G'day all,
I haven't been following Australian Soccer at all in the past and was wondering if anyone could fill me in on how the APL will get me more involved. I've decided to back the Melbourne Victory team since I live 1hour away from Melbourne.
PS: Are there any Admin's around here coz this place is really getting out of line hehe

They have no money, no players, an untried coach and a shocking name. They also have no suitable home ground. If thats your cup of tea you have found a new home. :D

Sorry to disappoint you Zim Zum, but Victory are infact cashed up now, you are correct about the players though...
Untried coach you be thinking? I dont think he beat off the likes of Theodorakopoulos, Murno, Krncevic, etc for nothing. And back in the early 90's he coached Sunshine so the experience is there.
Shit name i will agree with you again, but hopefully it will change soon.
And by the home ground do you mean Telstra Dome or Olympic Park?

Yeah you have the capital this season barely. what about the next 5 seasons. Dome is to big. we all know you cant average 20 000 to break even. Olympic park you all hate it.

So Olympic Park is not a suitable home ground because we all hate it? That's what you just said.
Some of us think it is a suitable home ground, and me included, provided they give it a good facelift.

Wow! THE Sunshine? Did he win any games?
Merrick is a stooge who got the job because he is cheap and not ethnic,
That's the bottom line, cos AussieHool said so.
Victory is gonna be a poor team, but the anger of losing will only make it easier for me to gather blokes to beat up the interstate wankers after games, so I'm not too disappointed.
As long as we win off the park is all I care about.

Hey Zim Zum, why don't you bother telling us how old players like David Zdrilic is ? Or Ante Milicic? or other quality players who look like coming back like Joel Porter? Simon Colosimo?
This league isn't going to be a retirement league which is what you seem to think...

It is the same as the NSL, exact same, only difference ethnic backed clubs have been etnically cleansed by soccer dictatorship.

Well why don't you look at some of the team sheets, im sure you will be pleasantly surprised. And there is a few older players but so what, every league has players in their 30's even the Premier League, arguably the best competition in the world.
The league will be a better quality too. Only the better NSL players of last season as well as some foreigners and some foreign Aussies. Doesn't sound all that bad, and its still the first season, just wait till it gets bigger and better players want to start playing here.

Jebac, the competition standard will be better despite what you may think, and it can only get better in the years to come.
What do you base this on? I'm really interested to know.
You all claim that the A-League will be better than the NSL because the marketing is better.... Marketing will not improve the quality on the park for a loooooong time and by then, the league will have fallen apart anyway.
To get anywhere you need a substantial supporter base, and right now, you don't have it. And if you expect a significant percentage of South & Knights supporters to back Melb Victory you are living in a fantasy world!
semja
December 20th, 2004, 07:59 PM
hellas^girl,
Im basing that because there are better players playing in this new competition, thus it being a better standard.
And marketing goes a long way towards a better league. The NSL struggled to do this because clubs kept going under.
And just you watch the opening game of the season, there will be a supporter base there too....

Better players?? Such as? Victory doesn't even have ONE player yet, let alone a 'better' player. You're going to be left with the scraps that the other clubs have rejected.

Who knows whether Victory taking their time to sign firstly, a coach and then players is the right or wrong approach. You beleive we will be left with the scraps, but I ask you, the scraps of what? . Do you mean NSL players?
I think as this is a new venture only time will tell. I do know that the ASA has been impressed with the approach taken by the Melbourne VFC. They have been working hard on getting their structures in place and establishing the foundations to achieve longer term objectives.
I am only concerned about the game of football prospering in this country. It undoubtedly has the potential, but has fallen down somewhere. I don't know the right or wrong way for it to achieve its potential. What I will do though is allow the new administration of the game in this country the opportunity to try. They have certainly shown so far that they are taking a more corporate approach to the running of the game, and it seems to me to have taken a more professional approach to the packaging. ASA are under no illusions that they will get it right overnight, but I beleive they are on the right track.
Only time will tell. It would be great if you could come and watch and perhaps support, as I do not think it is conflict in that your hellas are not playing in the same league. This is not a derogatory comment in any way. Just the reality of the situation. I can understand your frustration of your proud and successful club being omitted from the new comp. Unfortunately something had to change, and this required clubs' being established who offered a broader appeal to new markets. This isn't a racist attitude, in my opinion. I realise that SM Hellas didn't have a policy inplace which specified that you must be greek to support the club, but it also didn't have great appeal to non-greeks. Many of the chants were spoken in greek and the smsc board has posts that are in greek. Maybe try and think about that from a non-greek perspective. Hellas is a great binder for the greek community in Melbourne and will continue to be with great support from people like yourself and lucan. Melbourne VFC is not here to stop that. Just something new to try an encourage people to support the beautiful game and feel apart of that.
I realise there will be arguments to my opinion, but it is just that, mu opinion. And as I said earlier I will be patient and give my support so that the game will prosper in this country. I mean I am so excited about it that I will be coming down to watch passionate local derbies at BJS, fi you will have me that is.

