Oh dear
Also the authorities need to decide if we are to teach the kids "skills" or "football" or which combination of both?
SSG teaches skills but doesnt teach them football as such - Rooball to a lesser extent teaches skills, but has more focus on football as a game / competition which in its own right, is just as valuable to tach as skills per se

Very accurate, the different attitudes Clubs have of SSG is frightening and the FFA & FFV need to get more Info out, and I would like to see Coaching Courses come "to the people". Coaching courses should be conducted at Clubs or Council districts or FFV Zones to give greater emphasis to SSG. I would also like to see Clubs start to employ Directors of Coaching to further re-inforce better Coaching practice.

You are 100% spot on there

Just to do a most basic Junior course, you need to do either
- a full weekend at FFV
- 4 nights (in a row) at FFV

Pretty much counts most folk from Easter, South or Peninsula out as the travel is ludicrous

Im also noticing that coaches in general are becoming more and more hard to find. Even at Under 9's and 10's level I know of coaches getting PAID - and not just a couple of bucks each week for petrol money either

A coach I know well, was offered, wait for it, over 10K a season cash in hand just to oversee the coaches in another clubs set up - He wasnt even going to be a coach, just a supervisor!!!!

Last Fri my beloved Under 9's were asked to join a Gala / Introductory Futsul day with a Futsul club in our area, se we sent down 1 Under 9's team and 1 Under 10's team to play a round robin tournament against each other and 4 Futsul teams also

None of my boys had played Futsul before, yet thet went underfeated and won the entire tournament!!!!

Question:

I have my 2 first choice CBs out. My stand-in CB is also out this week. I have a couple of good left and right backs who probably don't have the strength and skills to play CB.

I was considering playing a back 3 of my one recognised CB with my top LB and RB alongside. 2 wingbacks (who definitely have the speed and stamina to switch from def into attack) and 2 screening mids (especially in the first 15 mins til the new defence settles).

Of course this really only leaves me one AM (good skills) and 2 forwards (awesome pace and decent skill).

It seems like a really defensive line-up but i'm not sure what else I can do to a) support our weakened defensive line and b) stsop us conceding in the first 10 mins (which we do regularly).

Is 2 DMs a little too defensive?

Your question becomes can my players adapt to a 1-3-4-1-2 or 1-3-5-2 formation?

If you have been playing a 1-4-4-2 or 1-4-3-1-2 (I'm guessing here) type formation my suggestion is pull back a midfielder into a sweeper/libero type role, this would keep your team playing their usual formation and not creating anxiety in the team that comes with playing a new formation. Early stage of match restrict him to purely defensive posture then provide him with a licence to push into midfield with and without the ball while making sure one of your full backs (of course the loose one) provides cover in defence. This move (pushing libero/sweeper further upfield) should only be made as you see how the game unfolds.

Just my opinion for what its worth.

Well we've usually play with just 1 DM and either a flat back 4 or a back 3 and 2 wing-backs.

Our team is strong in attack, but defensively its struggled.

I'm just worried that if we go defensive we're no longer playing to our strength in attack style, but that if we try to keep that attacking style with an even weaker defence (due to personnel issues) then we're going to get smashed at the back.

A 4-4-2 with 2 DMs is just over the top. A 3-4-1-2 gives me 2 DM's to screen the fragile defence somewhat, but puts lots of pressure on the wingbacks to push forward and drop back quickly. Or I can play the 4-4-2 and just have the lone DM and hope that the 2 new CBs can do their job.

West U12b, Brimbank defeat Sydenham Park 3-1. 1 goal up at the break with the wind, then defensive error & goal levelled it up before they re-grouped and scored another 2. Some impressive angle 1-2's interplay between the kids today.
Huge game next week, as we travel back to the old stomping grounds of Keilor Park for the first time. Must win match......Hmmmmmm

Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Eastern Lions U/16 S/E Super League

Dissapointing result for us, expected a lot more from the game, their keeper was the only thing keeping it at 1-0 to be honest, it could have hit 6 or 7 nil quiet easily.

We are playing a catch up game against Bulleen on Tuesday at 7.00 @ Anderson Park.

