get good honest genuine people to do the right thing for the junior leagues though, it doesn't really set a good example of good sportsmenship.
DD jr decided to play today, and due to a misunderstanding, our game was delayed till 11.15 kick off instead of 10am kick off, which means DD Jr was able to play the full game, rather than just the second half (he played Aussie rules first at 8.30-10). We played Brunswick Zebra's, who were very skillful but also terrible hacks, we had 4 kids go off after being badly chopped, including DD Jr, and one of their players wrestled one of our players and threw him to the ground, before storming off the pitch and have a cry. Many ice packs were needed. TRAGICALLY we conceeded an early goal, followed quickly by an own goal (i think?), beautiful goal by ours, to take it to 2-1, and ANOTHER own goal by THE SAME KID (he was shattered, crying on the pitch, poor darling, I growled at him after the game, told him he had a lot of heart to battle on as he did), and finished up losing 3-2. First loss of the season. I didn't see the second goal was busy attending DD Jr's leg. One of the kids was SOO pissed off after the game, was clear to him that the other team were rough, was a shock to the boys, they haven't really encountered that physical play yet (sooo innocent!!!). We clapped and cheered our tema though they're good kids and they didn't play dirty, they dug in and played well, just couldn't beat them, quality team the zebras are.
Bit of controversy OFF the pitch, when i got word that one of OUR OWN PARENTS was slagging off MY SON saying he was faking his injury. I was fuming and wanted to punch her in the face, but......not a good example to set for the kids. BUT in good news, I was standing with one opposition parent, while DD jr was in goals for the second half, and he said DD jr was a brilliant player and if he keeps up, he'd be socceroos material. HOW CHUFFED WERE WE!!!!
I was so proud of my boy today, well i am every day, EXCEPT WHEN HE DOESN'T PRACTICE HIS CELLO!!!!

I'll intertwine the reports on my 3 boys this week as they overlap curiously on the subject matter of team selection and game time.
My eldest had a comfortable 3-1 win and at last as well as starting the game he finished it to the final whistle. Coach even told him he had an 'excellent game'. My youngest had a desperate do or die battle (as all 12A games seem to be I'm afraid), and drew 2-2. A fair enough result for both teams I felt. My husband is Coach and rotated most of the players off the bench to ensure everyone got a run. He has 3 lads who are not quite up to it but they give their all and try their best to do everything they have been instructed to. I had the pleasure of standing amongst our parent group, MOST of whom are great people. But we have about 4 Dads who were going bananas over the interchanges - feeling that playing the weaker boys was costing us the game. These Dads also yell instructions to the players about where to stand, what to do, who to give it to etc. My husband is not enjoying coaching this year sadly. Seems they all know better. (Not a coaching licence between them btw).
My middlin had a last minute 1-0 win over troublesome opposition who were not very good but expertly experienced at hassling and frustrating more talented teams and keeping them out. Coach had 4 on the bench (again, the weaker lads) and didn't play any of them. Not even for 5 minutes. Obviously there was a bit of swearing and grunting from some parents at the end. I am the Manager. I expect I will hear more about it tonight at training.
Compare and contrast if you will!
So despite 3 satisfactory results for the weekend I do not have happy reflections of it. Mind you my sons are oblivious to the politics thank God. So at least their fun wasn't spoiled.
PS, The 14 yo did a 14.2 in his beep test on Saturday.

......... U9's aren't real strict offside i don't think........
No offside in U9s
http://www.footballfedvic.com.au/development/ssg/2008%20Rooball%20Rules.pdf
19. Off-Side
19.1. There is no offside rule in Rooball. However, it is against the spirit of
the game for a player be deliberately encouraged or positioned to be in an
offside position.
19.2. Referees should ensure that rather than penalise the players for being
in an offside position, that the players are taught the spirit of the offside rule;
as it will not be the fault of a Rooball player that they are not aware of correct
position to place themselves during play.
19.3. Coaches of 10s age group players should treat this as an important
feature of the game to be taught to players, along with throw-ins and
passing, especially as when players reach the bigger league pitches, the ball
will invariably be awarded to the opposition as a free-kick.

