Some fairly big upsets in this round.

Iraq - One hit wonders? Especially considering they were playing in what has been pretty much their home town. A win for us at home and they will be pretty much out of the running.

Great win for Uzbekistan over the Saudis.... finally living up to their potential? I'd like to see them join the big boys of Asia. Their next match is at home to Singapore too, who will be thrilled with their win over Lebanon. Former Aussie Alex Duric scored for them.

Important win for Bahrain against Japan. Takes them onto 6 points.

Some massive upsets in this round of games.

Japan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran all dropped points. The biggest shock would have to be Japan losing to Bahrain, that is a monumental result and puts Bahrain on top of the group with a perfect record after 2 games.

Iraq clearly aren't the team they were at the Asian Cup. How many coaches have they had since then? They're very unstable and I wouldn't be surprised to see them not make it through to the next stage. In fact I don't think they will.

Japan will still make it through, but they would have fancied themselves for at least a draw.

Al Ajmi strikes early for Oman

BANGKOK, March 26 (Reuters) - Oman scored a first-minute goal then soaked up relentless pressure to earn a 1-0 win in a thrilling World Cup qualifier against Thailand on Wednesday.

Ismail Al Ajmi pulled away from his marker to convert a right-wing cross after 26 seconds and secure the points against a side whose constant attacking somehow failed to yield a goal.

'To win away from home is amazing,' Oman's Uruguayan coach Julio Cesar Ribas told reporters.

'This has been a big boost to our chances of World Cup qualification. We knew they would attack, so we planned to defend and get them on the counter-attack.'

Buoyed by a deafening near-capacity crowd in Bangkok, the Thais fought desperately and almost equalised 10 minutes after going behind when Teerasil Dangda's header hit the post and Datsakorn Thonglao's follow-up was cleared off the line.

The woodwork, a string of nervous goal line clearances and an impressive showing by Oman goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi frustrated the Thais, who have never reached the World Cup finals.

The towering Al Habsi, who is enjoying a run in the Bolton Wanderers first team, pulled off a series of fine saves from pacey strikers Teerathep Winothai and Teerasil Dangda.

The Thais had more than a dozen clear chances but Oman packed their area and defended desperately to cling on for victory, prompting jubilant celebrations by hundreds of travelling Omani fans.

'It was a very difficult game,' Al Habsi told Reuters. 'We were under pressure all the time, we did just enough to win.'

Thailand coach Charnwit Polcheewin was vexed by his team's inability to score but said they would not throw in the towel just yet.

'This is football, it's disappointing, but we still have a chance to go through to the next round,' he told reporters. 'We won't give up yet.'

The defeat left Thailand bottom of Group 2 after opening with two defeats while Oman have joined second-placed Japan on three points. Bahrain top the group with six points after beating Japan 1-0 in Manama on Wednesday.

SHANGHAI, March 26 (Reuters) - North and South Korea played out a goalless draw on Wednesday in a World Cup qualifier moved to China after the North had refused to play the anthem and fly the flag of its rival at the original venue of Pyongyang.

The home side had proposed to play a folk song respected on both sides of the border and fly the joint flag the countries march under at Olympic Games but FIFA ordered the match be moved after South Korean officials appealed against the proposal.

Thousands of South Koreans filled the stadium to sing their anthem and unfurl huge flags but their side, including forward Park Ji-sung of Manchester United and Fulham midfielder Seol Ki-hyeon - were frustrated by a stubborn defence.

North Korea also had chances with forward Jong Tae-se, who plays for Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale, and Hong Yong-jo of Serbia's FK Bezanija coming close to scoring as the teams met for the third time in World Cup qualifiers.

South Korea won the first two meetings between the teams in the qualifying campaigns for the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.

South Korea top Group Three in Asian third round qualifying on four points after thrashing Turkmenistan 4-0 while the North beat Jordan 1-0 in February's opening matches.

The two Koreas, who have yet to sign a peace treaty to officially end their 1950-53 war, state in their respective constitutions that the government on their side of the heavily armed border is the rightful one for the entire peninsula.

South Korea has allowed the North to fly its flag and play its anthem in past home games and hae said they will do so again in June's return World Cup qualifying match in Seoul.

SINGAPORE, March 26 (Reuters) - Singapore comfortably beat Lebanon 2-0 to pick up the first three points of their Asian World Cup third round qualifying campaign on Wednesday.

The city-state's 37-year-old striker Aleksander Duric, who scored twice on his debut in the 3-1 second stage aggregate victory over Tajikistan, opened the scoring in the seventh minute after capitalising on some poor Lebanese defending.

Midfielder Fazrul Nawaz then doubled the home side's advantage, effectively sealing the game after 24 minutes.

Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic praised Bosnian-born Duric, who was called-up to the national squad late last year after becoming a Singapore citizen.

'He was running hard in the first half and then in the second half he was playing more in midfield, I think he has done really well for us,' Avramovic told reporters.

Lebanon's coach Emile Rustom, who was missing four first-team players including Cologne midfielder Roda Antar, bemoaned his selection problems.

'It was expected. Lebanon were missing four key players, you can imagine Singapore without four players,' he said.

Singapore move to second in Group 4, level on points with Saudi Arabia whom they lost to in February and three points behind leaders Uzbekistan. Lebanon remain bottom without a point.

Does anyone have any info on whether the next phase group will be split East vs West? Or how do they normally split them?

Does anyone have any info on whether the next phase group will be split East vs West? Or how do they normally split them?

They are joined up again, or they have been historically

So in the next phase we should see two groups of 5, involving teams from anywhere in Asia (East, West, North or South), the top two getting automatic places and 3rd place in each group having an AFC playoff, with the winner of that then having a playoff against a team from another Confederation

This time may have a bit of a twist though, as I recall there being talk of New Zealand/Oceania representative being given a spot of soem kind?

Will double check

March 27th, 2008, 10:48 PM
As far as Im aware, South America 5th place now plays CONCACAF 1/2 spot for a place at the World Cup, while the Oceania winner players the Asian 5th place for a spot in the World Cup.

So we still may play New Zealand for a spot in the World Cup...how huge would that be.

Although unfortunately, we'll never have the blessing of such a showdown as we'll be first in our group every qualification stage!

John Helm
March 27th, 2008, 10:48 PM
Nah, what's happening is that the winner of the two-legged playoff between the two AFC third-placegetters in the next group stage will go into another two legged playoff against the champion of Oceania, which looks very much like New Zealand even at this early stage...

So it's:

Oceania vs 5th placed AsiA
- with the winner of this fixture going through to South Africa 2010

Interestingly the same arrangement as to when we played Iran in '97

I just remember there was talk about Oceania being reduced to a 1/4 place and being involved in an AFC group stage somewhere, I guess theyv'e reverted to the old arrangement which I personally think is better and am less irritated at

DOHA – Qatar coach Jorge Fossati had plenty of reason to be pleased after watching his side bounce back in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with a 2-0 win over Asian Cup holders Iraq on Wednesday.

The Qataris began their Group One campaign with a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Australia last month but goals by Sebastian Soria and midfielder Fabio Cesar delighted the capacity crowd of 18,000 at the Al Sadd Stadium and put Fossati’s side back into contention.

The Uruguayan was understandably delighted with the result.

"We didn't win because of luck or anything like that," said Fossati.

“We won because we fought hard in the match. We won because we played a superior level of football. I am happy with this win.

"Technically, we were far better than Iraq. I think my team was very motivated since we had Emerson and Soria playing together.

“Hussain Yasser was also back for us and that helped a great deal," he added.

However, the Qatar coach pointed out that his team needs to continue working hard if they are to progress to the next round of the qualifiers.

"There is a long way to go. If we lose our next match, things can go bad for us. If we lose, we will be in big trouble.

“Anything can happen from here onwards. So there is hard work to be done."

Iraq coach Adnan Hamad admitted his side were outplayed by the home side.

"Congratulations to the Qatar team, who played much better than us,” said Hamad.

“My team was badly shaken after the first goal. We did not expect such a start and it was difficult to recover after that.

"After playing good football, we allowed another mistake which resulted in the second goal. My players made many mistakes in the match. Maybe they were nervous.

“But I missed many of my top players. Nashat Akram did not play today as he was injured and there were other injuries as well. We could not have our best side.

"I think Qatar can go forward if they play like this. They played very smart football with few mistakes," the Iraq coach added.

Fabio Cesar (pictured in action against Jordan) scored one and assisted in another as Qatar defeated Asian champions Iraq. (AFP)

DOHA – Fabio Cesar created a goal and scored another to steer Qatar to a 2-0 win against Asian Cup holders Iraq in a Group One match at Al Sadd Stadium on Wednesday.

Cesar created the opening goal in the first minute with a cross to Sebastian Soria and added the second midway through the second-half to give Qatar their first win in their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying group.

Iraq went into the game without defender Bassim Abbas, who was out injured, and playmaker Nashat Akram, who was suspended after being sent off in the 1-1 draw with China last month.

And the Asian champions were quickly on the back foot as Qatar opened the scoring after only 30 seconds when Fabio Cesar’s cross from the left flank was met by Soria, who flicked the ball with his boot past goalkeeper Noor Sabri into the far right corner of the net.

Iraq nearly equalised after six minutes when Hawar Mulla Mohammed’s powerful free-kick from 25 yards flew over the crossbar.

However, Qatar remained in control and they should have extended their advantage on 26 minutes when Hussain Yasser’s shot was blocked by Mahdi Karim and Marcone Amaral’s follow up was turned out by Sabri for a corner.

