Seriously what the fuck is wrong with people enjoying the VPL. You idiots seem to have this idea that the A-league all off the sudden is going to be a standard like never seen before. All these players that you are trying to get back have been in the NSL and we have seen them play. They are not going to be better now at 30+. We saw Zdrilic, Corica and muscat when they were young up and coming players not old dads heading for retirement.

Exactly! What's the problem? If it's that the Knights and South Melb are not in the national league anymore, do you really think the attitudes shown here (stirring up trouble, supposedly planning protests and fights, etc at the first Victory game, etc) will help you to get your team back to the top level in a few years time when there may be a second Melbourne licence available??

As long as this "A-League" exists, neither South nor Knights, nor any other ethnic club will be able to get back to the 'top level' as you call it. Theoretically it may be the top league in this country, but only time will tell!

In 5 years time when they're looking for more teams to be included in the A-League and they need another team from Melbourne, South Melbourne would be a contender.

I think South had gone a reasonable way towards broadening their support base - certainly they have done a much better job than the Knights. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with South being the second Melbourne club in the A-League. They are arguably the most sucessful club in the country, after all.

Yes, that is their background, but I don't know how strong the Dutch influence is these days.
To be honest, I see Queensland as the biggest problem for the A-League. The Lions have a lot of members, but they are members of the licensed club, like being a member at your local RSL or Leagues club. In the wider football community it seems that the Lions are not well liked at all up there. All of the Strikers fans that I know are going to give the A-League a miss rather than support the Lions.

That is a problem that we have to face.
This league needs our support from everyone.
Hopefully the quality will b e good enough that everyone will support at the start...
Maybe later when more teams are added these supporters can go to their older clubs...
But for now we all have to support the league until it finds its feet.

Uhm no, reason being that my only interest is south melbourne soccer club in terms of supporting in this country.
However if i didnt follow a team then who knows, the purpose of the victory is to bring in all the fans who were afraid to support an ethnic club or used that as an excuse to not attend n.s.l matches, thats why it will be interesting to see what kind of following this side gets, no point trying to convert hellas and knights fans, go around the forums and you always hear people saying how they felt alienated previously, the aim is to get those people to the ground, my honest opinion is that their wont be enough of them, and a lot of them dont even like the sport, one way or another a lot of questions will be answered over the next 12 months.

This post illustrates why South Melbourne had limited potential to expand its supporter base and, ultimately, points to a major reason for the failure of the old NSL. i.e. no scope for growth.
People on this forum keep saying things like "Oh, where have you been? You're a just a plastic football fan. an extract from Ross Solly's book "Shoot Out"
this is from the taskforce, headed by lowy's long-time soccer friend Andrew Kemeny.
"'The NSL has proven to be remarkably resilient, although this largely appears to be as a result of the commitment and passion of club members and benefactors rather than through successful club business models', the report stated."
"Kemeny's group noted a big difference between soccer's administration and the way Australia's more successful football codes were managed. In soccer there was no money coming from the sport's governing body or league administration to the clubs; rather the money was heading in the opposite direction - from the struggling clubs to the NSL to help cover its operating expenses."
i just find it irritating that clubs like souths and knights are singled out as if they brought the league and the game to its knees. if anything they stuck by the game while others came in expecting to make their money and jumped ship once things got tough.

