View Full Version : Adelaide United vs Changchun Yatai

March 13th, 2008, 10:37 PM
7:30pm this Wednesday night at Hindmarsh.

Should be a cracking game, Changchun are the Chinese champions, and they kicked-off their campaign with a win too. A win here would really put United in a great place to qualify through (knocking-off the two most competitve teams in the group), they'd be 3 points clear regardless.

Hopefully, Adelaide can improve upon their disappointing ACL attendance from last season and pull around 12,000 people to the game. Word is there might be a few Chinese supporters in attendance as well.

United will have their two new signings to come into the team; Ognenovski and Ceccoli.

Odds aren't out yet, but I'll post them when they are released. I'm guessing United will start slight favorites.

You have to put the Chinese Champions as favourites... but if Adelaide can do the business in this home game... they have a really good chance of qualifying... it will bring a lot of confidence....

their previous acl crowds have been pretty poor ---more like 6000. think they'll get more after win in korea but stil don't reckon they'll pack hindmarsh.

If they can win this next week they will certainly put the pressure on the others in the group. Winning your home games is a must. They have put themselves with a real realistic chance of qualifying.

If I remember correctly, this was during our pre-season of season two, without the Brazilians, in Brebners first game/tournament with the club. At the time they were in their first season of Chinese superleague and were in the top end of the table. The game was played during a break in their season and they sent a second string side.

Anyhow, that's a couple years now in the past and are an improved side. They will be no pushover, however I think Adelaide can take them. Get the points there and they are looking very good to go on with it and top the group.

Assistant coach Philip Stubbins has been provisionally suspended from Adelaide United’s matches in the Group Stage of the AFC champions League for bringing the game into disrepute following alleged abusive comments made to the officials in the Australian side’s game against Pohang Steelers.

The AFC has requested Stubbins responds to the charges, which stem from the match commissioner’s and referee’s reports, and the Disciplinary Committee will adjudicate on the mat

* POLITICALLY correct it wasn't, but Changchung Yatai coach Gao Hongbo's blunt identification of Adelaide United's key player confirmed the waves being made by Reds striker Bruce Djite.

As both sides prepared for tonight's Asian Champions League game at Hindmarsh Stadium, Gao spoke mainly through an interpreter, but when asked who was the most dangerous United player, his answer was swift.

"The No11, the black boy," he said before clarifying.

"I like his running, most of Adelaide's attacks are based around him."

Djite made it on to the scoresheet in Adelaide's surprising 2-0 away win over South Korean champion Pohang last week.

Veteran Adelaide defender Ange Costanzo has urged local fans to come out in force.

"I don't think Australians have really taken to the ACL yet ... I don't know why," he said.

"Hopefully, our fans will come and support us tomorrow night.

"Asian football is fantastic. The skill is unbelievable."

Adelaide made a dream start to the competition when it beat Pohang Steelers 2-0 away from home in cold conditions last Wednesday.

Changchun Yatai will be a formidable opponent. It qualified by winning China's Super League last season.

Costanzo does not believe the Chinese will be disadvantaged by coming from the cold to play in the heat of Adelaide.

"It's going to be the same for both sides," he said. "When it is all boiled down, we are all professionals and should be able to adapt to all conditions."

POLITICALLY correct it wasn't, but Changchun Yatai coach Gao Hongbo's blunt identification of Adelaide United's key player confirmed the waves being made by Reds striker Bruce Djite.

As both sides prepared for tonight's Asian Champions League encounter at Hindmarsh Stadium, Gao spoke mainly through an interpreter, but when asked who was United's most dangerous player, his answer was swift.

"The No. 11, the black boy," he blurted, before clarifying. "I like his running, most of Adelaide's attacks are based around him."

Djite made it onto the scoresheet in Adelaide's surprising 2-0 away win over South Korean champion Pohang last week and impressed many with his poise while playing as the lone striker in coach Aurelio Vidmar's newly defence-oriented formation.

Having watched the fruits of an exacting six-week training regimen since United missed the A-League finals, Vidmar was not surprised to hear Djite singled out.

"Over the last 12 months, I think Brucie has developed extremely well. When he came here a couple of seasons ago, he was really rough around the edges, his touch wasn't the best. Our club gave him an opportunity and now he's starting to find the target," Vidmar said yesterday.

"He knows where the goals are and he's become a very valuable player."

So valuable that rumours surface regularly pointing Djite towards Europe — the most recent has him joining Socceroo Luke Wilkshire at Dutch side FC Twente.

But Djite is central to Adelaide. "For the last six weeks, we've been working on our structure defensively and through the midfield and that's all we've worked on day-in, day-out. (The players) have probably got bored of it, but I think they can see the benefits from last week's performance," Vidmar said.

bout $1.70 i think for the win...

Adelaide 1.66
Draw 3.50
Changchun 4.75

The above odds are what centrebet are offering. Another option is Changchun with the +1 handicap @ 2.10. So basically a Changchun win, or a draw will see you win the bet. Maybe the bookies under-estimating the Chinese?

Adelaide will be without Ognenovski, Salley (suspended), and will still be missing Sarkies and Agostino.

If the bookies are right with this one, Adelaide would be going straight to the top of the table - 2 wins from 2 matches, against the 2 toughest teams in the group.

andrew1116
March 19th, 2008, 02:40 PM
Maybe the bookies under-estimating the Chinese?

Maybe not.

Changchun Yatai got over the line against Vietnamese champions Binh Duong last week but there was a real sense of disappointment in the Chinese Super League champion's performance. Given the past performances of Vietnamese teams in this competition, Binh Duong was expected to be a whipping boy but put up a brave performance on a cold night in the north-east of China to only go down 2-1.

Due to national team commitments ahead of next week's World Cup qualifier against Australia, manager Gao Hongbo will be without three of his best players. Goalkeeper Zong Lei, playmaker Wang Dong and left winger Du Zhenyu are all with the national team and Gao will be struggling to fill the void left by their absence.

Those three men played last week but having been in a national camp until just before that match, they were well below their best.

Gao has acknowledged that Adelaide are the best team in the group, and that may indicate the Chinese team might be happy to get away with a point and still share the group lead with the Reds after two matches.