Iraq went close again to levelling in the 38th minute when Hawar chipped the ball to Emad Mohammed who fired a powerful shot from inside the area that Qatar goalkeeper Mohamed Saqr punched away.

Iraq had another opportunity in the 64th minute as midfielder Qusai Munir put his powerful drive from outside the area over the crossbar.

But the match was settled in the three minutes later when Brazil-born striker Emerson, playing his first official match for Qatar, fired in a powerful free kick which was blocked by Iraq defender Ali Hussain Irhema.

Fabio Cesar picked up the loose ball and put it into the unguarded net to double the home side’s advantage.

Qatar took their foot off the gas in the remaining minutes and Iraq took control of midfield but Adnan Hamad’s players couldn't pull a goal back.

Iraq’s best chance came with only five minutes remaining when second half substitute Saleh Sadir’s shot from outside the area flew straight at Mohamed Saqr

Kuwait (in blue) did well to fight their way back and draw 2-2 with Iran. (AFP)

KUWAIT CITY – Kuwait coach Rodion Gacanin praised his team’s resilience on Wednesday as they recovered from an early two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Iran in their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Al Kuwait Stadium.

The Kuwaitis looked to be headed for their second straight loss in Group Three after falling behind to goals by Alireza Vahedi Nikbakht and Seyed Jalal Hosseini in the first four minutes of the match.

But Ahmed Ajab pulled one back before half-time and substitute Fahad Al Rashidi equalised with nine minutes remaining to salvage a point for the home team.

"I would like to congratulate the players for the fighting spirit that they showed throughout the game,” said the Croat.

“The players made a great comeback despite the two early goals that we conceded.

"Our team played well and forced our game against the Iranian players.

“We had a lot of chances to score but we couldn't convert them and we nearly got away with a victory at the end.”

Gacanin admitted though that his future with the national team remains unclear.

"We still have a chance to qualify from this group especially after the draw earlier today between Syria and United Arab Emirates.

“But I don't know about my future with the team as I haven’t receive anything yet whether I am to continue with the team or not."

Ali Daei was disappointed not to pick up three points from his first competitive match as Iran coach but he still offered up his praise for the performance of the Kuwaitis.

"This is the best ever performance that I have seen from Kuwait,” said the Iranian legend.

“I have to admit that I was surprised by their performance especially after coming from two goals down to get a point from the game.

"Our two early goals put us in a good position but our defensive mistakes saw us concede two goals although the assistant referee had a hand in their second goal as I thought we deserved a throw-in."

KUWAIT CITY – Kuwait came back from an early two-goal deficit to pick up their first point in Group Three of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a 2-2 draw against Iran at Al Kuwait Stadium on Wednesday.

Kuwait fell behind after only two minutes as Alireza Vahedi Nikbakht gave Iran the perfect start and Seyed Jalal Hosseini doubled the advantage for Ali Daei's side a couple of minutes later.

Ahmed Ajab pulled a goal back for Kuwait on 38 minutes before second half substitute Fahad Al Rashidi headed home the equaliser with nine minutes remaining to salvage a point for the home team.

Iran enjoyed an impressive start and had a 2-0 lead after only four minutes.

They opened the scoring after 90 seconds after a deep free-kick by Seyed Jalal Hosseini found Nikbakht.

With his back to the goal, the 27-year-old Perspolis midfielder stopped the ball with his chest before launching a bicycle kick past Kuwait goalkeeper Khaled Al Fadhli.

Hosseini went from provider to scorer two minutes later after a blunder by Al Fadhli gifted Iran a second goal.

Hosseini sent another free-kick into the Kuwait penalty box and it appeared that Al Fadhli had the ball covered but the 33-year-old bumped into his own defender, Hussein Fadel, and fell to the ground, allowing the ball to enter the empty net.

Kuwait should have pulled a goal back on eight minutes when Jarrah Al Ataiqi had a powerful shot from inside the area saved by Iran goalkeeper Seyed Mehdi Rahmati.

The home side had another chance seven minutes later when an acrobatic shot by Ajab from inside the area went wide while Hussein Fadel sent his header over the crossbar on the half-hour mark.

Kuwait eventually pulled a goal back in the 38th minute when Hosseini attempted to head the ball back to his goalkeeper but Ajab was faster than Rahmati and place his right-footed shot into the far right corner.

Kuwait went close again on 56 minutes when Mesaed Nada’s powerful free-kick went near the left upright and two minutes later, Bader Al Mutawa’s shot from inside the area came back off the far post.

In the 65th minute, Al Mutawa found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat but Rahmati palmed his shot away for a corner.

Gacanin brought in Al Rashidi and the Al Hazm striker had the ball in the net in the 77th minute but the effort was disallowed for offside.

However, he was not to be denied on 81 minutes when Mohamad Jarragh crossed from the left for an unmarked Al Rashidi to score with a powerful header to the left of Seyed Mehdi Rahmati.

Iran could have regained the lead with four minutes remaining when Nikbakht met a cross from the right with a first-time volley that went wide.

Kuwait finished the game with only 10 players as defender Mesaed Nada was sent off in the stoppage time for a bad tackle on Ebrahim Sadeghisenjani.

Macala delight as Japan jinx ends (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_166101520.html)

Milan Macala finally coached a side to victory over Japan after five attempts. (AFP)

MANAMA - Bahrain coach Milan Macala was delighted to finally get the better of Japan as his side claimed a 1-0 victory on Wednesday to go top of Group Two in the Asian qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Aala Hubail’s header 13 minutes from time sealed a memorable win for the home side at the Bahrain National Stadium and gave the Czech his first win in five attempts against the three-time Asian Cup winners.
Macala coached Saudi Arabia when they were trounced 4-1 at the 2000 Asian Cup and was in charge of Oman for three 1-0 losses in 2004 in the Asian Cup and World Cup 2006 qualifiers.

“After this game, I’m very happy because this, personally, is my fifth match against Japan and we have previously lost all of the games,” said Macala.

“We finally beat Japan today but it was very, very tough. I saw some very good moments from our side while Japan had nothing.

“At half-time, I told our players to be careful because both sides were waiting for their moment.

“The most important thing for us is the final result and I’m very happy that we scored the winning goal.

“It was very difficult but our players worked very hard for 90 minutes and now we’ve got six points.

“We cannot say we have already qualified because we still have a long way to go but having six points is a very good beginning.”

Takeshi Okada was disappointed to see his team suffer their first defeat in his second spell as Japan’s national coach.

“I feel very disappointed because it into the worst situation I could have imagined,” said the 51-year-old.

“I knew that anything could happen when it was still goalless midway through the second half, and I wanted to avoid that. However, we went into that situation and gave up the goal on a mistake.

Despite the setback, Okada remains confident Japan can continue along the road to a fourth consecutive appearance at the World Cup.

“It is a disappointing result but this is an away game and we can still win at home.

“The World Cup qualifiers will carry on and we still have time and I believe that we are still capable of qualifying.

“I’ve learnt many things about our players from today’s game and even if we had won or drawn today, we would still have to win at home anyway in our remaining games.”

Jordan coach Nelo Vingada was delighted with the away win over Turkmenistan. (AFP)
ASHGABAT - Jordan coach Nelo Vingada described his team’s 2-0 win over Turkmenistan on Wednesday as an important result as they climbed back into contention in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

A goal in each half by Waseem Al Bzoor and substitute Thaer Bawab secured all three points for the Jordanians, who moved within a point of group front-runners Korea Republic and DPR Korea, who played out a goalless draw in Shanghai earlier in the day.

After last month’s disappointing 1-0 home loss to DPR Korea, Vingada felt that the win in central Asia put his team right back into contention in Group Three.

"The result tonight was important for us especially after losing our first match against DPR Korea,” said Vingada.

“Winning against Turkmenistan was the only way to get back on track and maintain our chances to qualifying from the group.”

Vingada felt that everything went according to plan as he adjusted his tactics for the game.

"We changed our tactics and that surprised Turkmenistan and their coach, who watched our friendly match against Uzbekistan last week.

“Our players followed the plan and they had a good game.

"Our performance tonight was at our normal level. Our players showed their good potential and there was clear understanding between all areas of the team."

Vingada’s opposite number, Rahim Kurnbanmamedov, was at a loss for words after watching his side suffer their second consecutive loss, which left them firmly entrenched at the bottom of the group.

“I could not say what happened with my team tonight,” said the Turkmenistan coach.

“It was worst game on my coaching career and I have nothing to say.”

Second draw a setback for Syria (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_166101496.html)

Fans were left frustrated as Syria were held to their second 2010 World Cup qualifying draw. (AFP)

DAMASCUS - Syria coach Fajr Ibrahim was left disappointed after he saw his side surrender an early lead as they were held to a 1-1 draw with UAE in their World Cup Qualifying Group Five clash at Al Abbassiyin Stadium.

Ziad Chabo gave the home side the lead after just two minutes before Ismail Matar equalised early in the second half.

It was a second consecutive draw for Syria having already held Iran but Ibrahim, who unlike counterpart Bruno Metsu did attend the post-match press conference, lamented the fact his side could not collect all three points.

"The draw is like a defeat for us," he said.

"We faced an organised side and UAE were positionally good and had good possession but did not have any chances.

"Our team produce a disciplined performance, the players played according to the plan we had set out before hand and they marked the UAE players well.

"However, they lost concentration early in the second half and that allowed UAE the chance to score the equaliser.

"We missed two chances in the second half to score the winner and if we had taken one of them, we could have won the match.