Sadly the number of Under 9's coaches (and a few U10's) that position a Matthew Llloyd and Fevola as their 2 strikers and think they are teaching the kids something
If Im reffing these games - I stop the play and tell the coach to advise his players not to be 20 yards away offisde - then you get the cries of "theres no offside in Rooball" - they do shut up when you tell them that there is in football and thats what we are trying to teach them!! :tank:

DD, the U9s played against Brunswick City, not Zebras.
When DD Jnr got chopped he was actually on a great run down the left and the player that hacked him down would've been the third player he went around.

I was just about to tell DD that the Zebras U9s have 3 different teams that rotate through the comp.
But City is another story. They have been winning by massive margins all year.

Little girl was reported to have played well this week, after sluggish performances for a couple of weeks. Team went down a goal in the first half, and fought back in the second to a 2-1 win. This was their fourth win in a row.
The bigger excitement came later when the FFV results page got it wrong, awarding the winning result to the other team for 48 hours. But order has now been restored, and they are second on the ladder.
They have scored the highest number of goals of any team. I am very pleased with that, because I think the hardest part of coaching girls is getting them to shoot.
Boy got a 3-3 draw and dropped from first to third.
Equal points - equal goal difference - they have scored one less and conceded one less than the second position, but they have a game in hand. Their coach is devasted. Silly prick. They lost all last season, and now he is worried about all wins apart from two draws.
Big girl scored again for her team, which has now scored in their last 3 games. Things are looking up. Final result was 4-1, as they leaked a lot in the second half - although they actually had more of the ball and more of the attack. We play the other bottom dweller next week.
She also played for the OW straight after. She looks like an energiser bunny out there with the women, even though she has just played a full game. They move around the pitch so much less than the girls. She got a lot of game time again. Starts on bench, gets subbed on, then stays on for the rest of the half. I suggested maybe the coach likes what she is doing. But she said she reckons it is cos he can't remember her name - once he puts her on, he can't get her off again. LOL.

I was asking about the Brunswick Zebras womens, cos we played them pre-season and beat them, and they're in Divi 2 and we're in Divi 3. I know they've been going shit in Divi 2, and look like getting dropped back down to Divi 3 this year, while we're in line to get promoted up to Divi 2 next season.

No, we played Zebras in preseason, black and white vertical stripes strips. We played the team with the old girl in goals, rather large woman. I've played them heaps, at least 8 times over the years. I remember one player, Jo, we always say g'day to each other. They've got a very "mature" groups of players, makes me feel good to see other older women playing, but then again, I suppose that's cos we're in the lower divis. If your playing in NW Divi 3, our team will play your at some point.

Who is this 'your'? I'm not particularly attached to them yet. LOL
My daughter's team is U16.
The OW is a new team, and is starting from the bottom. The lofty heights of Div 3 are far off.
They also have some older women - one is 40.
Thought you played City too in pre-season? One Wednesday night. Perhaps not. Zebras have that team, and also a team that came up from U16 and could have been U18, but ended up being registered OW. The second team is in the bottom league too.

Fierce winds were one of the players today.
Little girl came away with a 1-0 win. Local facilities did not run to two benches, so they stuck the interchange players in the back of our car, like at a drive-in.
Boy conceded 2 wind assisted goals, for their first loss of the season. Coach was proud of their performances, so I am told.
Big girl's team did not play well today. Pity, cos if they showed the form of previous weeks, they may have been in with a shot. A few things went wrong early. Our sweeper was ruled out with an injury minutes before kick-off. Another player was a no-show, so no bench. We lost the toss, and started kicking into the wind.
But I think the real problem was a holiday mood already creeping over them, and making them a bit flat. Result was yet another 3-0 loss.
She then went on to play with the OW again, and came away with a 3-0 win.

