Here's one for all the soccer Mums and Dads. Junior League games start tomorrow. Let us know where.
I've got two playing for Brunswick City, U11 boys and U14 girls.

Daydream, is your kid in a team?

(Kvelling is a Yiddish word. It means the feeling or look of pride you see on parents watching their children. This thread was originally set up for the parents to boast about their offspring playing in inept junior teams - or at least to regale us with their stories. But the older kids are welcome to boast on their own behalf if they feel so moved.)

Yep, he's in subjuniors at Richmond JSC and they had a practise match today (was his first REAL game) with the other teams (there's 4 U8 teams) and he scored this killer goal, lobbed it over the keepr, a la Totti! Geez, I was proud! Don't like to overly praise him though, he's a damn good player, and he knows it!
Bloody hell there was some full on Soccer mums and dad's on the sideline! I'm definitely gonna keep my mouth zipped during the season! Some people just go too far, bitching about players and refs and the other team (OUR other team in this case), and it was just an U8 practise match! Hate to see what happens when the season proper starts!

our games are going ahead, even though ours is a Greek club - the girls are kicking off at 12.30, so the yiayiades are really happy :(

Well Sunbury is no Greek club we are full of Aussies and English. The other team cancelled I wanted to still play!! Actually 6 of us were born in England I was and 2 of my best mates. So we are fare from a Greek Club!

as far as I was aware, i thought that the FFV tried to work it so that clubs conected to the Greek community play each other this weekend, giving them an opportunity to both agree to postponing the match, which I reckon is a great idea. Our team postponed last year, but as far as I'm aware we're playing tomorrow, got more women who aren't greek in our team this year, means we can probably cover for those who can't make it.

did they win.
I think one was a draw (the ref stopped it after the other team scored, as all the kids were over it, and he thought 1-1 was a god score to end on), and the first game I think they won, wasn't really keeping count of the goals, I know both teams scored heaps, would been something like a 7-8 scoreline or something ridiculous like that. BUT they had a ball and were completely exhausted when they came off the ground, even though they were playing across a full sized ptich, still a lot of ground for little legs to cover!

if so it didn't seem to work for us
but maybe we didn't have enough other orthodox teams in the same league
we have a local derby for the girls - Brunswick City v Brunswick Zebras in U12 and U14

I know one of the girls (goes to our school) who plays for U12 (I think, maybe U14) Brunswick Zebras, she used to play for Clifton Hill, but they couldn't accomodate very well for girls teams, still don't have any junior girls teams now, i don't think, bit of a boys club, our one is...

zebras are strong with girls - U12 and U14 both for a couple of years
we had U13 last year, cos my girl and a couple of others brought the age up, but this year we finally had enough to split them
Essendon Royals have two U12s and two U16s (bit weird) so the girls are going strong around here
but there are a lot more girls teams on the other side of the Yarra (and the girls are bigger too)

I hear down Brighton way there's a massive girls club, they have a girls only goalkick too.
It's really interesting with girls, I coach at our school on wednesdays and we have boys and girls, but for the game at the end of training I split them up into a girls game and a boys game. The girls really shine when they play against just each other, they have heaps more confidence to go forward, or try to travel with the ball, but when they play with the boys, they really sit back and defend. Big mistake I noticed with the girls is identifying them as having strong defensive skills without looking at wWHY it was they weren't attacking.....

I've been interested to watch our coaches over the last couple of years try to figure out how to coach girls - they used to try to stop them talking to each other, then they realised that girls have to talk
they have also found that the girls are very reliable - show up to training and stuff
their training focusses less on fitness, because most of the girls take responsibility for that themselves - they will do laps spontaneously without being told
but they need heaps more focus on skills, cos they don't really tend to do individual ball practise, or play kick-to-kick at school

I've noticed since my son took it up that he goes outside every day to practise his juggling, but my daughter would never do that

That's really interesting! Glad you brought these things up, cos I'm new to coaching, and am really interested in coaching girls. I don't have very good skills myself, could never coach boys, they'd show me up, geez my 7yo son shows me up now! Although I must say, even though I can't do a lot of stuff myself, I'm finding that it's not essential, although it's preferable, to be able to do the stuff that you're trying to teach. I can't juggle for shit, but i know how to teach the technique of juggling to the kids. And the more I think about it, I'm getting pretty familiar with the boys and they're starting to respond to my coaching style quite well. LOVE coaching kids, they're SOOO into it!