"In the second half, we made several substitutions to increase the pressure but despite having several chances, we couldn't score.

"Ibrahim also felt a lack of warm-up games hindered his team's chances, although he did concede they were also feeling the effects of a busy domestic schedule.

"Our preparations before the game wasn't good as we didn't have any friendly matches," he added.

"But our clubs had a heavy schedule with several matches in continental championships and this took its toll on the players.

"However, despite only having two points, Ibrahim insisted it was far too early to write off Syria's chances of making it through to the next stage.

"Despite the draw, we still have a chance to qualify from the group," he said.

"We knew that UAE would be a tough team to beat and we had some problems against them.

"In general, the performance was convincing but the result was not good."

TASHKENT – Saudi Arabia coach Helio Dos Anjos insisted that his side’s 3-0 loss to Uzbekistan on Wednesday was not a shameful result and that he would not be stepping down from his position after their heavy defeat in central Asia.

The Uzbeks took the lead in the FIFA 2010 World Cup Qualifier at MHSK Stadium through a Timur Kapadze header on the stroke of half-time before Maksim Shatskikh doubled the lead and Server Djeparov’s penalty sealed victory.

The Saudis suffered a major loss when skipper Yasser Al Qahtani was forced off by injury late in the first half but Dos Anjos felt that Uzbekistan fully deserved the victory that sent them to the top of Group Four.

“We lost tonight because Uzbekistan played better than us,” said the Brazilian.

“At the same time, we were not well prepared and we also suffered a big loss when Yasser Al Qahtani had to come off although, fortunately, his injury is not serious.

“I’m not thinking about resignation because this is part of my job and they could sack me on any day.

“It is not a shameful result because every team could lose by a big score and Uzbekistan deserved their win today.”

Uzbekistan coach Rauf Inileyev was delighted to see his tactics pay off as his team avenged their 2-1 loss to the Saudis in last year’s Asian Cup quarter-finals.

“Yesterday I said that I would use three strikers and I did,” Inileyev said.

“Even if you consider Timur Kapadze and Victor Karpenko to be midfielders, we used them tonight as forwards and it worked.

“Maybe some people don’t like the way we played the game but we are satisfied with the result.

“Of course, we tried to play with a similar style as we did in our match against the Saudis at last year’s Asian Cup but it was very difficult tonight.”

SHANGHAI - Korea Republic manager Huh Jung-moo was left frustrated by DPR Korea's negative tactics after the two sides played out a goalless Group Three drawin Shanghai.

The southerners dominated a one-sided World Cup qualifying clash but failed to break down their northern neighbours in a match that took place at Shanghai Hongkou Stadium after it was switched from Pyongyang due to adispute over the use of national anthems and flags.

Seol Ki-hyeon wasted the best chance just after the break as Korea Republic were mostly restricted to long-range efforts.

"They played too defensively and left no space for our attacking line," said Huh.

"I am not happy with the result.

"Also, because of the weather and other reasons, we didn't prepare well for the match. My players couldn't adapt to the conditions here."

The result means the two Korean sides sit level on four points at the top of Group Three after opening victories but Huh admitted his side still have a lot of work to do if they are to qualify for the next stage.

"We have plenty to improve," he added. "We still left holes at the back and the attacking play wasn't strong enough."

DPR Korea coach Kim Jong-hun, on the other hand, was much more satisfied with both the result and the performance of his players.

"Our defence and attack combined very well today," Kim said.

"South Korea have become much stronger since the East Asian Championship and we executed our game plan successfully."

Kim believed his side were denied a crucial advantage after the game was moved from Pyongyang but promised his young side will only get better as the qualification campaign wears on.

"We should have had an advantage because the game should have been played in Pyongyang but players should get accustomed to all situations," he added.

"The team was formed only four months ago and we have gained plenty of experience from recent matches.

"But it's still only the starting point because we have four qualifiers to play, but I'll try my best to make my team stronger."

Kim also underlined key player Jong Tae-se did not enjoy one of his better games.

"He is very skillful and able but he wasn't in form and he didn't play as well as expected."

Jordan late show stuns Koreans (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_166920228.html)

Korea Republic fans were left stunned as Jordan came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in Seoul. (AFP)

SEOUL – Substitute Hasan Abdel Fatah scored twice as Jordan came from two goals down to hold Korea Republic to a 2-2 draw in a World Cup qualifier at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday.

The Koreans appeared to be coasting to victory in the Group Three match as Park Ji-sung opened the scoring in the 39th minute and Park Chu-young added a second from the penalty spot early in the second half.

But Abdel Fatah changed the course of the game, reducing the deficit in the 73rd minute before firing home his second ten minutes from time to give the Jordanians a share of the points.

Despite the draw, the Koreans went a point clear at the top of the group although arch-rivals DPR Korea could move ahead with victory against Turkmenistan in Ashgabat on Monday.

The hosts took the game to their opponents in the opening half with Park Chu-young squandering an early free-kick and a long ball by skipper Kim Nam-il just failing to pick out Lee Chung-yong as he charged in on goal.

As half-time approached, Park Chu-young swung in a corner from the right which was headed back at the far post by Kim Nam-il towards Lee, who directed the ball towards the six yard-box where Park poked a shot over the head of Amer Deeb into the roof of the net.

The Koreans extended their advantage three minutes into the second half when Cho Won-hee’s surging run through the Jordanian defence was brought to an unceremonious end by Hatem Aqel.

Although the initial contact appeared to be outside the box, Australian referee Mark Shield pointed to the spot and Park Chu-young converted despite the ball brushing off the leg of goalkeeper Lo’ai Elamaireh.

The Koreans could have extended their advantage in the 56th minute when Park Ji-sung’s centre was just too far ahead of the charging Park Chu-young while substitute Kim Do-heon squandered a glorious opportunity, putting a free header over the crossbar in the 69th minute.

The Koreans would rue those misses as Abdel Fatah, on as a second-half substitute for Mohammed Al Mutasim, got his side back into the match with 17 minutes left.

He stretched to meet a cross from the right in the six-yard box but his initial attempt was well saved by goalkeeper Kim Yong-dae.

Abdel Fatah’s follow up was also blocked but at the third attempt, he rolled the ball in at the far post.

The substitute then capitalised on slack Korean defending in the 80th minute, running in to acres of space between Lee Young-pyo and Oh Beom-seok to gather in a pass by Mohammad Khamees before firing past Kim Yong-dae from the edge of the Korean box.

Korea Republic coach Huh Jung-moo was left disappointed as his side threw away a two-goal lead against Jordan. (AFP)

SEOUL – A shell-shocked Huh Jung-moo was left to rue a late collapse by his team as Korea Republic threw away a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw with Jordan in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

Goals by Park Ji-sung and Park Chu-young either side of half-time put the hosts in control at Seoul World Cup Stadium against a Jordan side that created little until the final 20 minutes.

But substitute Hasan Abdel Fatah scored twice in the space of seven minutes to earn a point for the visitors.

The point kept Korea Republic on top of Group Three although DPR Korea can take pole position with a win in Turkmenistan on Monday.

“We played well for the most part and the players gave everything,” said Korea Republic coach Huh after the match. “But we didn’t take the three points and so I can’t be happy.

“I can’t understand it. We made mistakes too easily. After we scored the second goal, we didn’t score another and our concentration slipped.

“We have another game next week and need to focus on that,” added Huh, looking ahead to next Saturday’s return match in Amman.

Defender Lee Young-pyo was also left scratching his head.

“We controlled the game and had all of the ball,” Lee said.

“We were playing well but they had two chances and scored.

“We gave the goals away too easily but we are more than capable of winning next week.”

Meanwhile, Jordan coach Nelo Vingada was beaming after seeing his side rescue an unlikely point.

“I am very happy with this result,” said the Portuguese tactician.

“After we conceded two goals, I didn’t know if we would be able to score twice as I know that Korea Republic is a stronger team than us and has a good professional league and overseas players.

“After we let in two goals, I didn’t think that we would be able to score but if you don’t make any more mistakes then you are still able to have a good game.

“Now we have to get ready for the game at home. We are not able to play at the same level as Korea but as it is a home game, we want to play well.”

Here's some Australia related info before going onto some of the other stuff

Captain Kewell seals Socceroos win (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018518.html)

Skipper Harry Kewell scored the only goal of the game as Australia edged Iraq 1-0. (AFP)

BRISBANE – Harry Kewell scored early in the second half as Australia took a huge step towards the final round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers with a 1-0 win over Iraq at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

The Iraqis created the majority of chances in the opening half but were undone by Kewell’s header 75 seconds after the restart, which sent the Socceroos up to seven points, four clear of second-placed Qatar at the top of Group One.

The defeat was the second in a row for Asian Cup holders Iraq, who are bottom of the group with only one point from three games

Needing a win to revive their flagging campaign, the visitors dominated early on and nearly went in front in the fifth minute when Emad Mohammed’s shot from the edge of the box rocked the Australian crossbar.

Australia responded a minute later on a quick counter-attack as Scott McDonald’s neat back-heel opened up space for Marco Bresciano whose drive from the top of the Iraqi box was well stopped by Iraq goalkeeper Noor Sabri.

Iraq skipper Younis Mahmoud was a lively figure, firing a shot from a narrow angle in the 11th minute that was kept out by Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

Kewell should have done better in the 19th minute when he outjumped Saad Attiya to reach a David Carney cross but put his header straight at Sabri.

Emad was found alone in the Australia box by Mahdi Karim’s neat pass from the flank in the 26th minute but his shot on the turn was kept out by Schwarzer's right leg.

