"The problem is nothing to do with the NZFC red tape. It's FIFA red tape.

We have a nationwide national league that is in it's third season, played during the Summer like the A-League. Beneath that there is a regional series of Leagues, I would suggest the equivalent of Australian State Leagues. In fact NZ domestic football is about 12 months ahead of the Australian model, albeit with an ostensibly amateur competition. There is no fragmentation at all.

The problem is that the Knights are an Australian club, affiliated to the FFA with the FFA holding player registrations. The NZFC clubs are New Zealand clubs. If you move between them you make an international transfer and FIFA say you are only allowed one per season. These are the same rules that would impact an Australian player moving to Europe for 4 weeks.

This means there is no way you can move back to domestic football for up to 8 months. Add to this the FIFA rules differences for stepping between an officially amateur New Zealand national league and a professional Australian league and back again and it becomes a nightmare.

This is why the Knights currently sign Australians on 4 week deals, if they then release the Australian they can play again the next week somewhere, New Zealand based players would be expected to put their football career on hold for 8 months or more and understandably many won't willingly take that risk.

If people want a useful campaign then petition FIFA to change those rules, or the FFA to remove the fact that one Australian club isn't allowed to play in the Asians Champions League even if they qualify. "

after having a chat on the nz forum i can see why they are doing so badly, all the ozzi teams have an unfair advantage.

That is a great point. I never thought of that. I think they will go in the next 3 years once other Australian Areas jump on board the A-league there is no room for a New Zealand team in an OZ comp.

i hope the league can come to some sort of solution to this problem. from what i can see there is great reason for nz to be in the league its just not a level playing field. we dont hear to much on this topic.

i agree...i think NZ can only suceed in the a league if they were a NZ club not an australian club in Nz as they are currently....having said that i think its important that we have a new zealand club in the a league, b/c the best nz players are always going to come and play in the a league and take the spot of a young australian player, so we may as well have a team there to try give the opportunity to young nz players and try and make marketing money out of another 3 million ppl into our league...the solution (although will never happen and is alittle left field) is to get NZ into the asian confederation so that they can have a NZ club in the A league...and the countries can intergrate properly in this league...

hopefully this would be solved if and when a reserve league was established. basically it would give NZ a chance to sign a team of reserve NZ players that if they improve can then challenge for positions and give the NZ fans some home grown players to follow and get behind.

form what i am hearing is that its going to be a youth league not a reserve team, with the option to add 3 or 4 over age players