So our season has started.
Last week the boys managed a 2-2 draw and mine acquitted himself well with 2 goal assists.
The girls took a major thumping up with a 6-0 loss. There is probably a lot more of that coming, given that half of them have never played before. But they took it well, and fought to the end, so fair play to them. I think half the point of junior soccer is learning to cope emotionally. On the up side, our under 12 girls beat the same club 6-0, so we're even across the two games.
This week the distaff side meets Bundoora at home, in Bundoora's first game (wonder why they got the bye? are they Greek too?), while the boy plays Epping away.

boys one 2-1 with a controversial last minute goal that everyone saw except the ref
girls got another thumping - poor dears, in the pouring rain, and the other team actually weren't as much better than them as the final scoreline; now our question will be how to keep up the morale while we wait for the newcomers to learn something about how to play the game

We were supposed to go to another practise match this Saturday before their season proper starts next week, but went to a friends birthday party instead. am actually starting to think seriously about NOT starting my son in a proper team for this season, can't afford it, and it takes up a huge amount of time. A friend and I informally train the kids at school on Wednesdays, and there's a group of kids who get together for a kick every sunday morning, I'm thinking that might be enough for him for the moment. Have to have a good hard think about it.

no such thing as "Greek" Easter

its ORTHODOX EASTER, it just happens that "Greeks" like Macedonians, Russians, Serbians, Bulgarians, Ukraniens etc etc also celebrate ORTHODOX EASTER

am actually starting to think seriously about NOT starting my son in a proper team for this season
how come you haven't had to decide already
I'd say not to, if he is happy with the informal stuff
you've got years of all that ahead of you - no need to start too soon

we have four nights a week of training 6- 7.30, so always someone missing for dinner
then a game at 9.00 and another at 12.30 on Sundays

I think having your son in a team could start your challenge your own options for continuing to play yourself

but if they are expecting him and the team doesn't have the numbers without him, maybe it is too late to pull out - hate to be the cause of all that disappointment for the other kids

no worries chap, i just wanted to correct peoples mistakes

do you happen to know exactly why it is when it is?

using different calander, the julian and gregorian calanders, Orthodox use one of them, Catholic use the other

they correct themselves as every four years i think the Orthodox and Catholic people celebrate Easter same time, except for Christmas, which would be done on the 7th January, new year 14th January

the Greek Orthodox Church changed it for their church in regards to Christmas, best to ask a "greek" as to why they did that

as far as i know the rest of the Orthodox followers in Europe celebrate Easter and Christmas at the same time (ie all Macedonian, Russian, Serbian etc etc churches) and a little latter than Catholics

we had another shocking weekend
not looking like there'll be too much to boast about this weekend
the boys got hammered 10-0 in pouring rain and hail - and my boy was in goals half the time
the girls played a lot better, but still lost, with a more respectable 2-0 this time
and they were a bit stuffed around by the fact that the FFV changed the fixture and didn't tell anyone

Not a good period at the moment for us :(

In the last three games we've conceded a grand total of 22 goals  We've scored 6. We lost to Altona City 7-2, Werribee City 9-1 and Sydenham Park 6-3. The problem has been discovered as lack of fitness throughout the entire side. We've been level at half-time in all htree games but consistently get hammered in the second half because we don't have the legs to run it out.

On a personal note after scoring a free kick a few weeks back Ive hit scoring form in the last two weeks as I've been pushed up to center forward. Three goals in two weeks.

