That Hill was so quickly given the "voice of" title that usually only comes after years in the business has something to do with his crisp, economical and not-too-hysterical style. But, for a still Anglophile audience, it is also because he is English. Somehow, listening to soccer with Australian - and, on ESPN, American - commentators can seem almost vulgar. A bit like watching Brideshead Revisited with a punk rock sound track.

As much as I love our acccent, there is fomething that is still not right when commentating football. I suppose it is the years of watching EPL that has done this.

Paul Williams is/was probably the best Australian football commentator, although he had a slightly english accent.

I am so used to the English accent that it has become 'the sound of football' for me, and it does sound a bit weird to hear Strine
and Hill has a particularly sexy accent
but there is another interesting difference between English and Oz commentators
the English have long silences
they just name the players one after another for long stretches
with a bit of inflection to render the level of excitement
and gaps in between
the Australians tend to talk all the time
they use a lot more sentences
and give more descriptive detail
and sometimes rabbit on

Yeh Simon Hill and the other Brits are great. Football sounds British why muck around with it.

Yeah aussie sports seem to need a team of 2-3 people talking constantly, as though the sport itslef wasn't exciting enough.
We need to go to one person commentary (like during the WC). As aussie could do it, if they just chilled out and spoke about the game (not speculating about what players were thinking etc)

I tend to do that. This may sound a bit sad but I commentate the games when I play Fifa or Pro Evo on Xbox and my voice goes slightly english on most words.
Don't worry, the replacement for Robbie Slater is right here :)
