Invest in game not manager: Kosmina
By Tim Clarke
August 3, 2006
AFTER being handed the job of helping the next generation of Australia players onto the international stage, John Kosmina has urged Football Federation Australia to invest in the game locally, rather than spend millions on another big name manager.
The Adelaide United coach was today appointed assistant to head coach Graham Arnold for Australia's Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait on August 16, with the assignment beginning at a Melbourne training camp next week.
Kosmina, who played 60 full internationals in the green and gold, admitted it was an honour to be chosen to work with a new-look Socceroos squad.
"It has been a long time since I have been in an international camp, so I am looking forward to it. Even if it is for one game, then it will still be a great experience," Kosmina said.
"I had spoken to Arnie about it, so it is not like they told me 10 minutes ago or anything."
After saying earlier this year it could take generations before Australian coaches were good enough to again guide the Socceroos, Kosmina now thinks the FFA should look local for a long-term replacement for Guus Hiddink – with Arnold at the top of the list.
And he said the kind of money needed to lure a name such as Gerard Houllier should instead be spent on developing the game at its grass roots.
"The alternative is spending bucketloads of cash (on a foreign coach). I think they should invest locally, in coaches and players," Kosmina said.
"I am behind Arnie in the queue. If anyone should get it he should, because he would have learned bucketloads from (former coach) Guus (Hiddink).
"If they are going to spend big money, spend it here, because our current crop of (international) players are nearing the end of the road."
There are nine uncapped players in the training squad though many have played for Australia at youth level, including Victory's Kristian Sarkies and Adrian Leijer, Spase Dilevski of Queensland and Sydney's Alex Brosque.
Arnold and Kosmina will whittle down the group to form the backbone of an 18-man squad for the Kuwait match at Sydney's Aussie Stadium.
As for his day job, Kosmina said he did not think the Socceroos commitment would interfere with Adelaide's preparation for the new A-League season.
"It is just more football. I spend 26 hours a day thinking about football anyway, a couple more won't make a big difference," Kosmina said.
