I must be dreaming. I could have sworn that I heard the 4 Diegos talking about Brazil's own Romario potentially joining the a-league!!! I think Adelaide was the local team mentioned...

Did anyone else catch this or known more info?

He's about 40 years old this now... anyone up to date with his performance? (check wiki, - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romario he's playing for Sutton)

They talked a bit about this on Fox Sports as well, but just said Adelaide were in negotiations to play him as a guest player.

What the devil!?!? (To put it in Stewie Griffin's words)

Well, this guy will be a hit wherever he goes. Phenomenal goalscoring record. In the Brazilian Premier League scored 23 in 31 with Vasco da Gama. With Miami in the American Second League scored 19 in 23. He'll score goals, that's for sure.

He's a superstar and crowds would come for him. Now, Simon Hill can correctly call one player for Adelaide a "Brazilian International" after branding Fernando Rech with that tag for a while.

I heard them say that during commentary on last night's game - for a four game guest spot they said.
Good PR move, I reckon. I'm sure people would turn out for the celebrity sighting.

He would be great for the league, and although he wouldn't run (he didn't during his prime either)those 23 goals in 31 games for Vasco were only a year or so ago

He would be an absolute gun in the A-league.

FUCKING STUPID!!! he's too old
Whats the point of getting some old bloke just because in his day he was a star, at least dwight yorke was at an age were he could still play at a top level.

He might be coming as a guest player. he scored 23 goals in 31 matches not to long ago. Just because he is 40 doesn't mean he has nothing to offer. Getting old guys who have experience will do the world of good to for the younger players coming through the ranks.

Mate, if you didn't understand, he scored 23 goals in 31 games in the last year or two for Vasco....thats almost more than Claudinho can boast for his entire career in Brazil.

so what, that doesn't mean he can translat well into the a-leauge where it is a lot more about speed and strength

That is a fair point, but for example he would only have to shuffle slightly to get hacked down in the area in the A-League...the referees are trigger happy and the players can be rash to say the least

This would be enough to warrant his inclusion, while he should draw the crowds even if it were to merely trudge around...he would be the most renowned player to have stepped on the domestic football field for the last 15 years

I can just imagine the headlines now - "Vicious tackle from Muscat kills Romario. Brazilians mourn his death."

I agree it makes the league look like a joke.

But if we have guests with the option of signing i.e Carbone it's a good thing.

i can see the use of guest players if you are trying to scout a player but it's a joke if a team is just trying to get a former star into their team

You think there'd be an 'intimidation' factor? I mean, shit, this guy IS a legend. "The Romario"

There is no point in all of this. Sign some young Aussie kids who are based in Europe's lesser known leagues/clubs.

If this is true, i am thouroughly pissed off!!

Why bring in washed up old hacks, who only want to come for some extra cash and a good lifestyle, when you have talented young local players (ie Djite), on your short-term list. I say do away with Romario and sign Djite on a long term contract.

age means nothing here. dont be fooled by the calendar

Oh.. woopty f ar k en do - 1 guest player of huge status for each team - what a crime - what teriible promotion of our league - how sad our young players have to play alongside these experienced veteran superstars. And f ar k you mate. Romario and anyone like him would be fantastic, so long as it's 1-2 per team. No worries.

A guy like ROmario would put bums on seats......he's a name thats well known....and the thing is like weve seen when people go to see their first games live....they ENJOY the experience and want more. If it takes a Romario or a Carbone to get people to go and experience the A-League so be it...........im sure once they experience the atmosphere and standard of the league more would come back than be turned away.

Looks like this one could be a goer. 19 goals in 21 games in the USL is pretty good, though its not a high level.

Romario: Fernando told me to come to Adelaide paradise
tribalfooball.com - September 20, 2006

Romario's Dad has confirmed the veteran striker has accepted a move to Adelaide United.

"He wants to accept the deal," Edevair said on Brazilian TV last night. "He's very keen to play in Australia's top league and wants Adelaide to help him get closer to his 1000th goal."

His manager Luisinho Moraes has been in contact with United's Brazilian import Fernando.

"Fernando told me to come to paradise and not to think twice about coming to Adelaide," Romario said on Brazilian radio TUPI yesterday.

"I only hear good things about Adelaide," Romario said.

The 1994 World Cup winner has been following United's A-League plight.

"I heard that Adelaide is in third place and six points behind Melbourne," Romario said.

"South Melbourne (soccer club) is an old friend.

"South Melbourne played my Vasca da Gama at the Maracana in the (FIFA 2000) World Club championship. I didn't score that day but I remember that they were a very hard team."

Romario said that Australia had captured his imagination with the striker possibly looking at ending his career Down Under.

"Kangaroos and sharks," he said. "I want to see them and that's another good reason not to retire."

Brazil coach Dunga has backed his old teammate's move.

"He's keen to go to Australia," Dunga said.

"He's always a surprise.

"So why not show off the real Brazilian way in Australia?"

Hope he plays the rest of his career for Adelaide, I'd prefer that then to him simply coming a guest player.

Hes only coming becuase of Romario 1000.

He is on 984 goals at the moment and wants to score 1000 goals by the end of his career. In other words he is playing for himself and not Adelaide.

Waste of money, better off investing in one of our U-20's who supprisingly enough don't even have a club to play for.

i remember that game, South put up such a good fight and it took a 30 meter wonder strike and a goal in the last couple of minutes to beat us. good to see we left an impression of one of the greats of world soccer

He'd be worth every cent to watch in person.

A God-like footballer. One of the very best.

He is not too old: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romario

Look at his last 3 seasons, still a machine.

Are you a bit dim? Romario didnt say he respected the South board for their administration of the club - he respected the 11 players who he was up against on the pitch.

As much as I'm against washed up guest players, Romario is truly a legend and it's a privelige that he could grace the a-league.

He was playing in the Brazilian League only a year ago, I wouldn't write him off.

Rivaldo plays in Greece for Olympiakos, ROMARIO says "south melbourne" so i guess all could take credit...if the board hadnt turned the club professional in that time Romario would NOT know who South is, yes he is praising the men on the park but the club had a big part to do with everything......and then the nightmare started lol.
