View Full Version : Overlooked Milicevic lashes out

FORMER Olyroos captain Ljubo Milicevic has lashed out at being left out of the Socceroos squad, saying he would have had a better chance of reaching the World Cup if he played in the A-League instead of the Champions League.
"Being left out is pretty hard to swallow considering the season I've had. I had to have a laugh. I'm not that surprised, to be honest. I never had much contact from the national team and I was always pessimistic about the World Cup. My instincts were right," Milicevic said.
After a season in which he played in the Champions League and UEFA Cup and captained his club, Swiss side Thun, Milicevic has more reason than others to feel shortchanged. In two years, he has gone from being captain of the 2004 Olympic team, highly rated by Frank Farina, to international wilderness.
"I think people involved have very short memories," said the defender. "I was captain of the under-20s and captain of the Olympic team. I picked up two injuries playing for Australia. I had a horrific run of injuries playing for Australia and came back (to fitness) to captain my team in Europe but I'm obviously not good enough for Australia.
"Maybe I should move back to Australia. You seem to have a better chance of playing for Australia if you're playing in the A-League than in the Champions League against Thierry Henry. In Australia, the opponents are obviously better than Thierry Henry.
"I played Champions League, UEFA Cup and captained my team and that's not good enough? I'm sorry. People I don't know and people who I never expected to hear from say it's bullshit."
Coach Guus Hiddink's scouts, including assistants Graham Arnold and Johan Neeskens, watched all candidates play before announcing the 23-man squad. Milicevic did not fit Hiddink's jigsaw of mobility and adaptability.
Milicevic, who missed Australia's last friendly before the Uruguay play-off to attend his brother's wedding in Melbourne, is on a standby list.
While unable to impress Hiddink, he has attracted interest from top German sides. "Within a month I should know where I'm playing next season. I'm going to focus on myself and my own career."

I agree with what he's saying, but to come out and publically voice those opinions shows a lack of respect, professionalism and humility; even if it can be justified.

Sure he played a pretty damn good seaon, but to come out like that?
I think by saying that he has pretty much killed any chance he had of a remote call up.
He just didn't figure into Guus' plan. He may have fitted the next coachs plan but as I said he has pretty much killed it off IMO.
I thought he had some real quality about him to... except his gay sounding voice and lisp.

he has every right to voice his opinion just like we bullshit on about everything on here. he has more right than us to say anything. what we forget is we are but insignificant compared to him. he cops the shit while we dish it out. fuck guss

where do you go when the greatest manager on earth simply doesn't rate your abilities?
whats his comeback?
"well well well ive been playing against thierry henry"
surprised he didn't pull out the old, it's all arnold's fault.

there are always people who miss out, and if none of it was controversial it would mean we had no depth
but you don't win friends with this kind of outburst - dissing other members of the squad, the coach and the whole national competition is not really good form
he is on the standby list, and injuries are not uncommon - he might have got the call up
but showing this kind of petulance is unlikely to improve his chances
Guus seems to have a reasonable record in these things - perhaps in fact Milecevic is not the right piece for this jigsaw

Well said.
Ljubo's outburst is unfair on Australian football as a whole. He hasnt figured in the team since the Confederations Cup, of which he didnt exactly light the world on fire.
Hes not the only player to miss out on selection; the likes of Scott McDonald, Brett Holman, Dean Heffernan and Brad Jones all missed out, but like Milosevic, they all have time on their side.
I dont see Ljubo figuring in the squad for a while now....

Milicevic has every reason to feel disappointed, because he has played well enough to probably warrant selection. Like Liam has said other good players have missed out and they have time on their side.
The likes of Moore and Popovic will most likely retire from the National Team after the World Cup, so you would think he would get his opportunity after the World Cup.

if you look at whats happened, Aus making WC for first time in 30 odd years, then mix it with the facts he brought up, (he did play ucl etc) then he has every right to be upset. Plus i couldn't care less about a so called disrespect or whatever, the guys probly just had his dream crushed... and for what - popovic (injured 2nd div player) miligan (young player, no chance of playing) Beauchamp (looked good against bahrain, but that not saying much). The fact that he has played ucl shows he has been in high pressure matches. If moore gets injured (which is not that unlikely) i would prefer to have someone like milicevic or kisnorbo in there than Popovic.

Personally, I think Milicevic is a complete tool. Therefore I couldn't give two stuffs. Very happy with the squad at the moment. I think that Guus is a master, and anyone doubting his abilities, after what he's already shown, is a clown.

If the selection is based on form which it looks like it is (Beauchamp, Milligan) then Milicevic should definately be in the squad. Out of all our defenders he has played the most and has played under the highest pressure this season.
The question I'm curious about is why wasn't he included over the likes of a 2nd division player in Popovic and Moore who played something like 10 games for the season. There is an underlying factor here and I would like to know what it is.

Is this the missing the friendlie for the brothers wedding incident? I know football important and all, but surely nothing less than an important WCQ or a WC itself is more important than a brothers wedding?
sirtrev
May 15th, 2006, 12:44 AM
Yes he's right but his timing (like his brother's wedding) is awful. I mean he is probably the first choice defender on the standby list.
With Harry and Cahill injured, Moore and Popo fragile and 4 weeks and 3 games to go, he should have bitten his tongue until he was definately not picked.
Maybe this outburst is typical of an arrogant personality that Guus doesn't want in the squad to wreck team spirit?

Yeah I'm suspecting it's something to do with what they know of his character and how he fits into the team as a person
maybe he's a cranky bastard who bags other players and brings them down

Ljubo continually bagged australia and our National team when we where in Year 12, saying that he would never make himself avaiable for the National team because Australia wasnt a real footballing nation, Then I hear about him he is captaining the Olyroos, bull shit if you ask me Karma me thinks....
I wont even start on what he said about the standard of the NSL and how he would never play in it but move to europe, I spose he threw out his NSL winners Medallion he got at Perth...
Arrogant and thats why Guus left him out, plus he is far to slow. Who are Thun again?

He is one person I just cant take to, very condesending towards Australians, and had high opinion of himself, but not those with in the game in this country. His latest comments proove that, especially ones about the A-League.

The fact that Milicevic has been to 3 clubs in the past 1 and a half years siggests that he is either arrogant, has an attitude problem or is crap or is both.

I love this attitude that we have now. Last year it seemed as though the fans and players of milicevics calabire had that "Too good for A-league" now its "Is he good enough?". Just an observation that i think is a showing how much our club has grown in a year.

Who was Rudan marking when he was in Singapore before Sydney?
Costanzo? all considered good defenders in this league.
Coming back to the a-league where Jamie Harnwell can be considered a striker, Carl Veart can be considered a decent striker, Adam Kwasnik can be considered a decent striker......which strikers in this league will trouble him? Milicic, Brosque, Mori, Burns (maybe), fuckin Zdrillic. Who?