As half-time approached, Younis was found unmarked in the box by Mahdi Karim but the normally clinical striker headed wide.

The Iraqis would rue those misses as the home side went in front almost immediately after the restart.

Brett Emerton received the ball from a throw-in and sent in a measured cross towards Kewell, who out-jumped Haidar Abdul-Amir to head past a static Noor Sabri.

The Australians tightened up after taking the lead, allowing the Iraqis hardly a sight on goal for much of the half.

They could have extended their lead in the 66th minute when Luke Wilkshire found Kewell completely unmarked in the box. The Australian captain tried to surprise Sabri by flicking the ball with his left outstep but the Iraq goalkeeper alertly stopped the shot.

With eight minutes remaining, Australia had a lucky escape when a shot by Younis hit Schwarzer and ricocheted off Ali Rehema wide of goal.

Hawar Mulla Mohammed was then denied by Schwarzer after finding himself in the clear and North managed to block out a header by substitute Mostafa Karim as Australia hung on for the win.

We got lucky, admits Verbeek (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018519.html)

Australia coach Pim Verbeek felt kuck was on the Socceroos' side as they edged Iraq 1-0. (AFP)

BRISBANE – Australia coach Pim Verbeek felt that his team were fortunate to get a 1-0 win over Iraq on Sunday that boosted their hopes of advancing to the final round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers.

Harry Kewell’s 47th minute header secured all three points for the Socceroos at Suncorp Stadium although the home side rode their luck at times with Iraq missing a handful of clear chances.

“I think everybody understands that I am very happy with the three points, but we started quite nervous," the Dutchman said.

"We were very lucky at the start when the ball hit the underside of the bar. I think that's the story of the whole game, we gave too many chances away.

“We were lucky in that situation, we didn't use the free players, we didn't use our qualities. Overall I'm sure we can play must better.”

However, Verbeek praised the commitment shown by his players throughout the 90 minutes.

"What I can say about my players is that they never give up and that's not always appreciated.

“They are fantastic players and they played for 50,000 fantastic fans, who were the extra man today.

“But we should not forget that the Iraqis did a very good job against us. They made it very difficult. I am happy with the three points, but not the performance."

The victory sent the Australians four points clear at the top of Group One while Iraq are in last place with only a single point.

However, Iraq coach Adnan Hamad has not given up hope of seeing his side advance to the next round.

"There is still a chance for the Iraqi team,” said Hamad.

“We have to do our best to win the next three matches. We have to win against Australia (in Dubai) next week."

Hamad admitted the turmoil surrounding Iraq's participation in this game after FIFA first imposed and then lifted a suspension of the Iraqi Football Association affected his players.

"Of course it affected the players a lot, but as you know we are always under pressure, we are used to playing under pressure.

“We're the only football team in the world who plays outside our country. We come together from different countries, but these things give us more will to play well and we're going to fight to the last.

"I congratulate Australia for the win. I think my team went out to try to win but at the end of the day, that's football.”

And here's some lead up talk going into some of the other matches, just to get a feel I guess...

Dos Anjos looks for Lebanon lift (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018556.html)

http://images.the-afc.com/images/common/articleimage/primary/helio%20dos%20anjos_ksa_primary.jpg
Saudi Arabia coach Helio dos Anjos is looking for a victory over Lebanon to lift the Saudis chances of World Cup qualification. (AFP)

RIYADH – After a stunning 3-0 loss to Uzbekistan in their last Group Four outing, Saudi Arabia are eager to get back their World Cup qualifying back on track when they face Lebanon at the King Fahd International Stadium on Monday.

The Saudis are seeking a fifth consecutive World Cup appearance but hit a roadblock in March when they were soundly beaten by the Central Asians, who lead the group with maximum points from two games.

Saudi Arabia are by no means out of the running with two teams from the group advancing to the next round and coach Helio dos Anjos has reason to be happy after victories against Syria (1-0) and Kuwait (2-1) in recent warm-up matches.

“I’m satisfied with our preparations as we have won matches against Syria and Kuwait,” said dos Anjos.

“The results are probably not so important in friendlies but we had good performances and results at the same time.

“Lebanon are also a strong team but we have prepared well for them. I’ve decided on a formation that we will use and hopefully we can get the points.”

The biggest concern in the Saudi camp is a thigh injury suffered by skipper Yasser Al Qahtani that resulted in him missing their last training session.

Midfielders Manaf Abushgair and Saud Khariri are doubtful after missing the match against Kuwait, defender Naif Al Qadi is out after injuring his foot while defender Walid Abdrabh is suspended for picking up two yellow cards.

Lebanon arrived in Riyadh on Friday after losing 2-1 to Qatar in a friendly in Doha.

Midfielder Roda Antar had remained in Lebanon to rest after a long season in Germany with Cologne, while defender Mootazbellah Al Jounaidi will miss the game because of college exams in Beirut.

Lebanon coach Emile Rustom knows that his side face an uphill battle after losing both previous games against Uzbekistan and Singapore.

“It will be very hard because we will be playing against a team who are at a better level than us and are playing at home in front of their fans,” said Rustom.

“Although we had a one-week training camp in Doha and played against their national team, we are not satisfied with our preparations.

“Other teams had better preparations than us but we must give our best and play well.

“Unfortunately we are missing the services of several experienced players and it is a shame because they are good players who play abroad and could have been useful for such an important match.”

Seems to be a bit of a reordering happening, where a lot of the "middle tier" countries seem to be catching up etc, Uzbekistans 3-0 win was no fluke and as we saw with the Korea result against Jordan the traditional powerhouses are slipping a tiny bit, Saudi Arabia etc have to stop impulsively sacking their Coach all the time

Thailand missing key trio (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018543.html)

Teerasil Dangda is one of three key players ruled out of Thailand's crucial World Cup qualifer against Bahrain. (AFP)

BANGKOK – Thailand’s hopes of picking up their first points in their Group Two campaign in the Asian World Cup qualifiers have suffered a huge setback with three key players likely to be sidelined for Monday’s match against Bahrain at Rajamangala Stadium

Defender Kiatprawut Saiwaew, midfielder Sutee Suksomkit and forward Teerasil Dangda are unlikely to figure for Chanvit Phalajivin’s side, who are desperately seeking a turnaround in fortunes after losing their first two matches against Japan and Oman.

Bahrain enter the match as favourites after picking up maximum points so far and Chanvit knows that his team have their backs against the wall.

“Our situation is that we are the underdogs but we have no choice but to win the match,” said the Thailand coach.

“While Bahrain can play the match comfortably, we have to change our tactics because I believe that they will play defensively and try to hit us on the counter-attack.

“Our players must keep their focus and concentration and play carefully.

“We will try to use two strikers with good pace to try to upset their defence and get the goals that we need,” Chanvit added.

Chanvit is concerned though by the absence of Teerasil, Kiatprawut and Sutee.

“We have some problems as three key players will miss the match,” Chanvit added.

“If they were not injured, we would have the best line-up possible for Thailand with every position filled perfectly.

“But we now have to change some positions, using Nataporn Phanrit as a centre half and Natthaphong Samana as a left wing back while Teerathep Winothai and Ekaphan Inthasen will start up front.”

Bahrain warmed up for the match with a 1-0 win in Singapore last Wednesday and Czech coach Milan Macala is confident that his players are ready for the encounter which could help sew up their spot in the next round.

“We prepared ourselves very well for this match,” said Macala.

“We came to Singapore more than a week ago for the players to get used to the weather in this region.

“I am confident that our team is good enough to beat Thailand although it will not be easy for us.

“If we beat Thailand then it would put us in a good position for our next three matches and improve our chances of qualifying for the next stage.

“We will not change our players very much from our previous match because this is the best team we have at this time.”

Raddy relying on Lions' heart (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018542.html)

http://images.the-afc.com/images/common/articleimage/primary/singapore_sea%20games_primary.jpg
Team spirit has been the reason behind Singapore's success according to head coach Raddy Avramovic. (AFP)

SINGAPORE – Singapore coach Raddy Avramovic believes that his players can stand up to the challenge of one of Asia’s best teams when they host Uzbekistan in a World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium on Monday.

The Uzbeks lead Group Four with maximum points after wins against Lebanon and Saudi Arabia and Avramovic admits his admiration for the central Asian side.

“They are a team of good quality and should have gone further than they did at last year’s Asian Cup,” said the Serbian.

“They are well organised, well disciplined and are also very strong physically.

“They are also a very skilful side and I expect them to play a very technical game on Monday.

However, Avramovic is confident that his players can rise to the occasion.

“It is good that we are at this stage of the World Cup qualifiers which is the result of good teamwork and team spirit. We hope it continues this way as we are difficult to beat if we play at 100%.

“The reality is that Uzbekistan are a tough side but we see this as a challenge and a good opportunity to prove ourselves.

“If you don’t wish to play in a competition like this, I think you will never learn and develop. But I think we have the team spirit to do well.”

The tight Uzbek league schedule has allowed Uzbekistan coach Rauf Inileev little time to prepare his squad for a crucial month of World Cup qualifiers.

The team only assembled for centralised training in Tashkent on Tuesday and arrived in Singapore on Saturday after an eight-hour flight from Uzbekistan.

However, Inileev downplayed their lack of preparations.

“We have not had time for a proper training camp or friendlies and of course it is not ideal that we don't have time to adjust to the time difference and climate in Singapore,” he explained.

“But since there is not much time before the next game in Tashkent, it is better for us to arrive here two days before, play the game and leave before the body has time to adjust.”

