I wasn't in favour of him getting the sack, but if it was his choice - fine.

Get ready for a bumpy ride to South America and beyond...

It's over

Farina's time is up
SBS

Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chairman Frank Lowy and CEO John O'Neill will hold a press conference in Sydney this afternoon at 5.15pm where they are expected to announce Frank Farina's tenure as Socceroos coach is over.

It is unclear if Farina has stepped down from the job after mounting pressure in recent months or if he has been fired.

Farina returned to Australia from Germany, following the disappointing 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup campaign, in which the Socceroos suffered losses to the host nation, Argentina and Tunisia.

He has been in charge of the national team since August 1999 and his current contract was due to expire at the end of the current campaign to qualify for the 2006 finals.

Last week in Germany, O'Neill said Farina would see out his contract but it appears as though that will not be the case.

A number of foreign coaches have been linked to the position as Australian national team coach but it remains to be seen if the FFA can lure a top quality coach at such a late and delicate stage of the World Cup qualifying process.

hehe heard it first from me a couple of hours ago in my other thread!!!!

great news for Australian Soccer it was been done before and we certainly would not have made it with Frank at the helms.

Looks even better on FFA behalf if he does step down because they can blame him for leaving them in the lurch ahhh that oneill is a smart fella.

It is now up 2 him to find the best replacement possible in the cir***stances. Australian Football continues to improve

I think it was more like resign or we will sack you - that's life in the fast lane.

Good that they did it sooner rather than later, appointing a coach say weeks before the world cup qualifying would have been a disaster

They are talking about it on SEN right now and you can ring and say your opinion.

He probably heard all the backlash from Australian supporters about him to. That would a played a part to, that the supporters not showing confidence in him to. Maybe Football Australia asked him to resign, so it would look better than being sacked, seeing as a lot of Australian players like him. There could have been a backlash from them.

You said it's in the wrong forum, then why the hell is it here? General Football Discussion is popular enough.

Who is a likely choice to be his replacement?

Does this mean we may actually play our best eleven i.e. okon or zelic and elrich? and a decent formation?

Because it's such MASSIVE news it's good for people to know as soon as possible. And seeing as though there were 25 people viewing this section at the time of the news it was necessary to make this post here.

Ron Smith is the care taker manager.

Yeah, okay.

What are Ron Smith's credential's?

He's the national technical manager - or something along those lines.

I heard Tony Vidmar is now player/coach

We need to lose the 4-4-2. Our defenders are not good enough for that line up

Frank Farina is GONE! Let’s Celebrate!!!

What a fabulous day! I personally have waited for this day since our (Australia not the f**ken Socceross as he still calls us) elimination from 2002. The last straw was against Argentina recently when we had to win the progress to the next round and the Idiot played a 4.5.1 formation for most of the game.

Now with Farina gone, next is Harry Kewell. He is a self serving snake only happy to play which it suits himself and not the country. Yes, yes he maybe injured but wasn’t Viduka and he still ran out to the pitch in previous games.

Nether the less, this is the second best (behind the new A-League) thing to happen for Football Australia is hopefully with the right coach, (who won’t take still from people like Harry Kewell) Australia should and will progress to the final 32 in Germany in 2006.

Rofl I havnt watched any of the games. Well the flat back 4 is what I mean anyway. Our defenders obviously are not good enough for that.

Haha, forced resignation....in other words, SACKED.

LOL @ Lowy saying it was not a resignation or a sacking. It was simply "bringing foward the date of termination"

I think our defenders are good enough its just they aren't being told to defend the right way. All other teams are tight across the back but we seem to have massive holes everywhere. I can't believe thats how Neill is told to defend at Blackburn, or Moore at Rangers and Gladbach etc. Farina is gone so we can see if our defenders can do the job with someone getting them to do the right thing.

I think it was time for him to go, past time, but I still sort of feel sorry for him because it was a bloody tough job and he hasn't had much managing experience.

They don't need Farina to tell them how to defend properly.

I can help a little.
My Mums Boyfriend used to coach the reserves of Ringwood City in the late 80's/early 90's (and was President in the late 90's).
He told me tonight that Ron Smith was technical director back in his days.
So he has obviously held his position for a fair while

Or Bubs (Coaches baby - coaches always love me cause I have good work rate at training)
Or Paddles (the nickname given to me by my footy mates cause they think I look like the Paddle Pop Lion)
Special mention to Benroma for his efforts of Shag and Scarecrow.
I don't mind them :)