No they just don't give a shit about Australian Football. They showed that with Carlton and the Turkey game. Come world cup qualifiers or EPl yeah everyone loves it.
FFS Zim, I was at the Turkey game and it wasn't half as bad as you make out.
In fact I think it was a positive sign, near on 30,000 ppl forking out a hundred bucks a pop to watch Australia's second team run around in a game that meant nothing, on a Monday work night.
I agree that 2/3rds of the fans were Turkish supporters, but that still leaves 8 -10,000 Aussie supporters that showed up!. Have an AFL (Non- Grand Final) game - charge ppl $70 - $100 on a weeknight and see how many you get to turn up.
Put Kewell, Vidukes, Cahill etc in a game on a Saturday night ($35 - $50), perhaps against Irag in March and you will get 50,000+. Ppl aren't going to pay top dollar for second rate stuff.
Fark they got 20,000 to watch the Solomans in a dead rubber, with a significantly understrength team when they got the pricing right.
Now I will be honest and say that I didn't follow the NSL, never went to a game, occasingly had a glance through the paper - but that would be about it. I have gone to watch the National team play many times and follow a local team, aswell as a subscriber to Foxtell.
Judging by NSL match attendances as compared with T.V audiences for football I think it would be fair to say many fit my category.
I often hear about Carlton this and Carlton that. BUt wasn't Carlton one of 'four Melbourne teams' playing in the NSL at the time, again please correct if wrong - apart from being alligned to one football club in a city that has 10 (Inc Geelong). You also didn't have anywhere near the concentration of support both 'corporate' and 'people that want to watch football at the highest level'. Carlton had no where near the money Victory is likely to have, and a lot of negative perceptions existed about the NSL in the broader community and the media.
Didn't Carlton start in 1997, correct me if I am wrong, so you have had 7 or 8 years of football growth (probably the fastest growing sport in Australia).
A lot of ppl are preaching negativity, but I know there are many more out there like me, not just Anglo- Australians but many ethnic Australians that will follow the Victory and haven't supported the NSL in the past.
I am not bashing the NSL - just giving a different perspective. The A-League will have to overcome many problems that the NSL did - player drain, etc.
But I think the 2000 figure brandied about is being ridiculously negative by some. What I think is of more concern is whether 8,000 - 10,000 will be enough long-term to sustain a team. They will have to get more than this !aswell as plenty of corporate support, overcome a hostile AFL driven media, and attract new audiences.
The A-Leagues future is far from assured as there are many obstacles to overcome, no-one begrudes the NSL, its teams and the communities that have supported them and Australian football. But the constant bitterness can be annoying.

I might have said 2000 but I think 300 is getable with a winning team. Theres a differnece between 8000 Aussies paying top dollar to watch a still very good socceroos and 3rd placed Turkey and 8000 ppl watching sarkies and Rody Vargas playing along side a 40 year old Muscat. the 3000 mark is way more realistic then 25 000. I don't think Victory can do any better or worse then storm. I would stay be extremly pleased with an average of 6546 after year 3. An average of 6545 would be a total disaster.
I don't think 90 000 people watching the socceroos lose again will filter down to the local game as it hasnt for the last 30 years.
Player drain will never be sorted. Any player that is worthy of the socceroo shirt won't be here for long.

Anyone who did not follow the NSL properly in the years 89-97 has no right to comment on annoying bitterness. You have no idea of the bullshit our club went through, the $200 000 fine we copped because our fans ran on to the field to celebrate a GF win (causing no violent trouble). That fine being one of many. Threats of fines going right up until the final match against Syd United because of the ads in the match day program. Life was purposfully made difficult to help us come down, It was not enough to let us do that on our own.

I forgot to mention those pitch invasions had happened before with no punishment, the commentators were saying "how great is this etc". The David Hill decided it was worse then murder. Syd United came to thier knees when for some bizzare reason Hill forced them to play at Paramatta stadium for no apparant reason. No upgrade was made and they were let back as Hill fucked off. Personal comments made by hill while being a so called guest also added fuel to the fire.

What's wrong with the clubs founding member chanting hellas. What about people that were born losers, I'm sure they wont appreciate the Victory chants from the 2000 loyal supporters
:D LOL. Good one!
There's nothing wrong with people chanting Hellas in itself. They can do what they like. All I'm saying is that if they wanted to encourage people who do not have a Greek background to follow the club and grow their supporter base, that may not be the best way. ;)

If I went to a Victory game & your fans started chanting Aussie things like waltzing matilda, aussie aussie oy oy oy, eureka stuff, communist chants I'd feel alienated, fell left out, not welcome......
It's probably not a great idea to reply, as I may encourage you. However, why would anyone sing Waltzing Matilda or Aussie-Aussie-Aussie-oy-oy-oy at a Victory game as the opposition side would also be an Australian team (unless it's Kungz FC)? What you are saying does not really make sense, because it wouldn't actually happen. If people chanted these things at a Socceroos match however, would you still feel alienated, left out or not welcome? I assume that you are an Australian citizen, attending a game in Australia??
I don't know if there are any Eureka chants, but I wouldn't be chanting them anyway, and I would also think it would be a bit weird. Communist chants?? I don't think so, mate. Even in communist countries, football matches are the only places people can and do yell anti-communist things and I really don't think they'd be all that keen on their government to literally sing their praises!
Australia is a democracy and we're all basically capitalists, so I wouldn't lose any sleep if I were you! ;)

Well you only sing when you're winning so singing at Victory games will not be a problem

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends (gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever friendship never ends,
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give,
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is.
What do you think about that now you know how I feel,
Say you can handle my love are you for real,
I won't be hasty, I'll give you a try
If you really bug me then I'll say goodbye.