Despite his team’s strong position in the group, Inileev is not underestimating Singapore.

“This is the third round of the World Cup qualifiers and there are only strong teams playing at this level.

“We respect all of the team in this round including Singapore and we know that it will not be easy tomorrow.”

The Uzbeks have most of their top players available including striker Maksim Shahtskikh but are missing defender Bakhtiyor Ashurmatov and forward Ulugbek Bakaev, who are undergoing treatment for injuries in Germany.

Singapore skipper Indra Sahdan will not be in the starting line-up due to a hamstring injury while midfielder Hariss Harun has been ruled out by a knee injury.

Will be interesting to see how the above match plays out, Uzbekistan are a real curiosity and it would be interesting to contrast how they play/perform against how we have in our friendlies vs Singapore. Personally I am hoping they are one of the teams we avoid in the next round, as they are one of those teams whos ranking and seeding probably don't reflect their actual skill and so it would be tougher with them in the group. Out of the higher seeded nations, it seems Korea are in a bit of a pickle and would be preferable over say Japan who are a bit more in form etc.

Rahim rings the changes (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018585.html)

http://images.the-afc.com/images/common/articleimage/primary/Rakhim_190.jpg
Turkmenistan coach Rakhim Kurbanmamedov is expected to field his foreign legion against DPR Korea.

ASHGABAT – Defeats in their first two matches in Group Three has forced Turkmenistan coach Rahim Kurbanmamedov to make considerable changes to his side for their World Cup qualifier against DPR Korea at the Olympic Stadium on Monday.

With Turkmenistan’s hopes of reaching the final round of the Asian qualifiers hanging by a thread, Kurbanmamedov tested out a number of new players during a friendly against Oman on May 18.

The coach was suitably impressed despite the 2-1 loss to call up striker Berdy Shamuradov, the top scorer in last year’s Turkmenistan championship, and 20-year-old midfielders Gubancha Abylov and Vitaly Alikperov.

Nevertheless the main core of the team to face the North Koreans is expected to be made up of foreign-based players with three from Russia – midfielder Vyacheslav Krendelev, Khimki forward Vladimir Bairamov and goalkeeper Pavel Kharchik – and another 10 from clubs in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

“After two defeats, the team needs to rehabilitate itself before its supporters”, said Kurbanmamedov.

“The names of the 18 players on the team sheet will be decided on the day of the game itself.”

The coach revealed that the players met with recently elected president of Turkmenistan Football Federation, Deryageldy Orazov, in the build-up to the game.

“We had a thorough heart-to-heart which turned out to be highly productive and should help the team.

“On Monday we are up against a very strong opponent who we treat with respect.

“And it is very comforting that the players showed at the meeting with the TFF leadership that they are prepared to give every effort to the prestige of the nation and will be fighting for victory.”

DPR Korea, who could top of the group with a win after Saturday’s 2-2 draw between Korea Republic and Jordan in Seoul, arrived in Ashgabat on Wednesday but avoided speaking to the media until the fourth day of their stay in Turkmenistan.

“We have carried out productive preparations for the match and at present there are no problems in the team”, said coach Kim Jong Hun.

“We’ve brought our optimal side, strengthened by Serbia-based Hong Yong-jo, who scored the winner in the home match against Jordan, and Jong Tae-se from Japanese club Kawasaki Frontale.

“Both are versatile players and we will decide which positions they will play on Monday at the training session prior to the game.

“I’m not the kind to make predictions. Turkmenistan have a number of foreign-based players in their squad and are a very good side that play in a European style.

“Nevertheless we are not going to play for a draw away from home and we will be striving only for victory.”

And from our group

Sebastian Soria (pictured left celebrating a goal against Lebanon) has been highlighted as Qatar's dangerman. (AFP)

DOHA - China will be wary of Qatar striker Sebastian Soria when the two sides meet in a World Cup qualifier at Al Sadd Stadium on Monday.

Quintana has been in good form for Qatar recently, bagging two goals in a 2-1 win over Lebanon last Tuesday, and China coach Vladimir Petrovic is understandably concerned about the Uruguay-born player for the Group One clash.

"Sebastian is the best Qatari player. We know this very well,” said Petrovic of the 24-year-old striker.

“He has won many matches for them and he is the one who has scored goals for Qatar in the last few months. We will have to mark him well.

"But we know Qatar have many international players that we must contend with and they are good players who can win matches for Qatar."

The Chinese coach, however, warned that his team has arrived in Doha well prepared.

"We have thoroughly prepared for this clash. We have played a few friendly matches in our build-up to this match and I am happy with our overall readiness.

“I know that we are in a difficult group, and that each match has its own importance. But we will fight for every point.

"I am convinced that the football fans in Qatar will see a great match with a lot of flair. I hope the Chinese fans here turn up in large numbers to support their team," Petrovic added.

Qatar has recently been hit by a hit wave with temperatures hitting a high of 45 degrees Celsius during the weekend but Qatar coach Jorge Fossati does not believe that it will be too much of a concern for the visiting Chinese team.

"I know there are quite a few places in China with a similar climate,” said the Uruguayan.

“Besides, China knew they were to play us in Doha at this time of the year. So, I don't think the warm weather will be to our advantage.

"I think China played a good match against Australia (in their last Group One match) and were unlucky not to get maximum points.

“You cannot ignore any team in this group as it is a very difficult group.

"Just see how Iraq played against Australia (on Sunday). They could have won the match with a bit of luck," Fossati added.

lol at Jorge Fossati " I don't think the heat will be too much of an advantage for us"
- when questioned about the heatwave that has hit Doha this week, up to 45 fucken degrees.

stick to organising your football team, pre-match banter obviously ain't your style.

I think that Qatar will actually be a much more difficult prospect at home for us than they were here, very interested to see how the Chinese go tonight. NufcMVFC keep them articles coming, good reading bro!

Uzbek's banging 5 in a half is pretty bloody impressive, particularly away!

Come on Thailand, lets hope they can get going in the 2nd half, scoop 3 points and get back in the mix

Where's the website where you can get these, I often go to Soccernet but in terms of Asian WCQ's they seem a bit behind

Iv'e got Thailand 2-2 with Bahrain at Half Time, and in the first half it's 0-0 between North Korea and Turkmenistan

2-5 at half time is something, have to remember our fringe players were 0-0, and even though we beat them by a coupe of goals in an Asian Cup warm up, still looked dodgy, seem that Uzbekistan have a bit of firepowe on them, generally speaking, beating Saudi Arabia 3-0 in this confederation isn't a bad feat (even though they seem to turn into whipping boys at the World Cup at times)

Bahrain maintained their 100% record with a 3-2 win over Thailand. (AFP)

BANGKOK – Sayed Mohamed Adnan netted a second-half winner as Bahrain remained at the top of Group Two in the Asian World Cup qualifiers after a hard-fought 3-2 win against last-placed Thailand at Rajamangala Stadium on Monday.

The visitors twice took the lead in the first half with goals by Salman Issa and Ismail Abdullatif only for Thailand to hit back through Sarayoot Chaikamdee and Teeratep Winothai.

But Adnan’s low shot just before the hour mark went past a crowd of players in the Thai box, sealing Bahrain’s third consecutive win in the group.

They remained three points ahead of Japan, who beat Oman 3-0 earlier on Monday.

Thailand were the better side early on and could have opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Datsakorn Thonglao’s long-range effort went inches over the crossbar.

Tawan Sripan had a first-time shot stopped by Sayed Mohamed Jaafar in the 16th minute and the Bahrain keeper was called into action again four minutes later to keep out Teeratep’s shot from the right flank.

However, it was Bahrain who opened the scoring when Mohammed Salmeen sent in a low cross from the right, which was turned in by Issa from close range in the 22nd minute.

Bahrain’s lead lasted for only three minutes as the home side levelled the scores after a corner by Tawan was flicked on by Nataporn Phanrit to Sarayoot, whose point-blank header beat Jaafar.

The Bahrainis regained their lead in the 35th minute when Aala Hubail crossed from the right to Faouzi Aaish, whose shot was well saved by Thailand goalkeeper Sivaruk Tedsungnoen only for the rebound to be pounced on by Abdullatif, who dispatched the ball into the unguarded net.

But Thailand equalised for the second time in stoppage time at the end of the first half when Teeratep gathered in a long pass and coolly slotted a left-foot shot into the far corner of the net.

However, Bahrain restored their advantage in the 57th minute when Mohamed Hussain's header off a corner was cleared off the goal-line to Sayed Mohamed Adnan, who picked up the ball on the edge of the box and fired a powerful shot into the bottom right corner of the Thai net.

Thailand nearly replied three minutes after the hour as Tana Chanabut was released by Phichitphong Choeichiu’s neat pass but saw his shot turned aside by Jaafar for a corner.

Thailand continued to exert the pressure in the remaining minutes and went close again 12 minutes from time as Teeratep’s header flew over the crossbar.

SINGAPORE - Uzbekistan strengthened their position at the top of Group Four in the Asian World Cup qualifiers, recording their third consecutive win with a 7-3 thumping of Singapore at the National Stadium.

The Lions twice came from behind in the first half with goals by Aleksandar Duric and Mustafic Fahrudin cancelling out strikes by Timur Kapadze and Victor Karpenko, but Server Djeparov bagged a brace and Vitaly Denisov added another to put the visitors 5-2 up at half-time.

Substitute Aziz Ibragimov and skipper Maksim Shatskikh struck for the Uzbeks after the interval while John Wilkinson bagged a consolation goal for the hosts.

