There is an enormous amount of South American managers/coaches that managed Asian teams with a lot of success (both at club and national level).

Can we investigate which Asians teams have/had high profile coaches how succesful they are/were and maybe compile a bit of a list of managers MVFC could look into once Merrick's ontract run out?

Just to get the ball rolling:

Osvaldo Ardiles managed in Japan and was even chosen J.league manager of the year (not sure which year, a long time ago)

Pohang Steelers manager is Sergio Farias from Brazil.
Kashima Antlers manager is Oswaldo de Oliveira from Brazil.

ANY foreign manager would do. Someone mentioned Holger Osieck; I think he'd be great here, we have a lot in common with the Urawa Reds.

just trawling thru wiki on the J-League:

Kashima: currently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oswaldo_de_Oliveira
have had several other brazilian coaches, including Zico and Joao Carlos.

Kawasaki: have had three: Jose, Beto, Zeca, but have a local manager atm.

Shimizu S-Pulse: have had three, most recently Antoninho in 2004.

Urawa: german coaches going back to 04, two brazilians in 01 (Tita, Pita). Under Dutch coach Hans Ooft the won the league cup in 03. (also took Japan to win the Asian Cup)

Yokohama Marinos: currently and recently local managers, in 01-02 had Sebastiao Lazaroni and won the J-League Cup, he is now in Portugal.

Kashiwa Reysol: have had 4 Brazilian managers:Ze Sergio, Antoninho, Nicanor, Marco Aurelio.

Júbilo Iwata: in o6-07 finished 5th in J1 under Adilson.

Vissel Kobe: dropped to J2 in 05 under Emerson Leao. (from the vissel kobe wiki there is a link to the interesting wiki entry on Leandro Love, btw...)

Nagoya: Most recently Nelsinho in 03-05, generally finishing mid table.

Oita Trinita: Currently under Brazilian manager Pericles Chamusca, according to wiki...

Tokyo Verdy: have had Vadao, Leandro, Lori paulo Sandri at some point over the past 8 years. Under Argentinian Osvaldo Ardiles won the Emperor's Cup ion 2004, Super Cup in 05, were mid-table in J1 in 03-04 but were relegated to J2 in 05.

Vegalta Sendai: In 2006 finished 5th in J2 under Joel Santana.

I think this task is above the MV board (not this board, the real one).

They are FFA pre 2005.

He would be one coach I would really love to have at Melbourne. I dont think he's being paid too much at Sepahan either, but we might need to break the bank to get him.

There is a lot of South American coaches in Asia, but most are concentrated in the J-league or the Middle East. These areas have traditionally drawn upon South American talent to harness their domestic development in the game, something Australia has rarely, if ever done before.

At the present moment i think Oswaldo de Oliveira and Jorvan Viera are about the two best coaches in Asia.

Here are some south american coaches in other leagues:
- Paulo Autuori de Mello - Al-Rayyan Sports Club. He has a few honours to his name, most notably he won the Copa Libertadores with Cruzerio and won the FIFA Club World Championship with Sao Paulo.

- Marcos Paquetá - Al-Gharafa. Coached Saudi's in the 2006 World Cup and in 2003 won the U-17 and U-20 championships as coach of Brazil.