Springvale White Eagles 2-3 Doncaster Rovers - U/16 S/E Super League
This game was huge for us, we were 5th 3 points behind Springvale who were 4th.
Wind was unbelievable (for an example, when goal kicks were taken into the wind the ball barely made half way when it was with the wind it was taken to the opposing 18 yard box).
We (Doncaster Rovers) were against the wind first half but 9 minutes into the first half we broke through and nice ball was put through to another midfielder and we were up 1-0. 5 minutes later they had a free at their defensive 18 yard box, they took it and the wind pushed it over everyone, we had a defender running backwards to get it out and our keeper coming forward, a late call from the keeper saw our defender get confused and header it into our own net.
10 minutes later we had a corner, we practice it a lot and knew what to do, movement was made, ball was played to the front post on the 6 yard box and the header went back post and in. up 2-1
They had a break just before half time and converted a one on one oppurtunity.
We went in 2-2 at Half Time dissapointed with the way we were defending, two goals which were created by our mistakes gave a 2-2 scoreline.
Second half we had the wind and Springvale were not able to get it out of their defensive half, eventually it payed off when i was played through with a ball around their defense and left with a bouncing ball and a keeper coming out which went over his head and in the net.
Springvale started to get frustrated but our determination held them off and got us well deserved 3 points which leaves us equal 5th with them and 2 games in hand which if we win will put us 2nd and 1 point behind Endeavour Hills on top.

DD jr played one half only of game he should have played two halves for but the fuckers at the club got the kick off time wrong and didn't let us know (Although I thought it was up to the Team manager to confirm that during the week....)
We played essendon royals, about the only other team I've seem that makes use of the park and holds their positions and intentionally passes. Bloody fine to see. DD jr ran himself ragged in the midfield, saw him pull up a few times to catch his breath, plus we had quite a few out on holidays and with illness, so depleted squad to begin with, coupled with a fierce wind (as everyone had) and a massive pitch. Highlight of that half was DD Jr scoring from a corner kick, took a deflection off the keeper and went in. BUT alas, that was one of the two goals scored in a 13-2 pounding. I wanted to ask others, with reference to junior football:
Do you play reduced numbers at lower age groups?
Do you play on a smaller sized pitch?
Are you finding consitency at away games?
Do you coaches/club admin seem to be aware of the intention of rooball and the reduced numbers, reduced pitch size philosophy? and if yes, do they care and abide by it?

I do, as you know, and I encourage it, but others (even within our club) seem to be against it for some reason IMO because they think it's not like "real" football.
Do you play on a smaller sized pitch?
Again, as you know, I do and our club follows this rule but other clubs tend not to. Some do, some don't. The worst I've seen is Under 7s playing 11 v 11 on a full sized pitch last year. Can't remember which club it was though...
Are you finding consitency at away games?
As above, sometimes yes, sometimes no. This is where the FFV MUST step in and make rules for: Maximum Pitch size, Maximum number of players on field etc.

I don't know much about coaching, but I suspect from my little experience that this is the first and hugest hurdle of getting a team performing.
They all take time to get the confidence to shoot, and to understand that it is game of percentages. Even the Olyroos lost it a bit there when they were thrown into the grown-ups game last week.

