View Full Version : A-League's Johnny Warren Medal is a shamble!

As we all know, the player of the year award, the Johnny Warren Medal, is given to "the player of the year". But we all know that's bullcrap. Bobby Despotovski my arse! I thought Muscat or even Beauchamp were better. But since we have to copy the GayFL's crappy rules for a game where suspension is almost guaranteed every round for stuff even pissier than the GayFL stuff. Now, some of the players that I thought would win the coveted medal won't win such as Muscat, Vargas or Fred (and does Leijer count also because he was suspended for a week?) because they all got suspended this year. Vargas touched a ball with his hand and now he can't be the best player in the league. I know this should go in the Australian Football discussionm but I feel the Victory boys should win something this year, and one of them deserve to win the best player of the year award.

it's especially ridiculous to not allow them to win it if they get suspended cause of too many yellow cards

I did only say he was "suspended". Didn't say red. But yes, he is ineligible.

I bet Carney or some shit will win it.

If Burns can keep up his current form for the rest of the season I dare say he might be an outsider...

Alssopp would have to be leading at the moment. Has it been confirmed that 5 yellows makes u ineligable? Did heffernen get suspsended last season? he must of been hard of non winning if not as he was equal top scorer for the league as a defender i thought.

Someone told me it was only for a straight red. so not good for Vargas but everyone else i would think will be fine. although i wouldn't hold to much hope for Fred, i'd say a 3 week suspension is far worse than a straight red.

Allsopp should win it. Beauchamp is rubbish.

Yeah, but I did think he had an alright season last year. Better than that old fart Bobby Despotovski.

It's voted by the players, so of course certain players will never get it. It's not "best player" it's "best player who's also popular". That's why Bobby D got it last year, and Muscat never will.

Matt Carroll.

Johnny Warren would be spinning in his grave the way his award works. :(

Matt Carroll.

Matt Carroll???

Elaborate.

Matt Carroll has sfa idea about the game, and is trying to implement all sorts of crappy, gimmicky ideas into the game that have been adapted from other Australian and American sports competitions.

So I'd pin the blame on him and his cronies for adapting a system that is almost identical to the AFLPA player of the year award, with a bit of a mix of Brownlow in the fact that if they're suspended, they're rubbed out.

exactly what are you guys going on about isn't just if you get a straight red card.

Well that's shit.

And even if it is only for a straight red, don't you realise Melbourne seem to get alot of those in their short history.

I also don't see why the A-League says that all the big stars will be at the games, when half the team is suspended due to card-happy refs! :p

You need a straight red to be ineligable. Thats what I heard anyway. So Leijer and Muscat are still ok but Vargas isn't. Anyway they all know the rules. If you want to be player of the season don't get red cards. Bobby D had an awesome season last year as well.

Victory Storm
November 10th, 2006, 09:05 PM
I'll admit Bobby D did have a good season last year, but some would say other players who got red cards had better seasons.

However, I reckon Vargas would've won this year if not for the handball.

Sorry what is the issue here? Has the award already been given out? No. What to stop Allsopp winning it? or Archie? Or any of our other players who havent been given a red.

Some people on this board are such fuckin drama queens.