Kapadze opened the scoring in the 10th minute after latching on to a pass by Denisov but the hosts took only six minutes to respond.

Shi Jiayi's corner from the left was cleared only as far as Daniel Bennett whose 40-metre shot rebounded off the right post. Goalkeeper Ignatiy Nesterov failed to secure the loose ball and Duric quickly tucked in the rebound.

A lapse in concentration by Bennett in the 21st minute allowed Karpenko time and space to put Uzbekistan back in front but Singapore drew level again ten minutes later after Khairul Amri's run into the box drew a desperate tackle from Islom Inomov, resulting in a penalty that was converted by Fahrudin.

The match was highly competitive until that point but the Uzbeks pulled away in the closing minutes of the half.

In the 34th minute, Mohamed Noh Rahman's desperate lunge blocked Shatskikh's shot on the line but Djeparov was on hand to tuck in the loose ball.

A neat sequence of passes in the 42nd minute resulted in a fourth goal as Kapadze's low cross from the right to Odil Ahmedov was laid on to an unmarked Denisov to fire home.

Uzbekistan added another a minute before the break as Djeparov's in-swinging corner from the right embarrassed goalkeeper Lionel Lewis, flying straight into the Singapore net.

It was more of the same after the break despite Singapore's attempts to get back into the match.

Shatskikh blasted a shot high and wide after being put through by Ibragimov in the 54th minute but Ibragimov did not waste his own opportunity eight minutes later when he climbed above the Singapore defence to nod in Uzbekistan's sixth goal.

Wilkinson lifted the home side's flagging spirits with Singapore's third of the night when he pounced on a rebound in the 73rd minute but Shatskikh found space and time to complete the rout two minutes from time.

Japan players celebrate Yuji Nakazawa's opener against Oman. (AFP)

YOKOHAMA – Japan turned on the style at Nissan Stadium on Monday, trouncing Oman 3-0 to revive their Group Two campaign in the Asian World Cup qualifiers.

Captain Yuji Nakazawa headed Japan in front after ten minutes and Yoshito Okubo extended the lead midway through the first half, firing home after a superb knock-down by Marcus Tulio Tanaka.

Shunuke Nakamura added a third with an accurate right-footed strike four minutes into the second half as Japan asserted their dominance on a damp evening in Yokohama to claim their second win in three games.

Takeshi Okada’s side were looking to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Bahrain in their last Group Two outing and could have gone in front after only three minutes as a loose headed clearance by an Omani defender flew straight towards Keiji Tamada.

Oman goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi was well out of position but the Japanese striker snatched at the opportunity, volleying over from the edge of the box.

But it was only a brief reprieve for the visitors as Nakazawa soon put his side ahead , losing marker Nabil Ashoor before powerfully heading home a Yasuhito Endo corner from six yards.

Oman offered little and the closest they came to an effort in the opening half was a speculative shot by Mohamed Mubarek from 25 metres that flew well wide.

A long ball by Nakamura just failed to pick out Daisuke Matsui in the 17th minute, hitting the striker in the back, but the Celtic playmaker managed to get the delivery right in the 22nd minute as Japan extended their lead.

Spotting the run of Tanaka, Nakamura lofted in a superb pass from the halfway line that was headed down near the penalty spot by the Urawa Reds defender.

Okubo charged in unchallenged and placed a right-footed shot past a helpless Al Habsi.

Japan continued to dominate possession and went three goals up in the 49th minute when Matsui won the ball on the left flank and fed it to Nakamura, who drifted infield, wrong-footing Hassan Madhafar to open up space before firing an accurate low shot past the outstretched arms of Al Habsi from 20 yards.

The Japanese took their foot off the gas as the heavy rain intensified in the second half but remained well in control, dominating possession and not allowing the Omanis a sniff on goal.

Substitute Shinji Kagawa could have added a fourth at the death but put his free header straight at Al Habsi.

The only Big 5 team struggling ATM is Iran

Group E
UAE..........5pts
Syria.........5pts
Iran..........3pts
Kuwait......1pt

but Iran have to go away twice in the next 3 games (albeit it not very far)

Luck was against us, says Daei (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018657.html)

http://images.the-afc.com/images/common/articleimage/primary/daei_primary.jpg

TEHRAN - Iran coach Ali Daei felt his side were unfortunate not to claim all three points after they were held to a goalless draw by the UAE in their World Cup qualifying clash at Azadi Stadium on Monday.

Iran held the upper hand throughout the contest but were unable to convert their superiority into goals, although Javed Nekounam nearly snatched victory with five minutes remaining only to see his powerful header tipped over by keeper Majed Nasser.

UAE, meanwhile, were content to play on the counter with substitute Faisal Khalil wasting their best chance 20 minutes from the end and the result means Iran are still searching for their first victory in Group Five ahead of the return clash in Al-Ain on Saturday.

However, a defiant Daei felt his players deserved credit for their display and underlined only wasteful finishing prevented them from triumphing after a small minority of fans called for the 39-year-old to resign just three months into his reign as national team boss.

"I did my job as the coach," he said.

"I prepared the players to win but a coach can't put on the kit and go onto the pitch and score goals. We needed more luck.

"We played the better football and we had more chances, which we didn't take.

"I knew the United Arab Emirates would come to counter attack and I told that to the players. They shut down the space in the middle so we had to attack down the wings.

"That's football and we're used to it. I'm optimistic that we'll beat them (on Saturday). We're only interested in taking three points from the last three matches."

UAE coach Bruno Metsu, meanwhile, was far happier with a point that ensures his side will at least enjoy a share of top spot in Group Five and paid tribute to a resilient defensive performance from the visitors.

"We defended with 11 players, as a team," he said.

"My job as coach is to get a result and I did that.

"But I'm only half satisfied because we didn't win. Both sides had good spells in the match but we came away with the better result in the end."

"We don't have a very good record against Iran but today, we came to Tehran and earned a point."

Here we go, from our group, personalyl I thought thsi was a good result for us, as at this stage as it means we have projected ourselves in front and got a little bit of a buffer, but the next game is absolutely crucial, a win would be great but need a draw minimum against Iraq to maintain the momentum, anyway a discussion for next time.

China battle for draw in Doha (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018658.html)

DOHA – Qatar remain a point ahead of China in the race for second spot in Group One of the Asian World Cup qualifiers after a goalless draw between the two teams at Al Sadd Stadium on Monday.

Both sides struggled to create chances in the hot and draining conditions of Doha but the home side very nearly stole the win when Sayd Ali Bechir hit the crossbar two minutes from time.

The result leaves Qatar in second place with four points, three behind leaders Australia and one ahead of the Chinese, who they will meet again in Tianjin this coming weekend.

China striker Han Peng headed wide after only three minutes and wasted a good opening on the quarter-hour mark, when he was found alone on the left of the Qatar box but rolled a weak shot wide of the far post.

Sebastian Soria was marked out as Qatar’s main goal threat by the Chinese prior to the match but the normally prolific striker had a poor outing, wasting an opportunity in the 29th minute when he slipped as he attempted to control the ball with his chest after a poor clearance off a corner kick.

Qatar ‘s best chance of the half came seven minutes before the break when a Hussain Yasser free-kick was met at the near post by Marcone Amaral who directed his header over the crossbar.

Early in the second half, Mesaad Al Hamad’s cross from the right found Yasser but his glancing header went straight at goalkeeper Song Zhenyu.

China’s best effort of the game arrived in the 69th minute when Zhou Haibin played the ball from the halfway line in the direction of Han Peng.

With Abdulla Koni pulling up, apparently with an arm injury, the space opened up for the striker who saw his shot deflect off Ibrahim Abdullmajed and nearly loop past goalkeeper Mohamed Saqr, who just managed to get a touch to send the ball wide.

With three minutes remaining, Qatar were awarded a free-kick 20 metres from goal but Fabio Montesin failed to convert the opportunity as his left-footed effort curled just over the angle of bar and post.

And a minute later, the woodwork came to China’s rescue as a cross by Talal Al Bloushi was headed by Bechir against the crossbar.

China's goalless draw with Qatar could help the progress to the next stage, according to head coach Vladimir Petrovic. (AFP)

DOHA - China coach Vladimir Petrovic is confident his side are still very much on target to progress from Group One of the Asian FIFA World Cup qualifiers after securing a goalless draw at Qatar on Monday.

Qatar remain a point ahead of China in the race for second spot in the group as both sides struggled to create chances in the hot and draining conditions of Doha.

The result leaves Qatar in second place with four points, three behind leaders Australia and one ahead of the Chinese, who they will meet again in Tianjin this coming weekend.

"I think we are still in the competition," said Petrovic. "This is a good result for us. We had come here for a win but getting a 0-0 draw is not bad at all.

"It was an extremely difficult match for us in very trying playing conditions. It was very hot and humid today.

"So I am happy that my boys played a good match. Now we can prepare for the return game and our goal was not to lose this match at any cost and we managed to achieve our goal.

"My players looked tired because of the tough playing conditions and because of the long season for many of them.

"I think Qatar also played well in this match so we have to be careful about them in the return match."

Qatar coach Jorge Fossati, meanwhile, was disappointed his side were unable to get a vital win, but stressed they will battle for a victory in the next game.

"I wasn't really happy with the way my players played in the first half, especially in the last 20 minutes of the first half," he said.

"We played much better in the second half and missed some good chances to score but I will not blame my players for the draw.

"They tried their best in difficult conditions. Now we have to look at our next game.