Great weekend result.

Started with a 4-3-3, went 3 up in the first 10 minutes. Then shifted to a 3--4-3 and managed to win 8-0.

Unlike the previous week we peppered the goals and if it weren't for their goalie having a great day, we probably woulda been up at least 10 or 11 nil.

I like it when they learn something at training and then take that into the game.

We played "Team x" and won 2-1. We play the same club, different team, and they have a side that been together for 4 years now with the same coach, and are winning everything 10, 15-0. Good on 'em BUT

At U9's level how do you come up against a side thats been together for 4 years?

Does winning every week Lots-Nil actually teach the kids anything? Should they play in a higher or older level?

Im actually looking forward the testing ourselves against very good oppossition, but really is this good for THEIR players???

First chance for kvelling for a couple of weeks. Little Miss Arab won 1-0 despite only having 10 players (whatever happened to the middle week of school holidays being a free week?). Desperate defence for most of the game, with a breakwaway winner the difference.

Arabjunior won 2-1, with him playing a Viduka-esque centre forward role; holding the ball up and laying it off to the advancing midfielders. Provided a lovely assist for the winning goal.

Big kvelling here for 12 yo and his Dad. They knocked off 2nd placed team 2-1 and have moved into 4th.
Middlin had club game postponed due to having 3+ players with State commitments.
Eldest had a draw. Was benched for first half as 3 senior players were dropped to U21's to get some game time.

West U12b Brimbank defeat Keilor Park 3-1 at KP and take 4th spot on the ladder. Unbelievable day back at the old stomping ground for the first time.
Some dodgy refereeing decisions in the first half and went to the break 1-1. Very tense going into the wind 2nd half and there was a fair bit of animosity between some of the opposing parents. Went 2-1 up about 10 mins into 2nd half but were struggling to kill off the game due to POOR shot taking. The boy made an important save still at 2-1 before they scored the KILLER 1 minute before the end and I have never heard 7na chant GO OFF with scarves waving at an u12 game but it was awesome. Knights parents on the pitch next door pissed themselves. OLE

On Tuesday night we (Doncaster Rovers U/16) had a catch up game against Bulleen and won 2-0 which was huge for us and brought us to 3rd.
Today we played Endeavour Utd away and they were 2nd so if we won we would have gone into 2nd spot.
We drew 0-0 which was good considering we got a red in the 15th minute of the first half.

U9's Meadow Park are all at sea at the moment, they've lost their strucutre, they've lost their positioning, they've stopped passing and don;t seem to be able to dribble anymore.....at least they can clear the ball, but the odd one gets through. Or in this case, the odd 5. lost 5-1 to Light United (??) at home. The poor sweeper got stuck on his own too many times, with three attacking players barrelling down on him, while his defenders were trying to score goals (WTF???). The kid in goals did well, dived the right way, tried really hard, got down on the ground to stop a certain goal (I suspect it DID actually cross the line). I hope his olds weren't pissed off at me, but I went behind the goals to give him some encouragement and pass on a few hints about calling back his defenders to help, and grab the ball for him when it went out for a corner kick.
DD Jr did well too, (although as a midfielder, he didn't really get back quick enough to help) but I feel like he's playing on his own, as most of the kids seem to be doing also, they are all individually flocking the ball. SIGH!!!
They're good kids, but i don't think they're having much fun these days, and I don't think that them not playing like a team is all their fault, but perhaps reflective of a bit of disharmony and snipey-ness creeping into the wider group....

U16s showed their quality on Sunday to end the top teams unbeaten season.

2 early goals followed by lots of possession and solid defence meant that the opposition resorted to long balls. One managed to work and they slotted home 1 goal, but other than that we always looked the team more likely to score a further goal.

I love it when they hold their structure and shape. Noone can match us when we play as a unit. The only few games we've lost are where we concede in the first 10 minutes due to them forgetting that shape and structure is vital.

Not much kvelling from me this week.

Youngest's top 4 aspirations took a dive yesterday with a 2-1 loss away from home. Points they shouldn't have dropped but that's football eh?

