Vidmar to join Mariners (http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,20007866-23210,00.html)
August 3, 2006
VETERAN Socceroos defender Tony Vidmar is expected to announce tomorrow that he will resume his football career with the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League.
Vidmar underwent surgery in London recently to repair a blood clot in his left coronary artery which caused an irregular heart rhythm and forced him to miss the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The Adelaide-born defender had converted one of Australia's penalties during the tense shootout with Uruguay to qualify for the finals stage of the tournament.
Just last month the 36-year-old was cleared to return to playing and Vidmar will arrive in Sydney tomorrow morning to make the announcement about his future.
Network Seven tonight reported Vidmar will join the Mariners, runners up in last year's inaugural A-League season.

Australian defender Tony Vidmar confirmed he will resume his football career with the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League.
The 36-year-old Adelaide-born defender told Network Seven he was excited about coming back to Australia and linking with the inaugural A-League runners-up.
"I think it's the right time for me to come back home and the Mariners have given me that opportunity," Vidmar said.
"It's nice to come back to your local competition and hopefully it will be a success."
Vidmar's football career appeared over in May after he was forced to withdraw from the Socceroos squad selection for the 2006 World Cup because of an irregular heart rhythm.
But successful heart surgery in London for a blood clot in his left coronary artery has led to doctors giving Vidmar the all-clear to resume playing.
"Everything is good. I have had two further tests and it is all A okay and they have given me the green light to go for it," he said.
A senior member of the Socceroos team, Vidmar's experience shone through when he converted one of Australia's penalties during the tense shootout with Uruguay to qualify for the finals stage of the World Cup.

I think Vidmar will have a bit too much pace for Kev, then again so does a toddler.