"I am afraid we don't have much time to prepare for the next match but we will give it our best shot.

"We will try to get a positive result in the next match. I knew China would play a defensive game, but they seemed well organised."

Will be interesting to see how the return leg pans out, hopefully a draw or something to help us maintain our buffer

DAMASCUS - A second-half strike from Jehad Al Hussien was enough to steer Syria to their first win in Group Five of the Asian FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they defeated Kuwait 1-0 on Monday.

Al Karama midfielder Al Hussien scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute to move Syria joint top of the group alongside the United Arab Emirates.

Kuwait made a good start to the game and they nearly opened the scoring after just three minutes when Mohammad Jarragh's free kick from the edge of the area slammed against the left upright.

Syria started to get into the game more and had their first chance in the 15th minute when midfielder Mahmoud Al Amna's powerful shot went wide.

But it was Kuwait who had the best chances in the first half as Ahmed Ajab headed into the hands of Syria goalkeeper Mosab Balhous after 37 minutes before he shot wide soon after.

Syria striker Firas Al Khatib's effort went just wide of the post shortly before the break as they looked to seize the initiative.

And they took the lead seven minutes into the second half when Al Khatib passed to Al Hussien on the edge of the area who then sent a powerful shot that got a deflection off of Kuwait defender Yaqoub Al Taher and went into the corner of the net beyond Nawaf Al Khaldi.

The home fans were up on their feet just before the hour mark when Al Khatib was fouled inside the area by Kuwait defender Hussein Fadhel but Jordanian Referee Salem Mujghef waved away appeals before giving a yellow card to the Syrian striker.

Kuwait tried to get back into the game but it was Syria who nearly scored a second goal after 76 minutes when second-half substitute Raja Rafe received a pass inside the area but Nawaf Al Khaldi blocked the ball with his body.

The visitors had one last chance with seven minutes remaining when Walied Ali's shot from outside the area was tipped behind for a corner by Syria goalkeeper Mosab Balhous.

DAMASCUS - Syria coach Mohammed Kwid was delighted with the performance of his team on Monday as they posted a 1-0 victory over Kuwait at Al Abbasiyyin Stadium in his first competitive match in charge.

Jehad Al Hussien scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute as Syria joined United Arab Emirates on five points at the top of Group Five in the Asian World Cup qualifiers.

"It was a good game for us although we only scored one goal,” said Kwid.

"In the first half we couldn't control the game and looked like we were the away team.

“We were surprised by Kuwait’s good defence. We didn't take advantage of the high balls and our best chances came from the neat passes on the ground.

“Kuwait had two chances to score and thing would have been difficult for us if they had taken those chances."

Kwid felt that his team were much improved after the half-time break.

"We controlled the game in the second half and after we took the lead, we missed two chances to score.

“As time passed, we tried to get back into defence and hold on to our lead.

"There were few mistakes but I must thank the players for their fighting spirit and concentration.

“All four teams in the group still have a chance to qualify and the two qualifying spots will probably only be determined in the last game."

Kuwait coach Rodion Gacanin was disappointed with the result, which has put his side’s hopes of reaching the next round in jeopardy.

"The pitch was not good for us and the big crowd affected our players,” he said. “Playing against Syria in such conditions was difficult for us.

"Our players were unlucky because we missed a couple of chances in the first half which could have turned the game in our favour.

“Meanwhile Syria won the game because they scored from the chance they had.

"This defeat has weakened our qualification hopes and we must win our next three matches and hope for other results to help us out to go through the next round."

2007 AFC Player of the Year Yasser Al Qahtani scored twice as Saudi Arabia beat Lebanon 4-1. (AFP)

RIYADH - Three second-half goals secured Saudi Arabia their second victory in Group Four of the Asian FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they defeated Lebanon 4-1 at King Fahad International Stadium on Monday.

Lebanon opened the scoring after 42 minutes through Mahmoud El Ali before Yasser Al Qahtani leveled the scores three minutes later while Osama Hawsawi scored the second goal for his side after 62 minutes.

Redha Tukar added a third with seven minutes remaining before Al Qahtani scored his second goal of the night in the last minute of the game.

After a slow start for both sides, Saudi Arabia had the first clear chance of the game after 30 minutes when skipper Al Qahtani received the ball inside the area before firing a powerful shot that was deflected by Lebanon defender Ali Al Saadi.

Saudi Arabia had another chance six minutes later when Malek Maaz made his way down the right flank before hitting an effort that was saved by Lebanon goalkeeper Lary Mehanna.

But it was Lebanon who opened the scoring two minutes before the break when Mohamad Ghaddar sent a cross from midfield to strike partner Mahmoud El Ali, who took advantage of a moment of confusion between Zaid Al Mowallad and goalkeeper Walied Abdullah before back-heeling into the net.

However, Lebanon's joy lasted for just two minutes as Saudi Arabia levelled the scores in the last minute of the first half when Al Mowallad sent a cross from the right inside the area and Al Qahtani made no mistake from close range.

Saudi Arabia made a good start to the second half and they should have taken the lead in the 49th minute when Al Qahtani struck from close range but the ball went into the side netting.

However, the home side scored their second goal two minutes after the hour mark when Mohammed Al Shalhoub hit a corner from the left that the Lebanese defenders failed to clear and Osama Hawsawi scored from close range to make it 2-1.

It was 3-1 after 83 minutes when Abdullah Shuhail's cross from the left was headed home by Redha Tukar before Al Qahtani sealed the win with his second in the last minute with a close-range effort after Mehanna blocked the shot from Shuhail.

Helio not altogether happy (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018664.html)

Head coach Helio dos Anjos was not completely satisfied despite seeing his side run out 4-1 winners. (AFP)

RIYADH - Saudi Arabia coach Helio dos Anjos feels that there is still plenty of room for improvement by his side despite their 4-1 win over Lebanon in a World Cup qualifier at King Fahad International Stadium on Monday.

Three second-half goals secured the Saudis their second victory in Group Four as they recovered from a 3-0 hammering by Uzbekistan in their last outing.

"It was a difficult match for us and I was surprised to see the Lebanese team play in a new style and change their tactics from their last match against Qatar,” said dos Anjos.

"Lebanon played very well and their players were very lively especially in the first half.

"I admired the Lebanese tactics as their team closed down the defensive line with six players in a very effective way.”

Dos Anjos admitted that he was not completely satisfied with the performance of his players.

"Although we scored four goals I am not satisfied with the performance of my team.

"Of course, we deal with players not machines, and I am concerned with the psychological well being of my squad.

"The unexpected 3-0 defeat against Uzbekistan in our last World Cup qualifier affected my players and against Lebanon, they seemed to be slower and more deliberate in playing the ball.

"The goal that we conceded is similar to the one we let in against Kuwait in our last friendly. I worked on that last week and warned my defenders but they did not learn.”

Meanwhile, Lebanon coach Emile Rustom felt that his side enjoyed a morale-boosting performance despite suffering their third consecutive defeat.

"We played a very strong match with one of the biggest teams in Asia and the defeat was expected,” he explained.

"We did not dream of winning before the game but my team played a very good match.

"After we scored the first goal, it was impossible to keep a clean sheet for more than 45 minutes against a strong team like Saudi Arabia.

"But we will try to do better that in our next game."

Singapore coach Raddy Avramovic looks on as the Uzbeks put on an attacking masterclass. (AFP)

SINGAPORE - Singapore coach Raddy Avramovic admitted that his side were beaten by a vastly superior team after the Lions were humbled 7-3 by Uzbekistan in a World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium on Monday.

The home side twice came from behind with goals by Aleksandar Duric and Mustafic Fahrudin cancelling out strikes by Timur Kapadze and Victor Karpenko, but Server Djeparov scored twice and Vitaly Denisov added another to put the visitors 5-2 up at half-time.

Aziz Ibragimov and Maksim Shatskikh struck for the Uzbeks after the interval while John Wilkinson bagged a consolation goal for the hosts.

But Avramovic chose to look on the positive side and revealed he would have been very happy if someone had told him before the match that Singapore would score three goals against the Group Four leaders.

"They didn't concede any goals in the matches against Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. If we score three goals in any other game, we would have won it," said the Singapore coach.

The Serbian felt that his team lost the battle in midfield and their defence looked non-existent at times.

"We were losing possession 30 metres from goal and we cannot afford to do that against a team like Uzbekistan," he said.

Avramovic added that Shatskikh was the main threat for the Uzbeks as he pulled players out of position, opening things up for the midfielders to run in and create chances.

Uzbekistan coach Rauf Inileev claimed it was a satisfactory result for his side and felt that Singapore did not prove to be easy opponents.

Inileev said that the high-scoring match was a result of open football being played by both sides.

"When you have two sides who have a great desire to score, there will be an opportunity for such a big result," said the Uzbek coach, who left hurriedly with his team to catch their charter flight immediately after the game.

Inileev added that Singapore's Aleksandar Duric was the biggest threat for the hosts but noted the striker's age of 37 may have been the main reason why he could not last the entire match.

Hat-trick of draws for Iran (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018656.html)

Bashar Al Hamadi slides in on Masoad Shojei as the UAE draws 0-0 with Iran in Tehran. (AFP)

TEHRAN – Iran remained winless in Group Five of the Asian World Cup qualifiers after being held to a goalless draw by group leaders United Arab Emirates at the Azadi Stadium on Monday.

The draw kept UAE at the top of the group with five points, two ahead of the Iranians, who have been held to three consecutive draws so far in the qualifiers.