Carlton life member
June 4th, 2006, 06:26 PM
we've been having a crap season too - as have all our friends and cousins
how can it be that all the teams I know personally lose all the time - there must be winners somewhere?

the girls are improving steadily in their technique and understanding. the scoreline is improving from pitiful to bad
last week they actually put up a pretty good effort against the top of the ladder - they led 2-1 at the break, but conceded another 2 in the second to go down 3-2 at the end

the boys are also losing steadily, but conceding fewer goals with time
we have had the genius to put our boy forward as keeper
he is taking to it quite well, and going out for extra training with Dad at every opportunity
he quite likes hurling himself at hard objects so he is suited to it
and the brilliance of this is that it means that he is enjoying his team getting attacked cos it gives him plenty to do
today he did 3 actually good saves
and was unlucky to concede a goal after the ref failed to stop player when he was kicked in the head
they went down 4-0, but he came home all excited and told me about every goal

Masterchief_the_Return
June 5th, 2006, 06:45 PM

finally some different news
couldn't very well come on here and report thumpings week in week out - v boring

last Sunday, my boy declared he had two aims for the game;
keep the opposition to less than 7 goals (they are modest aims)
and not let them score too early

he came home covered in mud from head to foot and well satisfied
they went down by only 4 goals
and he kept a clean sheet for the whole first half

witnesses say he did several quality saves, including a great one on one, and that opposition fans were heard to remark on the quality of our keeper

and in other developments
the girls team has a new coach

as with the Socceroos, the old coach was a nice guy, and the girls skills were improving
but they couldn't take a trick against opposition they should have been able to beat

the new coach has greater prestige - he is an import, and from a higher standard of the game - and he is taking fitness much more seriously

and blow me down if they didn't actually WIN Sunday's match
their first win for the season
they were SO excited

our girls went down 2 nil early - and in the past this is where they would have chucked in the towel
but they got one, then the others got another
then they got another 2 to equalise at half time, including a penalty for a handball

season over for the 11 year old

no more training on Wednesdays and Fridays - yay

he had a great time this year

played for a pretty crap team that struggled sometimes to field a full side
but they won 3 games, so that is all right
learnt heaps
found his vocation as a goalie
gave his Dad plenty of opportunities to be a linesman

I reckon he will be playing for a few years yet

the older girl has a tournament next couple of weekends, so it is not all over yet for her

so the season came to an end

the girl rounded it off with participation in a small tournament

they won their first game 3-0
and MY DAUGHTER scored a goal, which was unprecedented and unexpected

the following week they lost one and won another one

so they qualified for the final
which they lost 1-0

my daughter might have equalised in the 90th minute, but a quick thinking defender tracked back admirably fast, and collided with her just before she managed to get a foot properly to the ball

she went down like Matterazzi and got a massive bruise on her arm

and came home well satisfied with a runner up medal

We are currently playing in the Whittlesea cup which we never should've been entered in.

There are four teams in it:

Meadow Park (us) (Finished 2nd last in NW U16B)
Bundoora (NW U16A)
Whittlesea Utd (NW U16 Super League)
Preston Lions (MW U16 Super League)

In the first round played on Saturday these were the results:

Whittlesea 1 - 0 Preston
Bundoora 2 - 2 Meadow Park

We got a very unexpected draw, I scored a penalty and my teammate scored a free kick from half way, yes half way. (The ball was on the half way line)

time to revive this I reckon

pre-season for juniors in the City of Moreland has been tense, and fraught with drama due to the Council decision not to allow anyone to use any of the pitches

groups of kids in mufti have been turning up at parks all over the city, training while they pretend to be having an informal kick-around

other guerilla groups have staged raids to conduct training in the City of Moonee Valley, which apparently does not have a drought