Middlin had a good 4-2 win over the psychos of the league. Thank goodness we don't have to play them again this season. (BTW, this group had a big punch on last week that we are still waiting to hear the fallout from.)

Eldest had the assistant coach looking after things this week and sat on the bench for the full 90. Seems the A.C. doesn't think much of him.

2nd loss of the season - against a very good Oakleigh Cannons side thats been together for 3 years!!!! not bad for a Under 9's lot - half my players are Drambuies

We got played off the park to an extent, but 2 of their goals were dubious home side reffing I suspect

Still full credit to Oakleigh - any team at under 9's levels that can defensively head corners away is a step ahead at this age

Afterwards their asst coach was wrapped as he said it was the first time his team had been put under any pressure all season!!!

What we need to do is learn from our loss

West U12B Brimbank defeat Melbourne Knights 2-1 with the winner coming 1min from full time. Went to congratulate the Knights keeper after the game for some of the superb saves he'd made & the poor kid was crying having let in the late winner. Spoke to Knights coach afterwards & he told me he's not even the normal keeper, so he did fantasic considering he was thrown in the deep end. Played Moreland ??? at Oak Park this morning, civilised 10am kick off, nice change from all the 8.30 starts we've been having lately. After a bit of soul searching from the coach and the parents this week, we saw a united front from our team this week, with the object of the day to HAVE FUN AND PLAY TOGETHER with NO PRESSURE from the coach or parents. My kid sat off for much of the first half (which I was happy about) while the others had a really good dig at it. A kid who usually plays in the back three was given a run up the front as striker AND SCORED and a kid who has never played in goals before had a go there, and he was GREAT in directing his defenders AND them responding to him and calling out encouragement. One of the dedicated stirkers was seen tracking back to help out in defense a few times, was great to see.

SO, the best thing about today was that our players held their positions instead of flocking as individuals at the ball, and HEAPS of passing, that ultimately led to TWO GOALS, resulting in a win of 2-1. Then the whole team went off to McDonalds (much to my disgust) to celebrate as a team.

Its getting really hard to watch us play superior football week-in week-out and just not get the results.

Having 2 of our 3 forwards injured doesn't help, but we continue to play at about 60% possession even agains the top teams, we have some of the nicest passes and use of width, plus individually our players continue to run circles around the opposition, but they are just too goal shy.

It doesn't help that we're a very small team (height and weight) and are coming up against defences packed with kids who could push me off the ball, let along a little 15 year old.

I'm going to enforce the use of muscle mass supplements or something. Our strikers just get smashed off the ball and its not called a foul. Often it isn't a foul, its just their size being too much to skip around or push past.

Ah, the joys of watching good football succumb to physical football.

Still we're pushing on for 3rd and have a nice run on into the end of the season.

(Then i'm putting my them on the rack over the off-season. Stretch some height out of them)

Lizzy you are playing the "thugs" this week?

How do you think your boys will go? My oldest plays for this team. I am sure we are in for a very good game. Our team has improved alot over the past month or so despite our poor results.

Got thumped by Coburg after a very very even first half, thumped Whittlesea, conceded a late penalty against Cairnlea despite dominating, destroyed Essendon after conceding 3rd minute goal, and then were beaten by Melbourne Knights on the weekend.

My son will be playing against your son - maybe even direct opponents as my lad is a striker (not that we anticipate too much attacking!).

Hey Billy, Nice to hear from a direct opponent.

LOL at 'the thugs'. :innocent: How long have you been anonymously reading my reports? Cheeky! :nono: And where are yours?
Actually the real thugs of the league are Coburg. But I guess you know that.
Glad to hear your team is improving. No one likes one sided affairs and it is sad to see any team demoralized by a heap of goals. But we never underestimate anyone and you'd be surprised how much lower placed teams can turn it on when they see a chance to knock off the leaders.
Not that it happened this week. Middlin's team disposed of opposition 8 goals to nil yesterday. :smartass:

Youngest also had an excellent win (5-0) and maintain their place in the top 4. Not that I saw any of it. I had to take middlin to a team breakfast. Grrrrrrr.....