The home side dominated the first half but Ali Daei's men were unable to create any clear-cut chances for much of the time against an Emirates side content to sit back and absorb pressure.

However the Iranian attacks became more dangerous in the last five minutes before the interval and Seyed Hadi Aghily nearly broke the deadlock when he met Masoud Shojaei’s corner from the right with a first-time shot that went over the crossbar.

Iran had a pair of quick chances a minute later as Hossein Kaebi’s cross from the left was turned by Alireza Vahedi Nikbakht into the side netting and, seconds later, Shojaei's shot from outside the area went wide.

The home side continued to ask the questions at the start of the second half and had another opening two minutes after the restart as a free kick by Shojaei was turned wide by Seyed Jalal Hosseini.

Iran threatened again in the 49th minute as Kaebi’s cross from the right was met with a powerful header by Vahedi Nikbakht that flew over the crossbar.

UAE responded three minutes later reply through Abdulraheem Juma, who received a pass from the left and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box that shaved the right post.

The visitors had an appeal for penalty on the hour when Aghily brought down Ismail Matar in the box but Korean referee Lee Gi-young was uninterested and allowed play to continue.

The Emirates had their best chance with 20 minutes remaining as a cross from the left by Juma picked out substitute Faisal Khalil, who headed wide.

Iran nearly stole a winner with five minutes remaining when skipper Javad Nekounam met a cross from the left with a powerful header that goalkeeper Majed Nasser did well to tip over for a corner.

Looks like Turkmenistan missed a twice taken penalty vs Nroth Korea

Don’t blame Gochguly, says coach (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_167018648.html)

Turkmenistan coach Rakhim Kurbanmamedov offered his support to skipper Gochguly Gochguliyev, who missed a twice taken penalty against DPR Korea.

ASHGABAT - Turkmenistan coach Rahim Kurbanmamedov refused to lay the finger of blame on his captain Gochguly Gochguliyev for missing a twice-taken penalty as the Central Asian side drew 0-0 with DPR Korea at the Olympic Stadium on Monday.

Turkmenistan have yet to score in the third round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers but Kurbanmamedov did not want to assign any blame on Gochguliyev for missing the early opportunity to put his team ahead.

"It is not easy to score from a penalty and I do not blame any of my players for missing from the penalty spot," said the Turkmenistan boss.

Kurbanmamedov instead praised the effort of his players as they picked up the first point of their Group Three campaign.

"The Turkmenistan team demonstrated good teamwork today and I am very satisfied with the match and my players.

"We showed that we were well prepared for the game and with more time, the team can improve their skills and play better."

Turkmenistan remained in last place in the group but Kurbanmamedov has not thrown in the towel yet on his side's hopes of advancing to the final round of the Asian qualifiers.

"There is still a chance of success and as long as there is a chance, we will continue to battle.

"Of course, our fate is no longer in our hands and we have to depend on other results to progress. But I remain optimistic."

A victory for the North Koreans would have sent them two points clear at the top of the group but as a result o the draw, they trail southern neighbours Korea Republic on goal difference at the midway point of the campaign.

"We are not used to playing in such weather as it was very hot in Turkmenistan but we are not satisfied with the result of today's match," said DPR Korea coach Kim Jong-hun.

"We created a lot of chances but were unable to score because our players could not keep their composure in front of goal.

"The Turkmenistan goalkeeper also showed good ability. He had a very good game and made some good saves.

"We must now plan for the return game in Pyongyang and consider what changes have to be made to our line-up for the match."

who I predict will progress to the next round, based on current form:

Australia
Qatar
Bahrain
Japan
South Korea
North Korea
Uzbekistan
Saudi Arabia
UAE
Iran

and Adelaide and Perth should get a home game each against the two lowest ranked teams in their group - i.e. North Korea, UAE, Bahrain...

In the next stage are we "protected" from Qatar/China/Iraq, or is it completely random

Disappointed about Thailand, they're fucked now. The Uzbeks look a real threat, and look like one to be avoided and away game would be tough, how long would it take to get to Uzbek, there would be some serious stopovers, but at the same time some of the Middle East opposition pose the dreaded 40+ temps. Some of the established powers still seem to be struggling a bit to get out of 3rd gear, will be interesting to see if any get themselves in a pickle on the last day, most have substantially easier groups than us

We certainly will have earned it if we qualify

Wouldn't Uzbekistan be easier to get to for the Euro players? If my geography is correct, it's basically Russia.

Yeah it's closer to Europe. I think it's north of Afghanistan.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup fourth round draw for Asia will take place on June 27, 2008.

KUALA LUMPUR: The long and winding road for Asian teams to the 2010 FIFA World Cup will enter its final stretch with the draw for the fourth and last round of qualifiers at AFC House on June 27, 2008.

The keenly awaited draw on Friday at 1700 hours local time will see 10 teams – top two from the five groups who are currently playing in the third round which culminates on June 22 – coming out of the pots to be divided into two groups of five each.

The winners and runners-up of these two groups will represent Asia at the first ever FIFA World Cup in Africa in 2010. The third placed teams in both groups will clash in a home-and-away playoff with the winners going into another double-legged playoff against an Oceania Football Confederation team for a spot in the biggest football show on earth.

Australia, Japan, Korea Republic, Iran and Saudi Arabia qualified for the previous World Cup in Germany but only the Socceroos managed to clear the group stage.

The gruelling fourth phase schedule involves 10 match days, kicking into life on September 6, 2008, before the identity of the four automatic qualifiers becomes clear on June 17, 2009.

For the half-berth beckoning Asia, the intra-continental playoff dates are October 10, 2009, and October 14, 2009, while the action shifts to the inter-continental level against an Oceania team on November 14, 2009, and November 21, 2009.

The 32-team draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals (June 11-July 11) will take place in Cape Town in December 2009.

Will probably get its own thread closer to the date discussiong Australia specifically but will chuck this article here for generalised discussion featuring everyone

Very interesting that AFC will be playing Oceania this time and not Concacaf and Conmebol respectively, Oceania will effectively be New Zealand

Hopefully Australia, provided we get through of course which we are likely to do at this stage, finishes in the Top Two of their group and progresses automatically without having to go through a playoff vs an Asian team and then Oceania, let's have this wrapped up by June next year!

I think this nicely alludes to their base potential, like we have a natural capacity to adpat to Europe/Western Europe, they have a potential to go via a different route, ie through (good) Eastern Europe, which despite has Romanian League 2 which is what we are trying to avoid for our players, has teams in the UCL like Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine made last World Cup) and now Russia etc, if they get their act together they can have more people developing

KYIV – Uzbekistan striker Maksim Shatskikh is set to join Russian Premier League side Krylia Sovetov Samara, bringing the curtain down on a hugely successful spell with Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv.

Shatskikh, who netted his 29th international goal in 38 matches during Uzbekistan’s 7-3 World Cup qualifying win over Singapore on Monday, joined Dynamo in 1999 as a replacement for the AC Milan-bound Andriy Shevchenko and became an immediate hit at the Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium, scoring a season-best 20 times as the Bilo-Syni (white-blues) won the 1999/2000 league and cup double.

The 29-year-old helped Dynamo claim four more league and four more cup titles (with doubles in 2003 and 2007) scoring 118 times in 244 domestic matches, winning the Ukraine league top-scorer award for the second time in 2002/03 with a record-equalling 22 goals.

Shatskikh is also the most prolific Asian in European club competition having scored 23 times in 70 games.

They can become a bit of a force IMO, just have to pull it together, which they look like doing and which the AFC's ACL requirements etc has motivated and stimulated them into doing

I liked the ranga model from Canada I was talking to, she was one of the best looking rangas I'd ever met!

Uzebekistan would be an interesting away trip, however I couldnt justify spending over $2000 in flights for one match. If it happened to be MD 1 or MD 2 and the other MD was also an away leg or MD 8 and MD 9 with both of those legs being away legs, then I could justify it, would also try and throw in a sneaky trip to Thailand on the way there or on the way back!

PYONGYANG – DPR Korea coach Kim Jong-hun will be hoping that the cooler conditions of Pyongyang will prove more agreeable to his side when they face Turkmenistan in a World Cup qualifier at Kim Il-sung Stadium on Saturday.

The North Koreans struggled in the heat of Ashgabat on Monday as they were held to a goalless draw by the Central Asian side, which prevented them from moving ahead of southern neighbours Korea Republic into top spot in Group Three.

But with temperature expected to be more than ten degrees Celsius cooler in the North Korean capital this weekend, Kim is hopeful of an improved performance by his team.

“We are not used to playing in such weather as it was very hot in Turkmenistan,” said Kim, describing the first meeting between the teams in Ashgabat.

Despite his misgivings about the weather, Kim felt that his side should have got more from last Monday’s game, which they dominated after surviving an early penalty miss by the home side.

“We created a lot of chances but were unable to score because our players could not keep their composure in front of goal,” said the DPR Korea coach.

“The Turkmenistan goalkeeper (Bayramniyaz Berdiyev) also showed good ability. He had a very good game and made some good saves.

“We must now plan for the return game in Pyongyang and consider what changes have to be made to our line-up for the match.”

One enforced change will be the exclusion of forward Jong Tae-se, who is suspended after picking up his second yellow card of the campaign.

Despite seeing his team pick up the first point in Group Three, Turkmenistan coach Rahim Kurbanmamedov knows that they face an uphill battle if they are to stay alive in the competition.

The Central Asians are four points adrift of the two Koreas and while Kurbanmamedov is not about the throw in the towel, he is r
