View Full Version : Is there a quota on foreign players in the A-League?

Does anyone know the answer to this?
I know that each club will have a squad of 20, and 3 of them have to be under 20 years of age (I assume those 3 at least have to be Aussies!), but I have not heard about any limits on the number of foreigners.
I read that Queensland Lions are looking to have up to 8 overseas players in their squad (or at least, they are going to trial 8 players).
I don't think an "Arsenal-style" situation where the majority of the team are foreigners is healthy for local development. It may be more entertaining/skillful, but what about developing players to be future Socceroos?
I think there should be a cap on the number of foreign players.

I think so too, but I'm not aware of one at the moment ... and the ASA as yet has not explicitly stated there indeed is one. Or have they? I honestly don't know.

I see no problem with a player quota for non-Australians, however I feel that clubs should be (and are, e.g. Fa'Arodo with Glory) looking at developing the game throughout the region to get that automatic WC spot back. What I'm saying is, there's no problem with players outside Australia, but the emphasis on overseas players should be on signing those from Fiji, Tahiti, Solomons etc.

Haven't heard of any limits on foreigners, but I don't see a problem either if there was a limit.
I agree with Mooks in that as the top nation in Oceania we should look at signing players from the Pacific Islands for the A-League, it will certainly help the players develop

Well there's rumours that 2 Brazilians (Luizao one of them), a Colombian and an Italian are interested in coming down.

Queensland Lions said that they would only sign 4 overseas players of these 8 trialling.
In the NSL im pretty sure they had a no more than 3 foreigners in a match day squad rule, but due to the lack of foreigners in the NSL it was never a huge issue. Maybe they will still implement this?

Apparently one of foreign players, which the Queensland Lions are interested in is Fernando Rech.
If for some reason, Queensland Lions do not sign him, he the sort of foreign player that Melbourne Victory should consider, because he is a player of proven quality.

No qouta's have been set yet, I was under the impression that the A-League workshop was going to resolve all those issues, but perhaps a ruling on that is still to come or none at all.

Yer? And how has ol' Frank Lowy provoked you in anyway?

He attacked our club and all other ethnic clubs by expelling them from national competition.
How funny is it, Frank Lowy owned the St Kilda Hakoah team back in the 70's and Melbourne Croatia supporters beat the fuck out of their supporters, a bit of crowd trouble.
He must really hold it against Knights for that, a bit of a grudge.
Geez I wonder why he didn't want us a part of the new league.

Well Lowy wasn't the one that didn't want you to be part of the new A-League, do you think he has been the one constructing this league?
And as far as im concerned Melbourne Knights never made a huge effort to be part of the A-League.

Yeah, that's because we don't want to be part of this league.

Mr Lowy is the man in charge and he dislikes Knights and Croats, always has, always will, remember money = power !

Well whether Frank Lowy likes or dislikes Croats or not it doesn't matter, he is having no say in this new national competition.
Yeah, that's because we don't want to be part of this league.
ROFLMAO....thanks you made my day.
If you don't want any part in this new national comp then what is the problem may i ask?

Come on give us some time to respond I just logged on.
My problems are:
1. Your supporters rascist slurs towards Croats
2. Total disrespect towards Knights, treating us like we are criminals, a disease that you think has been removed from soccer
3. Making fun of Knights and its supporters
4. Thinking your so better than us.

This is exactly the reason some of you stupidly think the Victory can average 25 000 in it's first year. you don't understand the slander and corruption and hidden agendas involved in Soccer Australia over the last 10 years. It's going to take a whole new generation of people for soccer to be big in this country.
I think it's the absoulte wrong time for it but Frank Lowy etc.. have been forced to do so because of David Hill who has ruined any chance of a nice easy reform process once the old clubs died out.

Why does it have to be? When the crawford report was being done ages ago they said that most Australians actually give a shit about soccer whether it be here or something like the premier league.
The fans are there and there is absolutely no doubt about that, its a question of whether they can really convert.

You didn't answer the question - who is doing the bagging? Apart from one post from a known forum shit-stirrer, I think you will struggle to find anyone.
