I know this has been done before but I think Melbourne has proved it could easily have a second team playing out of the new stadium. I think that this team needs to be brought in sooner rather than later in order to gain support before everyone is following Victory.

Not again.;)
If there is to be a 2nd team, it can wait and find it's own stadium.

I don't want to share the stadium with another football team (I don't mind the rugby, but I don't want another team in our comp)

depending on what happens to SM, I can see BJS being a good home for another team

but I don't think there is going to be another team in Melb for yonks

sorry if this thread has already been started

just wanted to guage everyone's thoughts on a second melbourne-based a-league team? outgoing FFA CEO jonn o’neill has flagged it as a long-term goal of having second teams in Melbourne and Sydney. I wonder if you guys thought it necessary and if anybody would actually support it?

On the one hand you can see his point because in the long term our stadium will only hold 20,000 and at the current growth rates there certainly is potential for a second team. Plus it will also bring to the a-league the conspicuously absent concept of a local derby (well, a true local derby at least).

But IMO I just can’t see a need for it. Methinks in the long term that MVFC will be well established in this town and a new team will struggle for support. Otherwise we’ll end up with a West Coast Eagles / Freo Dockers situation where one club is dominant because they’ve been around for longer and only a few oddballs will support the new team. Victory is ours

Thoughts?

It would depend on what the new franchise bought to the table. I'd probably buy memberships for both clubs because at the end of the day football needs to be the winner.

But I would lvoe to see a rivalry between two Melbourne clubs. A bit of added spice to the competition I think.

If the top 6 FFV clubs got together and sorted a consortium then that may be the way to go. But that would involve putting ethnic rivalries aside and working together. It would be interesting though.

If the FFA know what they are doing they wont create another Melbourne team for atleast 5 years.

Won't happen for a while.

Victory have a five year licence without immediate competition remember.

Victory fans pouring out of a new stadium= time to CONSIDER a new tean

And I mean new, not a VPL club.

i think youve hit nail on the head there.......whilst we all know there are still a lot of disgruntled supporters around of South and the Knights etc.......who refuse to support the new league. If the FFV could work together and be a big part of that second team somehow, maybe thats a way of bringing some of these people back.....and not necessarily draining as much of the current Victory support base. HOWEVER it has to be done whereby any ethnicity is not brought to the table which im sure the FFA will make sure of.
BUT not for a while down the track...it will happen eventually but not just yet

At the moment I dont see the need for another Melbourne club.
Perhaps Frankston, Geelong or a Dandenong team !!!!!

I still dont see the point of it.
Better of the FFA bring in Canberra, Tassie, Wollongong, Townsville etc before introducing a 2nd Melb team.

yeah it seems the only way to go about it would be to create an a-league team based on a VPL team - the template for this being the creation of port power from the port magpies ion the afl.

but the problem is that it would return to the old ethnic rivalries, adn to get away from that was why we started the a-league in the first place

Unless Melbourne Victory are so big and so strong they sell out every week and never lose i don't want to see another team in Melbourne. I could accept another team in Victoria but not Melbourne.

the only way a new club in suburban melbourne will succeed is if it directly contrasts the victory on a few policies. specifically, not being family friendly. full strength beer, flares, ultras, profanities - a real "boys" club.

another "victory" style team won't work, it'll just dilute the supporter pool for both teams.

I was a supporter for expansion but this weekend I changed my mind. The truly woeful embarrassing crowds (despite shocking weather) tittering on empty stadiums in 2 matches is proof that whilst the big 4 clubs of MVFC, QRFC, AUFC and SFC have a nice future ahead of them the other 4 A-League clubs have a long way to go before being able to stand on their own. Introducing new clubs into a competition where half the sides are little more than cannon fodder is insane. No expansion should occur for many a year.

The fact that the crowds this week/start of season 2 have been so poor elsewhere and so good in Melbourne indicates that we need another team in Melbourne to

A) Dilute the power base within the big cities - ending up with a couple of powerful clubs performing better both on and off the field.

B) Prop up the league - These low crowds can't be maintained within a full-time profesisonal league in order to survive. A second Melb side would have tripled NZ crowd, no doubt about that in my mind.

Note: These views are in the best interests of football and not necessaily that of MVFC. However a derby would be excellent for MV and Football in Victoria.

The point of my thread is that this needs to be done sooner rather than later, before the Victorian supporter base is entirely snapped up by MVFC.

VPL teams aside, the smartest place to base a new team would be in the Dandynong (sp?) area. The population there is huge and only getting bigger, like they've done in the NBL with the Southern Dragons.

There are soooo many places in Australia that COULD be given a chance to get involved in the A-League, would love to see other places given a chance before we get a second team.

We have strong VPL teams here, that should fill all our requirements for local football needs, only thing lacking in the A-League is a local derby.....

Geelong is an obvious option within Vic, but then there's all the other places mentioned previously and in the past. I'd add Darwin to that list, I'd LOVE to see a team come out of Darwin they've got a great mix of people up there, lots of Asian ex-pats and large Aboriginal communities. Also Alice Springs, Rockhampton, Cairns (Cairns, Townsville and Darwin have roughly the same population...)