Hellas Girl there's alot decent players out there, more than people seem to realise.
And what difference does it make if Victory are behind. They're not even that far behind anyway. Clubs like Kingz have only signed 3 players and they only appointed their coach today aswell!
The advantage to signing no players to this point is that the coach can have a look at them before they're signed. He can create his own team rather that try to make do with players already there.

Gooners I appreciate your ability to view things from both sides of the coin.
What you need to understand is that South and Knights supporters feel that regardless of if they were able to raise the funds, they would never have been/ and will never be accepted into the A-League simply because of their ethnicity. No amount of marketing or convincing will be able to change opinions if the ethnics feel that they are being isolated, no one holds a grudge like an ethnic!
If it wasn't for clubs like ours, Victorian soccer would not be what it is today, and the A-League and now Melbourne Victory hasn't even acknowledged that.
Also, you were saying that South didn't totally appeal to non-Greeks, I understand that because we are now going through the same thing. Many Greeks/ Croatians/ Macedonians etc feel that Melb Victory does not appeal to ethnics. And if something doesn't change and the majority of 'ethnic' supporters continue to feel this animosity towards Victory than you will not prosper. Because as much as you all hate to admit it, Victorian soccer needs us, and is nothing without us.
And MelbFan the Knights' ground may not be 'state of the art', but at least they have one!

Forgive my ignorance, but I do not understand this. I agree Victorian soccer and the Melbourne VFC does need you. But I do not see how they are ostracising people of ethnic origins from supporting the club. In fact the people on this forum have in general been encouraging it. Granted we should have consulted you all before putting your local club banners onto the victory forum banner, but the reality is, that it was done to show unity and bind all the victorian clubs.
I ask you and all the other supporters to tell me what the Melb VFC should do to appeal to you. Remember that we do not want only greek or croatian secular supporters. We want everyone, and that is the aim of the club to appeal to a broadbase supporter network. I believe in your support for your heritage, but also believe that as citizens of Victoria we should also support them. I originally come from ##### and still love my homeland, but I have also fallen in love with this country and the wonderful opportunities it offers. Our heritage is important, but so is living in the now as well as the future.
I think it is perhaps a little bit early to make a decision on what the club offers to everyone. I really hope that they offer an incentive sytem on ticket sales to all Victorian clubs. This will ensure that Victory get good crowds whilst also providing much needed funds to our clubs at the grassroots level. The aim of this league is to grow the sport of football in this country. Thanks to you guys for getting it this far but, as alot of the supporters of local clubs have said, the old administration were starting to take the game backwards. I support the game of football first and then Australia after. I will never forget what the 'ethnics' have done for the game in our country. Just look at the amazing melting pot that is our national team. Croations, Greeks, Italians, Dutch, British etc. I love hearing "Viduka passes the ball to Bresciano who provides a neat little backheel into the path of Kewell who......"
Look forward to your thoughts, criticisms and ideas

Pull your head in. This kind of comment does nothing to help the situation. The trolling on this forum has nothing to do with their ethnicity - it is because they are trolls.
What the hell is this thing called an 'ethnic' anyway? We all have some kind of heritage that is not Australian, be it Croatian, English, Greek or Vietnamese. Some people on this forum seem to be using the term 'ethnic' as some sort of acceptable way to call someone a wog.

Well, you need to get out more, Jebac. I know plenty of us skips who are into soccer. The school I went to (a while ago now I have to admit) always had big soccer games going on at lunch time and it was all the skips who were playing.
Theres a difference between playing soccer or watchign the EPL on fox then giving up summer nights to watch a low level of a-league soccer with a bunch of 38 yr old marquee players.
I don't think this can dramatically change over one seaosn just becasue the 'pond' has been drained and given a coat of expensive dulux paint.

The only thing that I cant think of in reply to the "same stuff, different wrapper" tag of the A-League is that the fewer teams will mean that the talent is more concentrated. Lesser NSL players are finding themselves in the state leagues which improves their quality, while the better players have more competition within their new clubs squads for a first team place. Ultimately, this will improve the quality slightly of the league, but more importantly, it will improve the game throughout all the tiers of our competitions. Hopefully, given time, the league will flourish in terms of quality and excitement, and for that matter the same thing happening to the VPL and other state competitions.
