Terry Butcher
New coach Terry Butcher was delighted with Sydney FC's commanding victory over Perth Glory in Wollongong on Sunday and hailed it their best performance of the season.

An Alex Brosque brace helped Sydney snare a 3-0 win in their Hyundai A-League Pre Season Cup clash at WIN Stadium to set up a semi-final clash with Adelaide United on Friday night.

The former England international and Motherwell coach praised his side's efforts at both ends of the field, and believes the inaugural Hyundai A-League champions will go a long way if they carry this form into the regular season.

"We've played four games and that was easily their best," Butcher said.

"If we can set that standard and keep that standard up, we should get results and we should get more goals.

"I'm thrilled because there's a lot of good football in the team and a lot of good attacking play as well and I'm pleased with the back four and Clint [Bolton] in goal because it's a clean sheet again."

Sydney was dominant in attack throughout the encounter and continually peppered Perth's goal as they looked to finish on top of group B heading into the semi-finals.

Butcher was pleased his charges followed the game plan they had spoken about prior to the match perfectly.

"[I was] delighted with their attitude and their work rate. We said before the game if they worked hard in the opposition end then we stand a very good chance of getting something from the game."

New Sydney recruit Brosque was exceptional again for the hosts, the 23-year-old's two goals in two minutes a testament to the danger he poses to opposition teams.

Together with David Carney, who also stood up for the hosts, Butcher is delighted with the versatility he has in the midfield.

"They're not bad players, are they? Not bad players to have on the team," Butcher jokingly understated. "They don't just stay out wide, they move in."

"If you've got a bit of pace as [Brosque] does, it certainly helps and he can finish as well - three goals and an assist."

Sydney must now concentrate on their showdown with Adelaide United on Friday, and Butcher admits it will be a tough encounter.

A number of key Sydney personnel will be in camp with the Qantas Socceroos during the week, but the coach said there would be no rest for the remaining players.

"The ones that are with us will be working hard," he said. "I don't know if the ones that go away will be working equally as hard."

"We saw Adelaide on a DVD, the last match that they played, they're a difficult team to play against, a very hard team.

"I know we had our problems against them last year against them, so looking forward to it very much."

We played very well ,last nite, the combination with Brosque and Carney was excellent. We have also signed Nikolai Topor-Stanley as a CB, he has not had a bad game in pre-season at all.

Perth were rubbish last nite, they will struggle this season.

Sydney clearly look to be the class side this year. Brosque is a great signing, and keeping carney on for another season just looks bad for everyone else. Just a question, have they been playing Brockie, i haven't heard anything about him for a while. Will be a big test vs Adelaide though, it will be surprising if Kosmina allows the likes of Carney and brosque to play a free flowing game.

brockie played in the last 10 minutes of that game, he was coming off an injury and wasnt expected to play v perth. Zadkovich and Timpano are still nursing injuries and will probably only make it for Round 1. Without the likes of Zad and timpano in a 3-0 winning side, I wonder how butcher will put things together!

Zad will be back in 4 weeks roughly, Jacob in two. Even Yorke is no certain starter now.
