I'm not sure if anyone else has posted this yet. This seems a bit bizarre to me, but the Kingz are going to be rebranded as the 'New Zealand Knights'.

Reaction from Melbourne Knights fans??
What happens if Melb Knights are re-admitted one day? Is there a shortage of nicknames going around that NZ had to use one that applied to a team they were playing against in their most recent competition? I am surprised that the FFA are allowing it actually. Truly weird.

I'm surprised with the name selection too ... but it's farken better than KINGZ!!!!
I don't see a problem with it however. It's not as if Melbourne Knights owns a monopoly on the nickname 'Knights' do they??

No, not at all, but you'd think they could have chosen a name that wasn't used by another team in the old NSL. Of all the names they could have used, they pick one from a team they used to play against. Just seems silly, but hey, that's just me.
Here's their new logo BTW.

I know the Kingz weren't very successful, but they could have used the Lord of the Rings NZ link in their marketing for the first season, i.e. "Return of the Kingz". Then again, I suppose Knights are a similar sort of thing.

I think a fair few people are going to be quite upset about this.

That's disappointing and very unoriginal. Also what's with 'New Zealand', couldn't they be Auckland. What happens if (god forbid) another NZ teams comes onboard. Should've given the spot to Canberra or Hobart.

Should have given the spot to Hobart???
That would be like giving Adelaide another team....
Since Tasmania has no team, does that mean they will go for us?
Or are they going to stay isolated in their 35 year dated past?

I saw a posting from a Tassie guy on another forum (maybe SoccerHut) and he was referring to "us" and "our" when talking about MVFC, so there's at least one bloke from down there jumping on board! The more the merrier, I say. The whole state of Tasmania can come along for the ride with us! :D

they deserve their own side to further promote the game in tassie.
as nz have their very own national league, i believe it was a mistake to have given them a spot in the a-league. nz benefits at our expense. i would much rather have a tasmanian side in well ahead of the kungz/khuntz.

It's a nice idea, but Tassie just don't have the population to sustain an A-League club. Canberra, Wollongong and the Gold Coast would all have a more valid claim than Tassie. What about a Tassie side in the VPL, like the VFL has?

my point is that the a-league should be for australian sides. it is after all the a-league and not the anz-league. granted a tassie may struggle but, i would much rather them (or a canberra, wollongong, even a morwell ;) in), rather than a side that that does nothing for australian football.

Yeah the name is definately unoriginal. I also agreee that their spot should have been given to either Canberra or a Tasmanian city like Hobart or even Launceston.
The FFA included the Central Coast in the competition (which was a good thing), as it does not have to compete with other sports at a national level. The only national competition, which there is any Tassie association is cricket, so if there was an A-League team in Tasmania it does not have to worry about the threat of other football sports.
I certainly think if they have the money, eventually Tasmania, ACT and even the NT should have a team each in the A-League to make the competition a trully national game, which is something the other sports in Australia have been unable to do.

Why are they called the Knights anyway?
Any significance to the area like Jets Mariners etc or just ripped off another team coz they couldnt be farked thinking up one of their own?

Well they have the Crusaders, Cheifs and Highlanders in Super 14, so I guess they're thinking that Knights would provide simillar marketing value.

I think it's just a nickname, nothing special or deep about it like the clubs you mentioned.
'Knights' is one of the better names in the A-League IMO.