My eldest was the pride of the family this week. After playing approx 20 minutes total between the last 2 games (with assistant coach doing the job while coach was away) he played a full game against tough opposition and was named 'Man of the match'.:clap:

Worst Ref i've ever been involved with.

Missed a clear offside call (THAT WAS FLAGGED BY THE LINESMAN) to give them a free shot on goal.

Warned their goalie after he shoulder charged a player standing (not doing anything else) in the 18 yard box. It was the most blatant red card i've seen in a long time. Gave a yellow for a crunching studs up tackle on our DM. Missed a huge push in the back in the penalty box. Didn't leave the centre circle area for the whole game.

If only a complaint would result in some action.

Ended up coming back from 3-0 down to 3-2 before he blew the whistle (5 mins early).

Mighty Knox United U9's Crocs are in their 2nd season of football

Last season we played Stonnington in the mud they call a pitch (how can you live in Kooyong ffs and have such a shit heap as a pitch) and they beat us 11-1

Yesterday at the Mudheap again!!! we played them again and our improvement was there for all to see, and 8-1 WIN!!!!!!

Funniest thing was the ball at one stage landed in a huge puddle (on the pitch mind) and all the boys stopped and watched it (the puddle was deep) and all you saw was this ball bobbing around on the water as 5 boys all stared at it

Box Hill Under 12B travelled to Oakleigh & played on the paddock at the back of the beautiful main pitch. They won 3-1 to maintain 2nd spot so it looks like Under 13A East next year.

We conceded a goal as the 18 yard box line at one end was non existent & our keeper stepped out of it. They scored directly from the free kick which was well taken, just like the money the Ref took & didn't check the pitch beforehand. Obviously it was too cold for him!!

Actually the real thugs of the league are Coburg. But I guess you know that.

Well actually I would like to retract this statement.
Billy your team are still the 'thugs' of the league.
You saw it. I saw it.
At least Coburg play some decent football at times.
Whatever they are paying the 'NEW COACH', it is not enough. Get out while you still have some self respect.

Oh and 3-0!

Well what an awesome day for my 12 yo's team.
Holding onto 4th place they played the unbeaten league leaders away from home and knocked them off 3-2.:clap: What a fantastic game from two talented and determined sides. Our underdogs came back from 1 nil at half time to go 2-1 up soon after the break. Held the lead for about 10 minutes then rode the equalizer, and finally got the winner 5 minutes from time. The opposition celebrated wildly when they got back to 2-2 showing that they thought they were going down and would have been happy with the point. But our lads wanted more and pressed for the winner. Such delight when they got it and also at the final whistle. Coach (husband) still beaming!

Middlin played in game mentioned in my previous post. A 3 nil win. Faced many bewildering decisions by a Turkish ref at Turkish club. Mmmmm….. Crappy number 2 pitch which stiffled our fluid passing style. (But I guess most grounds were atrocious this week.) Opposition more intent on playing the man and removing the legs from under players than anything else. Gave new meaning to the word LATE. Even the NEW COACH was shouting out at them ‘UNNECESSARY!’ every third foul or so. :nono:But our boys got the job done and we got away without any serious injuries. Opposition have 8 points from 14 games and will surely be relegated. So at least we won’t be playing them again.

Eldest’s U21’s had another 2-1 loss but the team is decimated by injury at the moment with many first teamers out and Club Under 18’s stepping in to help out. My son had a good game and played with intelligence and determination but found the 90 minutes an extremely frustrating experience.

Sons team beat Richmond 5-0 at hme to maintain second place in Under 12B East. It could have been many more if the lads had taken their chances. Richmond keeper was good, even saving a shot with his face & got straight back uop to play. The lad played well at Right Back.

We have teed up a friendly against Moreland City Under 12B in 2 weeks time. Has anybody played them and what are they like?

West U12B Brimbank lost to Cairnlea 2-1 in a very SOLID performance considering Cairnlea are undefeated and only conceded 5 goals all year.
1-1 at the break and the coach & parents were all confident of at least a draw, but conceded a penalty around 7 mins from time which they converted. The boy picked the right way, but still needed a step ladder to reach it.
Nearly had a tear in the eye after the game as the poor boy who gave away the penalty was crying and very upset. Told him to keep his head up as he had a fantastic game.
Great effort by all the team.

