View Full Version : Biggest Transfer Flops of All Time

There are a lot of them but a few really stand out to me.
Tore Andre Flo - 12 million pounds to go from Chelsea to Rangers, and another huge fee to Sunderland. He was pretty awful for that sort of money.
Sergei Rebrov - 11 million pounds to Tottenham, scored a few goals, lazed around in the reserves for a season then went to Fenerbahce.
Diego Forlan - Not that he was that bad a player, but he was total scum at United. Absolute hack there, couldnt settle and cost them 7.5 million pounds plus wages. Now hes at Villareal and is doing quite well for himself. Pity his English adventure didnt go quite as well.
There are a heap out there. Who do you think are the worst flops of all time?

Here's a few
Carl Cort - 7.5 Million pounds from Wimbledon to Newcastle. Obviously he isn't playing for them anymore. Bobby Robson was rumoured to of made a mistake with this transfer.
Hernan Crespo - 16.75 Million pounds from Inter Milan to Chelsea. Alot of money for someone who only scored a few goals and looks likes only spending just the one season with them. But saying that Chelsea have got money to blow, with the help of their Sugar Daddy
Helder Postiga - 8 Million pounds from Porto to Tottenham. Postiga scored just the one goal for Tottenham and spent one season with them. He was sold for half that price after.
Adrian Mutu - 16.75 Million pounds from Parma to Chelsea. Scored 6 goals for them all up, then got busted for cocaine usage.
Locally I think Alex Moreira is the biggest transfer flop, he came to Adelaide City a few years back and he stank. It's because of players like him Melbourne Victory are afraid to venture out and sign foreign players.

Here's the tale of two goalkeepers:
Massimo Taibi:
-To Man Utd from Venezia: What was Ferguson thinking? Signed to replace Mark Bosnich. Who will ever forget those goals Taibi conceded against Southampton. Since that day he became known as the Blind Venetian and was transfered back to Italy at the end of that season.
-To AC Milan from Piacenza: Was signed after playing a well for Piacenza for a few seasons. Signed to be number one keeper at AC Milan, played a few games and made some crucial errors and was sold to Venezia at the end of that season.
Jens Lehmann:
-To AC Milan from Schalke 04: Signed by AC Milan to be the number one and again did not perform and was signed by Borussia Dortmund.
-To Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund: Signed by Arsenal last season, has been inconsistent and is currently out of favour.

Here are some more players:
-Pascal Cygan: to Arsenal from the French League. Cygan has already been discussed on other threads in this forum, need I say more.
-Darko Pancev: to Inter from Red Star Belgrade. While at Red Star was rated one of the best strikers in the world, however he moved to Inter and barely played a game and then just seemed to disappear after that.
-Diego Maradona: to Sevilla from Napoli. Sevilla was the club where Maradona made his first comeback. Played a few games in that season, then returned to Argentina.
-Dennis Bergkamp: to Inter from Ajax Amsterdam. Bergkamp struggled in Italy, however his transfer to Arsenal was just what he needed and has gone on to probably becoming a club legend at Arsenal.
-Hakan Sukur: to Torino from Galatasaray. Hakan's first stint in Italy lasted about 3 games with Torino, he got homesick and he also had some problems in his personal life and returned straight back to Galatasaray, but was successful there on his return.

Hey, Alex wasn't great, but he wasn't the biggest transfer flop. Surely that must be reserved for Nicola Berti. The former Azzurro signed on for one last paycheck at Northern Spirit and was utter crap.

Steve McMahon, Perth Glory's new head coach, was transferred from Liverpool to Man City for £900,000 (in 1991). He made 87 appearances for Manchester City in midfield and scored a single goal.

Houllier really didnt do much good with his signings.
All I can think of is Heskey.
But he has scored a bit recently for Birmingham I guess.
I also think Reyes at Arsenal for that amount of money could bite Wenger in the rear....

Four current Uruguayan internationals and they lose two Clasico's in a row, very poor form.