One of the drills that they use at my son's Football Club is good and encourages all players to shoot. They call it Brazilians. I'll try and explain it to you. It also uses the goalkeeper (as a keeper!) which often doesn't happen at alot of clubs - they simply have to join in with the outfield drills.
Basically you set up a grid. The size will depend on the number of players available at that training session. In the middle of the grid set up some posts using slalom poles if you have them. Ths is the goal that the designated goal keeper will be protecting as it were. You divide the rest of the players into equal groups of say 6 a side & give them bibs coloured say Red & Blue.
All the reds go to one side & all the blues to the other. There is one ball which the coach holds on the side line. Before play the coach nominates the number of passes to be made before a shot can be taken, say 3,4 or 5. The choice is the coaches.
The coach then throws the ball to say the red team & they start to pass the ball to each other, 3 blue players then move over to the "red" side of the grid to contest the ball, jockey, tackle etc. The Red team have to obviously pass, move, shield the ball etc until they have completed required number of passes passes (3,4 or 5, whatever) and then they can shoot. They don't have to but it should be encouraged. The goalie tries to save the shot which may be close in or a shot from the back of the grid. If he saves the ball, he turns around, throws it to the other side of the grid where the 3 blue players who did not go to the other (red) side are located & they start to pass the ball etc. The other 3 blue players move across to join them as do 3 red "defenders"
Once again once they have reached the desired number of passes, they can take a shot and on it goes. Throw ins can be taken as normal.
It is a great drill as it encourages all aspects of the game including, passing, movement, trapping, shielding, shooting, jockeying, tackling, switching play, spreading out, even communication as to who goes over to to try and get the ball off the 6 opposing players.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. If one of the 3 defenders gets the ball, they play it back to their other 3 team mates (on the passing side/area) - it doesn't have to go between the posts so to speak, they rush back to join their 3 colleagues and try and accrue their 4,5,6 whatever passes.
If a goal is scored, once again the 3 defenders go across to join their 3 team mates to try and build up their passes and score.
Other plus points for this exercise are that it uses the keeper as a keeper in the drill and you can tailor it to number so if you only had 11 you could have one goalie with the outfield players split 5 v 5 & send over say 2 defenders to try and get the ball.
Sorry this is long winded & I hope I've explained it.
It is a great drill.

LS11 - How the hell can you condone Under 9s playing 9 v 9 on a half size pitch? The idea is for these kids to get more touches not less! 8,9 & 10v10 on a half pitch is like watching the running of the bulls in long socks and shin pads. It resembles a battlefield more than it resembles an environment to learn to play football in.
Coaches that are worried about all their kids not getting a run should pick smaller squads or should split squads in two and play at different times.

Where do I condone Rooball? I just answered the questions as they were asked. Having coached Under 8's last year and Under 9's and SSG's this year allow me to comment as a coach and not as a player from that age group
SSG's are very good and do allow more time on the ball per person
Under 9's Under 10's do allow a competitive edge to games instead of the same faces week in week out which is the weakness of SSG's
Also the authorities need to decide if we are to teach the kids "skills" or "football" or which combination of both?
SSG teaches skills but doesnt teach them football as such - Rooball to a lesser extent teaches skills, but has more focus on football as a game / competition which in its own right, is just as valuable to tach as skills per se

You can learn to play football with less players on the field and still have them playing against other clubs. Why does the FFV feel that they need to allow 9v9 when clubs play against each other? Why can't it just stay at 7v7 maximum. That way, they still get the competition but it doesn't become a messy battlefield and kids get more touches of the ball.

Youngest had his game postponed. Ski holiday scheduled for catch up round now totally screwed!!
Middlin's team missing 2 important players this game - 1 to a Queensland holiday and 1 to a broken nose. Match played on one of the crappiest bumpiest pitches we have seen all year. Was short in length too - just within limits I reckon. Suited the wind-assisted long ball that got lobbed at us incessantly. Finished with a 2-2 draw after leading comfortably by 2 goals with 15 mins to go. We got a last minute penalty but then the ref changed his mind and took it off the spot and put it on edge of box for a free kick. ??????
Eldest got beaten 3 nil by clearly the best team in the comp. Was closer than the score suggests and very competitive. My son was one of a small number who DIDN'T get a yellow or red card.

The worst I've seen is Under 7s playing 11 v 11 on a full sized pitch last year. Can't remember which club it was though...
It must have been interstate or country league.
FFV haven't had Under 7 Rooball since 2001.

FFV have the Rooball rules clearly oulined - showing pitch sizes and number of players - although I think Rooball will cease either next year or the year after as SSG's will move up to U10's. Whether that is a good idea or not is another discussion
In effect what will happen is this;
2009 Under 9's go to SSG
2010 Under 10's go to SSG
2011 Under 11's go to SSG
2012 Under 12's go to SSG
The U/11 & U/12 will effectively be Rooball though labelled SSG.
One problem I see is the lack of coaches and the current coaches getting their heads around what SSG is all about.
