I was thinking of going as the Demons play the Crows 2 days later in Adelaide. So I was gonna do the double, unfortunately the day the dees play the crows, its the same day as the victory vs scum fc at the telstra dome. So i've decided to stay in Melbourne for that.

Let's hope there is a team to play, and lets hope when we go to Lebannon its safe by then, or they move the fixture to a neutral ground.

Yep, got my tickets yesterday.

I'll save booking my Jetstar flight till later. Don't want to have to cancel them if the Lebs can't make it out here.

For those that don't get across to GGA but are going.. the pre-game warmup is as follows:

"GGArmy's Adelaide crew has organised the Rosemont Hotel (160 Hindley Street, Adelaide) as THE pre-game meeting point for this big match"

do the Lebanese team players actually live in Lebanon?
or are they mainly expats?

do the Lebanese team players actually live in Lebanon?
or are they mainly expats?
as in do they play for Lebanese clubs or elsewhere?

from the AFC site: "German-based duo Roda Antar and Yousuf Mohamad, Mohammed Kassas of Saudi side Al Qadissiya and starlets Abbas Atwi and Ali Nassereddine will be the main men carrying the hope of the small West Asian nation on the continental stage."

i'm assuming most would be playing within their league with a few around the other Gulf nations.

Lebanon has pulled out of the AFC Asian Cup 2007 qualifiers due to the current crisis in the country.

The Lebanon Football Association officially sent a withdrawal letter to the AFC on Monday, July 31, stating that they “are unable to proceed” in the AFC Asian Cup 2007 qualification rounds “due to the tragic circumstances our country and people are passing through as a result of the barbaric attack imposed on Lebanon by the Israeli Army.”

Lebanon drew with Kuwait 1-1 in their opening game on February 22 and were due to meet Bahrain on August 16 (Manama), with further encounters scheduled against Australia on August 31 (Sydney), Bahrain on September 6 (Beirut), Kuwait on October 11 (Kuwait City) and Australia on November 15 (Beirut).

The AFC Management Board will convene in an emergency meeting today to discuss the situation.

Following is the full transcript of the letter sent by the Lebanon FA:

Dear sir,

We deeply regret informing you that we are unable to proceed in our participation in the AFC Asian Cup 2007 qualifications due to the to the tragic circumstances our country and people are passing through as a result of the barbaric attack imposed on Lebanon by the Israeli Army.”

We assume you are totally aware of the enormous disaster that overwhelmed our country, where hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their unsafe houses evading from this war, among which are several of our Lebanese national team players, who were separated from their families and lost all means of contact with them. Some of them had lost their houses and became abandoned.

Confronting this humanitarian horrible devastation, in addition to the closure of Beirut International Airport which was bombed by the Israeli aircrafts, then bombing the highway between Lebanon and Syria and subsequently blocking the way out, we had no other choice than informing you regretfully our decision to cease our participation in the AFC Asian Cup.

We look forward to your kind understanding of the reasons which caused such a decision and to your sympathising with us in this catastrophe.

Please accept our best regards.

Yours faithfully,

Signed

Lebanese Football Association

That is a damn shame, albeit expected. :( The Lebanese would have received tremendous support here from ex-pats.

Fuck war!

That's very sad.

Such a simple thing like playing a game of football can not be done due to this stupid war. What a shame for the people of Lebanon.

would basically assure us going through now with the top 2 in each group going through. disappointing though as i am sure we could have used the match practice for the team we would have put out on the park.

Hmm... I'm not surprised the game has been cancelled. It's a shame when the horrors of war can prevent something so simple as a football game from taking place.

I'd assume some have already booked their flights over to Adelaide... Well, at least you can still have a nice day in lovely Adelaide :o