Council has made various dubious decisions,
such as
deciding to chuck all the Zebras off their ground at 6.15 on a training night, just AFTER all the parents had dropped their kids off and gone home to put the dinner on

ruling that U12s could train, but 13-18s could not
and then deciding that City U12s did not fit the category of U12, and were still not allowed to use the pitch

and, most recently, deciding to let some of the clubs back on their pitches as of this week, while keeping others off until May 1

always the way

we started the pre-season that we were going to have an U13 and an U15
then the U13 coach defected to another club and tried to take both teams with him

but the U15 coach wanted to stay put, and encouraged the girls to stay there, and play U16

so the team split, with some to each club
and our coach started recruiting like mad
and we had 23 training,
and there was going to be a U15 and a U16

then people didn't cough up the dough, and there was no team manager
and chaos with the grounds
and they missed the team registration deadline

so then we find we can't register an U16 any more
and we have a mix of girls of all ages

for now, it looks like we have 14 girls signed up to U15
and the others may be open age, or U18
if we have enough of them
and some of the U15s are talking about switching
and I worry some of the kids are going to miss out altogether

my team, Watsonia heights under 16's --:(-- (you'll know why if you've ever played us) have first game on the 29th, against South Yarra. We were going to play a somalian street team but they dropped out on us :(

lucky for us we've been training on pitches for over a month now, we have our full team of players (16) but i don't think it'll help much as all but four, including me, should really be in U/15s.

I am optimistic we'll win or draw at least one game this year, because we've recruited 7 players in the off-season, i don't know how we got some of these guys as one kid used to play super league, and they're all probably better than last year's group anyway.

At the moment it looks as if i will be playing sweeper or center defence, which is good cos thats where i want to be :)

anyone else playing in that area? (i don't know what league we're in yet, it hasn't been decided but last year we played teams like lalor and northcote)

edit: didnt note the time the post was made.

No worries, I appreciate the info anyway, I pulled him out of the comp last year, for a couple of reasons, but he's going back into it again this year.

Anyway if it relates to Juniors Kvelling I'm right in the middle of my junior coaching licence course. Jony and Ella can prove it too. Today is my practical test :ohwell:

My boy is playing in a pre-season comp today.

He has had a promotion of sorts. After his debut for the U11Bs last season, he has been selected as the U12As keeper for this season.

He earnt his place by A) being the only candidate for the role, after last year's A keeper defected to the Royals, and B) a couple of good saves in a friendly against Northcote a couple of weeks ago.

In one, he dived to the feet of their striker, and kept the ball firmly clutched to his chest, while the striker slid helplessly into his forehead, knees first, and knocked him out.
In another, the opposition had a free from the edge of the box. He jumped up with finger outstretched. Lucky for him, the ball bounced off the bar and out, and got kicked away. Got to feel sorry for junior goalies playing in full size goals. But he did have his arm out at full stretch in EXACTLY the right spot.
Plenty of kvelling for me that day.

possibly a good argument for keepers to start out reasonably intelligent, since they are going to lose an IQ point or so with each concussion

what do you think about mouth guards?

My dentist more or less cracked it when he found out a. that I played football, b. that I played keeper and c. that I had been knocked out a few times...

I don't think I would ever have worn one if I continued to play. Mainly because I believe one of the most important things that a goalkeeper can do is talk to his/her team. After all, the goalkeeper is the ONLY player (on each team) who can actually see the whole field. Now, I've never worn a mouthguard but the last thing I would want to do is distract myself with trying to put it in and out the whole time while wearing gloves... and imagine trying to organise the defence against free kicks/corners/sudden attacks. There is simply no time to pull the guard in and out.

The only damage I've ever done is a chipped tooth - and that wasn't even while playing football. I haven't broken a bone yet either. Nor have I had the chicken pox... stay away anyone with chicken pox...

when i was playing keeper a couple of years back my dad tried to make me wear a mouthguard, but i wouldn't because a) it's really uncomfortable, and b) it makes it impossible to talk properly so i couldn't organise the defence.