Youngest had a 2-0 loss. Coach devastated. I think they all still had big heads from knocking off the leaders last week. Still in the race for a top 4 position but spoiled the chance to pull away from 5th, 6th and 7th. Luckily 5th also lost. I wasn't there but my son said he had a good second half after not seeing much of the ball in the first. Oh and our centre back got knocked out (sort of) from a clearance by our left back.

Middlin has a virus and did not play, (in fact is home today still crook). Got all kitted out though as team photos were scheduled before kick off. Defence was a shambles at times without him and Coach asked him 3 or 4 times if he thought he could go on, LOL. Strikers missed a lot of chances and got caught offside over 15 times. But we secured a 2-1 win in the end.

Eldest had my hubby watching him and my text updates told me he was playing a good game. They were 1 nil down at halftime. Then husband reported that my son didn't come out of the rooms with the rest of the players. Apparently he was throwing up in the break so the coach subbed him. Drew 1-1.

It looks like you'll win the flag this year. My son plays at Box Hill who look like they'll be runners up to you unless you have a massive slump in form.

Interesting to note that there are no match reports on your website regarding the 2 games we drew with you!! I hope you appreciated our dad refereeing the match of the season over at your when the one FFV Ref decided to ref an Under 12E game which innvovled the bottom side!!:tank:

The referee you guys supplied was by far the best we've had all season - added to the intensity of the game. Speaking of which I must congratulate the Box Hill side, not only the best opponents we have come up against on a technical level but also display the best sportsmanship of any team in the league.

Thanks for that. It is feelings mutual based on comments and discussions I've had with parents (BTW I am NOT the coach!!) at our team. Both the matches were great both technically & physically.

I believe over the course of the season the table doesn't lie. Your goals for statistic is absolutely amazing. One other bit of priase is for the lad at the match at yours who put in a magnificent tackle on our striker, fast, hard & accurate!! Our ref thought it was good too!!

All the best for the rest of the season & looking forward to locking horns with the lads in Yellow & Green next year!!

I am a defender & that tackle left me drooling. I was close as I was the linesman on the day. The Ref was meant to run the line so I volunteered to cover him so he could ref. He is qualified but currently (despite his calls to the FFV!!) does not referee in an official capacity.

I copped a bit for the offside in the first half when our striker got played through. I reckon I got it right on the day. It was one of those games when it would have been a shame for one team to lose. You came very close at the end with a shot which our keeper managed to hold onto!!

Have you thought of trying to an entice a certain Japanese kid back? He is a loss to soccer?!

Did a great job considering I don't think he had ever played at the back before

Youngest had an excellent 2 nil win and to be honest it could have been 6 or 7 but for some dreadful shooting. I watched this one from the car with the wipers on. Soooooo cold and didn't stop raining all game. We had been expecting a tough game from this team but our boys really put it together and were still knocking around some great passes in the difficult conditions. Coach smiling again.

Middlin was back in fine form against opposition that never really troubled us. (In fact he tells me he only had 8 touches. LOL! ) Won 4-1. Opposition won an edge of the box free kick for pushing. Our keeper lined up the wall well on one side and then stood behind it. ???? Their lad put it neatly into the corner he should have been covering. Oh well. My son was livid at the team conceding a goal but they are still on track to keep goals against in single figures for the season - currently 8.

Eldest had his game postponed. Ground was already looking poor and it was obvious they didn't want them messing up the ground for the seniors.

Off on a skiing holiday on Friday so 2 of my 3 will be missing their catch up games this weekend. I booked the catch up round way back in March with hopes that none of them would get a postponed game. I gambled.....................I lost!

Little girl had no game today.

Boy's team met the top of the ladder team. These last games will decide if they finish 4th or 2nd. They conceded three in the first half. Gave away a quick one early, and my boy perhaps should have come off his line. The other two he really had no say in. Did a couple of good saves; fumbled a couple of times but rescued it.

