Fernando eyes second spot

Melbourne Victory's 12-point lead at the top of the A-League table has Adelaide United all-but conceding the Premiership to their Victorian rival.

While coach John Kosmina on Friday insisted the Victory might still be caught with some help from other clubs, United's Brazilian aggressor Fernando said his sights would be on shoring up second spot for the finals.

"To be honest with you I think we have to aim for second spot now; I'm not saying we have to give up anything but Melbourne is a solid team, they've been playing really well and now they're 12 points ahead so it's going to be hard to catch them," Fernando said on Friday.

"I think we have to aim for second spot and then have a chance in the play-offs to have a second chance and bring the grand final here to Hindmarsh."

"We're not going to worry too much about Melbourne, we just need to worry about our game, and if we keep playing like this we're going to make the grand final."

Kosmina said the club would set small goals over the next few weeks and without worrying about where it sat in relation to the Victory.

"You can't say we want to catch Melbourne, it's not an unrealistic goal, but the goals you've got to set have got to be reasonably achievable," he said.

"At the moment they're 12 points clear of us, we've got a game in hand, but what we've got to look at is we want to beat Queensland, then we want to beat Sydney."

"If we can keep winning maybe someone else will do us a favour, I don't think you should ever focus on second but we've got to focus on winning."

First up for United is its visit to a Queensland Roar side wrestling with the dissatisfaction of an ignominious loss to New Zealand.

"They had a fantastic start and for the last few games they haven't played really well and the results didn't happen so I think they have a lot of pressure," Fernando said.

"Everyone over there is expecting them to win the game, but they know it's always hard to play against us and we're going there comfortable."

TBH i would rather we avoid adelaide in finals. they're the only team negative and cheap enough to upset us with anti-football.

We were unlucky when we played them at Telstra Dome, we will fuck them up next time.

Adelaide are one team which has the wood over us so i'd rather avoid them, saying that, they failed miserably last finals series so maybe we could continue a trend for them :D

is it just me or is every team we play now just trying to defend and go for the draw? i mean last nite perth never looked like they wanted to score.

It's not just you. ;) I hate to make the comparsion with Chelsea because everyone hates them, :p but you've seen over 2 or 3 season ago when teams as Jose would call it "park the bus infront of goals". We are good enough to make teams beileve that a draw againt us is a good result.

i reckon QLD would be the only team that is willing to attack us.
That's cos their coach is off his nut.

You guys sure have short memories, CCM came out and scored 3 against us in 25 minutes two weeks, from memory sydney, roar and the jets all played attacking football against us but were just outclassed. one team, totally disadvantaged by the recent fixtures and injuries, "parked the bus" against us.
Teams will attempt to smother us defensivly, theres no question about that, but most teams in the A-league are attacking minded and will try to knock us off.

The defending champions are BACK... 2nd position is Sydney's. The home/away final series 1st v 2nd will be awesome. For the good of Football in Australia let's all hope Adelaide do not finish 2nd otherwise the chance remains that the Grand Final could be played in a sardine can called Hindmarsh. Sydney offers minimum of 42,000 at Aussie (or 82,000 at Telstra) and Melbourne offers 52,000 at Docklands and 95,000+ at G.

2nd spot to Adelaide is good enough to them and the best they can aim for

Dude wtf?! All you Sydney FC fans are so stupid.. You beat NZ, so fucking what?!?! We beat em by 4-0 in NZ, I watched the Sydney VS NZ replay today and you barely dominated at all.. And i wouldn't be talking about getting 82,000 at Telstra when you can't even get 10,000 thousand at Aussie. I think Adelaide and Melbourne are far better than Sydney and they will be in the grandfinal.

lol, lol and.... lol. You earned 3 points just for showing up. Not really something to be basing the claim that the drought is over on.
