Koreas match moved to Shanghai after anthem row
Fri Mar 7, 2008 2:16pm GMT
By Mark Ledsom
BERNE, Switzerland (Reuters) - World football's ruling body FIFA has agreed to a World Cup qualifier between North and South Korea being moved to China after a row over the playing of national anthems.
FIFA said the March 26 game, originally scheduled in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, would now be played in Shanghai with both anthems being played after the teams have lined up.
"This decision was taken today after the (Korean) associations...in the best interests of football agreed to the newly designated venue," FIFA said in a statement on Friday.
North Korea, still technically at war with its southern neighbour, had objected to the playing of the South Korean anthem in Pyongyang in the Asian zone round three qualifier.
The playing of both national anthems before international matches is stipulated in the World Cup regulations.
North Korea had called instead for a folk song treasured on both sides of the border, along with a joint flag used when they marched together at the Olympic Games.
The two sides, who have never previously met in this early stage of World Cup qualifying, will play again in the South Korean capital Seoul on June 22.
Seoul has in the past allowed the North to fly its flag and play its anthem when playing in the South.
besides the matches involving Australia, this is the other Asian qualifier I'm most interested in

china is generally a peace broker between north and south koreas. they're about the only nation that north korea listens to. holding it in shanghai is a good move to allow the game to go ahead.
but yes, can you say grudge match.

Wasn;t a bad game, both sides had a few chances but S Korea probably should have won. N Korea defended as if their lives were on the line :D

Sorta thing you come to expect between rival nations but anyway I reckon this would give the reds the advantage on the return

When i first heard of this game i was thinking the same thing...
But its not a big rivally apparently... As most people in the south simply dont care for N Korea or do care... as in unification...
So its not a hatred...
Japan is Koreas big rivial... and they do hate each other.

Daims is right, its not a big rivalry. Games against Japan are the big one, not only for the Korea's but also China too. Last time China played Japan the Chinese players tried to kick the shit out of the Japanese, it got pretty ugly.

No red cards in that game, probably should have been 2 or 3. But I doubt whether the ref would have got out of there alive if he had sent one of the chinese players off.

2004 Asian Cup, you couldn't hear a bar of the Japanese anthem all through the tournament. Everywhere the Japanese went, you would hear the anti-Japanese songs from the war. After the final, the CHinese fans absolutely rioted!!!!!!
