I should have fouled Grosso
By Philip Micallef
November 12, 2006 AUSTRALIA hero Marco Bresciano yesterday made public his inner torment over the Socceroos' disputed defeat to Italy in the World Cup.

"I could have stopped the penalty that killed us," Bresciano lamented.

"Just before Italy fullback Fabio Grosso was tackled by Lucas Neill, I had a chance to stop him in his tracks before he got away from me.

"It was my intention to foul him when I ran across towards him.

"But I thought I was closer to the penalty area than I actually was.

"In the heat of the moment I reckoned it would have been too dangerous to give away a free kick so close to the 18-yard box with only a few seconds left in the game."

It is history now that Italy was awarded a dodgy penalty for Neill's challenge on Grosso and Francesco Totti's spot kick sent the brave Socceroos crashing out of the World Cup, and the Azzurri went on to win the competition. It is one regret for Bresciano in a year he describes as "simply unforgettable".

"The goal against Uruguay, I got married, the World Cup, my wife Renee pregnant, the transfer to Palermo and now we're top of Serie A," he said.

"On a personal level it does not get any better but professionally it can. There is the Asian Cup coming up and another World Cup, which I would love to be part of."

Bresciano, who is expected to play for Australia in Tuesday's friendly with Ghana in London, said the Australia team had reached such a high level of expertise it should aim for the top in every tournament.

"Winning any competition is tough but we certainly have the capability to do something special in the Asian Cup next year," he said. "If the team stays together we should be very strong.

"Asia has some good sides, so proclaiming ourselves as favourites is a bit ambitious. But we certainly have a great chance of winning it.

"We'll give it our best shot. The last thing we want is to disappoint our fans, ourselves and our families."

Bresciano, 26, said he welcomed the news national coach Graham Arnold was to be given a chance to show his worth at the Asian Cup.

"I am sure all the boys would be happy for Graham," he said. "He has come a long way and he deserves a chance to show what he can do. He's got the support of the players, which is important."

Bresciano may not be a great scorer of goals but a scorer of great goals he certainly is. Which is not bad for a midfielder. "My favourite role is playing in the hole just behind the strikers," he said.

"I like to create space for myself and the strikers and have a crack at goal."

To his complete disbelief Bresciano, who brought the house down with a classy scissor-kick in the Asian Cup qualifying match against Bahrain in Sydney last month, actually lost his first-team place in the team soon after Guus Hiddink was named Socceroos coach in mid-2005.

"I must admit that I was concerned and the thought of losing my place on a more permanent basis did run through my mind," he said.

"There is always that bit of fear but in my most difficult period I was helped by my teammates' support.

"This is the strength of the Socceroos team. We've been together for so long now that everyone knows when someone is up or down.

"We support each other all the time. It's like a circle."

well I always thought Bresc should have done a little more to ward off Grossos Run....but its in the past now....although its interesting to read his comments.

It will be a thorn in my side forever. You simply don't get over losses like that, never.

Good that he has finally got it off his chest though.

I'm over it, was over it a long time ago. I feel no pain or any heartache or anything from the events there. I cannot look at Australia making a world cup and making the round of 16 without a huge smile coming onto my face. Uruguay and Iran are losses that are hard to get over, but they are nothing now! If we miss the next world cup, i will die :S
Bresc is a great player and its fantastic everything is coming together for him. I don't think the tagline "Bresciano may not be a great scorer of goals " fits though as from the WCQ against uruguay and before he scored a great amount of goals for the NT.

Only the bandwagoners get over it. This was like someone cheating in court to get custody of my baby.

Bresciano is a champ. Even though he was rubbish in the WC.

I thought to myself at the time that Bresciano let him through far too easily.

But, who knows? Italy could well have scored from the resulting free kick.

I'll get over it when we beat Italy and eliminate them from the world cup.

Actually no, I will not be over it even then. Every time Italy gets eliminated from the world cup or even Euro there will be a corner of my heart that will remember that penalty and will savour revenge.

Not that I ever liked the bunker, 0-0 unless we have to and then we win 1-0 mentality of the azzurri.

Dino Zoff was a champion other than that I hate watching the ultra-defensive bastards.

Sorry mate, but it would take a lot more than 3 games to change my mind. They subjected us to decades of horrible football.

Defense, defense, defense, Paolo Rossi steals a goal Italy win 1-0 gah!

Shows ur ignorance to call that team ultra defensive...........days of the catenaccio were gone long ago.

Yes they had awesome defenders but far from defensive.......4 strikers on field at numerous times during WC........and the fullbacks and a central defender scoring 4 crucial goals in the world cup.

In regard to the whole issue.......its happened......it hurt....but shit like that happened to other countries and it happens every week.

Time to move on i think and all ahead for the Asian CUP......Destiny 07!!

mate do you know your history.
In 1982 they beat the hot favourites Brazil 3-2!
then in the semi's 2-0 against Poland
and 3-1 in the final!!!!

thats 8 goals in three games!!!
and Rossi scored 6 of those goals!!!!

How can you even have the nerve to call people Bandwagoners because they have maturity to get over past events. Mate, we hurt as much as you did when we lost, and have been for all our previous disasters. Get over yourselves for one second yeh.

Sure and nobody ever forgets :) that is what rivalries are made of.

Do you think for example any Argentinian or Brazilian will ever forgive the Uruguayans for winning the first and third world cups? Even if it happend a long time before they were born people don't forget it.

Every time Austarlia beats Italy (and I'm hoping it happens often) the players and the fans will remember that game (conciously or unconciously).

I don't hate the Italian football team I just enjoy when they loose, from a personal point of view the game against australia only adds to many previous games, against Argentina in 1982 for example (although they did beat Brazil in that tournament abd that was good :) )

do people even know why 'Catenaccio' was invented?

It all came about when the famous Torino team died in the tragic plane crash.
That team had a number of Italian international's and therefore lost the heart of national team.
The only way the Italians thought they could compete , with such a depleted squad was to play a more defensive game and hit on the counter attack. This was due to the lack of quality players they had after the crash.

It continued for that period, but i dont think its as bad now as i used to be.

Are you serious mate?? maturity to get over past events??

You are an idiot mate, seriously, unless we beat italy and knock them out of the next wc i will take this to my grave. It depends on how the individual cares about something so much that he/her will forget it.

You obviously are over it because you care about other things in life,50% of my life is football and the socceroos have been MY home team all my life, i wont get over this, and i expect 'bandwagoners' too because they were only in it for the WC experience, nothing else.

I do know my history, and I did know you'll come back with this, I sort of walked into it knowingly.

The thing is, history is history and the subjective memories of a child are what they are.

It doesn't really matter what actually happen (in any case I much rather my team played in World cups the way Italy did and won, than that they played the way Holland plays world cups and lost).

In my mind though (the strange mind of a child fanatic) Rossi was a lucky bastard that was always in the right place at the right time, and I HATED the bastard for it.

Of course later on when I read the history and saw the videos I realised it wasn't quite like that, bloody Rossi was a genius. but it changes nothing I still dislike the Azzurri, its not about logic.

Asking the Australians to "forget and move on" is unfair, nobody ever forgets in football :) especially not a penalty in the 90th minute of an elimimnation game in a world cup :)

I tried to keep it civil, but shit are you for real? I'm over it because i see no reason to be bitter about the greatest footballing achievement this countries ever had! You might thin being bitter makes you a hardcare fan, but it does nothing. A team bet us, yeh it fucken sucked but its football. don't even attempt to degrade other peoples passion for our national team!