A-ha! So I was correct... you see my dentist doesn't play football... he's built like a rugby player though, which is incredibly intimidating when you walk in...

-It makes it a LOT harder to breathe

-It doesn't actually protect too much

Overall - We played good, we dominated the whole game, didnt finish off our chances well enough though, I scored 4 goals, although i still played shit because i should have had 10 i was pretty happy with our result considering last year we only won 4-1

always the way

we started the pre-season that we were going to have an U13 and an U15
then the U13 coach defected to another club and tried to take both teams with him

but the U15 coach wanted to stay put, and encouraged the girls to stay there, and play U16

so the team split, with some to each club
and our coach started recruiting like mad
and we had 23 training,
and there was going to be a U15 and a U16

then people didn't cough up the dough, and there was no team manager
and chaos with the grounds
and they missed the team registration deadline

so then we find we can't register an U16 any more
and we have a mix of girls of all ages

for now, it looks like we have 14 girls signed up to U15
and the others may be open age, or U18
if we have enough of them
and some of the U15s are talking about switching
and I worry some of the kids are going to miss out altogether

Out of curiousty, what club are your children at. I know that at my former club they had a very strong womens contingent. Said to be one of the best in Victoria.

On a personal note after scoring a free kick a few weeks back Ive hit scoring form in the last two weeks as I've been pushed up to center forward. Three goals in two weeks.

And now you're a Goalkeeper, Wow!

My husband played juniors at Watsonia Heights. He lived just around the corner from Gabonia Reserve.

Your team is in N/W 16B this season. You have Cairnlea (formerly Albion) away round 1.

Forgot my own kvelling:

My youngest played his 2nd practice game of the year winning 2-0. He scored the second goal :cheer2: and was over the moon since the Coach (his Dad) usually plays him in defence and he hasn't scored a goal for 2 years.

U13 son won 3-1 and played a good solid game at sweeper.

Eldest is having a shot at VPL ressies this season - but was not named in squad this week. It's a big step up and a BIG learning curve for all of us.

However you will find that the FFV just released fixtures 2 minutes ago so they are all up now. Good luck.

I have a son and daughter at Brunswick City, and a daughter at Pascoe Vale.

PVale is only setting up juniors this year, but wants to be serious about the girls.

City has a nice set up, but is not strong with the girls side.
Zebras are much stronger with the girls - more teams, more age groups, better results.

you should not focus on the results, kids need to learn to play well and pass well not just boot the ball. not saying that your daughters club only looks at the results but i do notice that when we watch a girls team that do well in the results most of the time the girls are just booting the ball and hoping it goes in, when these girls get to older aged leagues thats when they start getting beaten by the sides that they won against in the younger leagues.
my daughter played a friendly on the weekend against her clubs Under 12 girls side, she asked me how they did and i said "GREAT, your team may have lost by two goals but most of you listened at halftime and started passing the ball around and thats when you scored all your goals, and if you had watched the under 12 girls you would of seen that the only way they got a goal was by toe punting the ball and hoping it goes in."
if we lose every game this season i do not mind as long as ALL the girls have learnt and improved by the end of the season. if we win thats great too but i don't want them playing just to win.

I don't focus on results at all
I'd be in trouble if we did, cos our kids get thumped all the time

we focus mainly on them learning to understand the game, esp where to position themselves and use space

but I feel I need to recognise where another local club has had success, both on and off the field
the zebras have done very well in setting up a girls side to the club where they feel taken seriously
and I think that administrative support has also paid off on the pitch

Generally released 2 weeks after junior fixtures since the sub jnr comps start 2 weeks after jnr comps.

Disgraceful coaching. You won 7-0, if he feels you could've won by more he should've made you guys do shooting practice, fitness training won't solve anything at all.

Nah nah dont get the wrong idea, i wasnt complaining about my coach i was complaining about my fitness...he thinks we should have won by more but he thinks the reason we didnt is because we were tired (which he is probably right).