Big girl's team put in a very good first half, but failed to get one into the net. They were much weaker in the second half. No subs either. But the defence hung on, and the keeper put in a great game. Kept the others scoreless too, so we picked up another point for a 0-0 draw.

She also played half a game for the seniors.

Last week, the little one won 4-0. Coming home at the end of the day we were hoping to hear the boy won too to get a 3 out of 3 for once in the season. Turns out they drew though. And he got a yellow card.

Middlin's team won 4-2. All my son had to say was 'two goals!!! - how did they let in two goals?'. I think he'd better keep his mouth shut when we return. He is the team's main defender after all. Could be some blame coming his way, LOL!

Hey Rovers coach, we won 4-0 and after the kids got started (you could tell they'd had last week off) we started to put it together and went in 1-0. The boys then put on another 3 in the 2nd half.

We got off to a very slow start - the boys took a long time in getting it together today - and went down 1-0 early. Luckily a very good individual effort by one of our boys got us back to 1-1 just before half time.

During the break I reminded the boys about supporting each other and using what space there was. 2nd Half was a different story with the ball only coming into our half on a couple of occassions. 3 goals in the first 10 minutes of the half killed off the game and added another later on for a 5-1 win.

Its been a great season - am glad that the boys from Box Hill pushed us all the way (perhaps if our next clash is a draw we should end it with a penalty shootout!)

Little girl continued the successful run handing out a 6-0 drubbing. She was in defence for the first half and did not get a single touch.

Boy had a bye and they gave them the weekend off for once. He went to watch an Aussie Rules junior final that ended with an all-in brawl on the pitch and the siren sounding early.

Big girl played 2 games again. We had to borrow some players from the OW (they have several who are young enough) cause our numbers were a bit down.
U16 game was against a remarkably disciplined Maco side. None of their parents came, and the coach sat down to watch the preceding game while the girls warmed themselves up with military precision. Other teams in the comp have reported being scared of this outfit, but they have been fine with us.
Anyway, we lost again 2-0, but the coach was very pleased with how they played.

Her second game with the OW they handed out a 7-0 drubbing to a side that must have been badly depleted. They beat us comprehensively last time. Assuming they have a key defender who was out for the day.

Seasons over - time for a rest and if Im lucky, A Sunday sleep in

From our clubs perspective we over-achieved from where we thought we would end up.
We went from 4 teams to 7, so obviously 3 new teams
Under 9's Sat all 1st year plaers bar 2, started slowly as expected but ended up with 3 wins and were competitive during the last 1/2 season

Under 9 Sun (my mighty Crocs) only lost 3 games. There were certainly a few better teams than us skill and development wise, but we were one of the few who didnt run out an A and B side, we played the good kids with the triers as well. Very proud of the boys and girls
Note: The saddest thing Ive seen all season occurred this weekend against Box Hill Inter at our home ground. BHI were supposedly undefeated all season, and whilst the better side skilfully, lost 2-1 to us, even if we did spend the entire 2nd half defending. Their coach congratulated our keeper which was nice but a number of their parents were telling their kids that they would take it as a 2-all draw so they could say they were undefeated!!! How bizarre and how WRONG a message is that to Under 9 kids. They were the biggestembarrasment of the season - Pity really cos their kids were very good players

Under 10's finsihed strongly with a good few wins and a draws. A step up from last season with only 1 win and still the squad lacks numbers

Under 11's Kangas and Joys were all mid table - Joeys were a brand new side made up with a number of U10 and U9 players. Finished 4th!!
Kangas finished 4th also I think and played in the Kanga Cup in Canberra

Under 13s had a brand new team and finished midtable in 1 league, but the U13D side won the league!! - Our first ever Junior champioship and these kids have only been together for 2 years. Fantastic effort

So well done all at Knox United, and we look forward to even bigger things next year!!

From a personal perspective, there is no greater sporting joy than seeing players you coach develop and improve their game. Some kids you coach will always be good players and willing to learn, but to see the development in a child who isnt a "natural" but is learning from what your developing within them is wonderful

I would recommend coaching juniors and sub-junious to everyone (also its gotta be better than being Team manager lol )
