"We want a one-year stay in which no one gets demoted," new South president George Donikian said yesterday.

"We think that's fair and reasonable and we're going to continue to pursue it.

"We're in a very unique situation where we've lost every player we had without getting any compensation and we're going into a competition where every club is after our blood.

"I'm not asking anyone to give us a 10-point start. But any good businessman covers every contingency, and as president it's my duty to pursue every eventuality.

"We have got great faith in our coach John Anastasiadis who is assembling a good group of youngsters who will be competitive.

"All we're asking is to be given a chance and we'll continue to broach the subject of a one-year moratorium at every opportunity."

I hope they are not serious, if the VSF consider doing this to appease South then they should all resign their positions as of now! South should not be treated any different to the likes of Heidelberg, Port Melbourne, Altona East and Sunshine; clubs that fell on hard times and went down.

The eyes and judgment of the soccer community are on you VSF, let us see how you respond to Donikians request!!!

Hah! If this happens its a joke!

What about the clubs that earn promotion? Are they gonna say to them *f**k off* for a year? No way.

My view is ... if you get relegated, whoever the hell you are, it's your problem. South shouldn't be receiving handouts like this and I'm a little disappointed they'd be seeking this.

It just goes to show the arrogance that South Melbourne have. As little as a month ago they said that they had players coming in from everywhere and back then Donikan had the attitude that South Melbourne could have done almost anything

The VSF has too many other clubs to consider for this to be allowed.

Actually, I'm pretty sure all that boasting (about players breaking down the doors to get a try out etc.) was done by outgoing president Peter Mitrakas, not the new man in charge, Donikian.

Sorry, your right there Lucan. But still the arrogance was there..

It's a fair request. South and the Knights were not looked after in the wake of the collapse of the NSL. They were forced to sit out football for a long time and had no income stream to pay players, therefore they had to handover all of their players to other clubs. Now, with only months before kick off they have to find an entire team from the leftovers and mould them into a competative force. Come on, that's not very fair.

If they were able to get unfetted access to their entire old squad, then you'd have an argument.

They were forced to sit out football for a long time and had no income stream to pay platers, therefore they had to handover all of their player to other clubs.

Whilst I don't believe South or the Knights should be given any free tickets to staying up, the interesting point is that both the Knights and South were prevented from competing in the last VPL season.

Should they have been able to have picked up where they left off, all would be fine, but the fact that they were denied access for a further 12 months has really put both clubs behind the 8-ball.

Having said that, South Melbourne are almost totally responsible for their own problems. I'm sick of south supporters using the A-League (and Victory) as a scapegoat for their own troubles.

its south own fault for losing there players and if that means they might lose the VPL so be it

It wasnt their fault that they lost them but it was their fault they couldnt get them back. Any way shit happens, the season is on and no one should recieve anymore handouts even though south got one in round one by being given the match of their choice because they knew it was a money maker.

Great to see South on top of the VPL ladder. Great leadership at SOuth.
Not happy with how Soccer Australia treated the Knights and South. They were left out to dry.

How Australian is Auckland?

New Zealand will be the 1st club to die.

Not even allowed to compete in the qualifying for the WCC, Lowy and O'Neill must have been shitting themselves at the thought of them winning it and representing our country.

I dont care greek flags etc etc, south MELBOURNE is greek, New zealand is foreign.

I hope you're right mate, I won't be losing any sleep when they cark it. Hopefully followed by Hollandia "I am woman hear me" Roar simply because their name's more appropriate to a lion park aimed at the 2-5 age bracket.

And I'd also be much more comfortable seeing South in the league than NZ Knights because they are more Australian than NZ ever were...
