AFC announces award for AFC Match Commissioners (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_166363299.html)
21 April 2008

KUALA LUMPUR: AFC has added yet another award, this time to honour AFC Match Commissioners, to its roll-call of AFC Annual Awards which salute and honour excellence in the Asian game and has been an annual, keenly-awaited event in the Asian football calendar since 1994.

AFC Match Commissioners perform a key role in successful organisation of matches across the continent and the new award is to recognise and honour their achievements, thus providing a greater incentive to spur them towards performance enhancement.

To be considered for the award, candidates must have:

• Accepted at least five (5) appointments in a year

• Adhered to and ensured full compliance of AFC policies and regulations by teams

• Demonstrated sound judgment and problem solving skills when faced with problems on the ground

• Submitted all reports in time (within 24 hours of the match)

• Reports should be in detail and a true reflection of the actual events

This year’s AFC Women’s Awards will be held in Kuala Lumpur on November 20 while the men’s will be held in Shanghai on November 25.

AFC Player of the Year criteria revised (http://www.the-afc.com/eng/articles/viewArticle.jsp_166363363.html)
21 April 2008

KUALA LUMPUR: AFC has revised the criteria for selecting the AFC Player of the Year 2008 to infuse more transparency into the process.

Choice of the winner is still based on a weighted ranking system which takes into account performances at major AFC and FIFA tournaments but a four-pronged rationalised approach will be adopted this year.

The new process will take into account the points awarded by AFC Match Commissioners, Technical Study Group, Technical Analysts and, last but not the least, the fans for selecting an MVP of the match.

The match commissioners will nominate an MVP for all the home-and-away games while the technical study group members will select the MVPs in centralised AFC competitions.

Two technical analysts will watch DVDs of the matches and nominate their MVPs, independent of the other, while fans will be invited to nominate their choice for each match through the AFC's official website - www.the-afc.com.

The MVP of the match will be awarded to the player who has received the most nominations from among the match commissioners or TSG, the two technical analysts and the fans.

In case the match commissioner/TSG and fans select a player as an MVP while the technical analysts chose another player, the choice of the latter will be MVP of the match. If the match commissioner and one technical analyst chose a player while another technical analyst and fans chose another, both the players will be selected as MVPs but the points given for this match will be split between the two. In the event that all four parties chose a different player, a third technical analyst will be invited to break the tie.

The total number of points awarded to players will be calculated at the end of the season and players who have accumulated the most number of points will be invited to the AFC Annual Awards to be held in Shanghai on November 25 and will be presented with a nomination trophy.

The winner will be picked among the nominated players by a five-member panel. The panel, which will be present at the awards ceremony, will include a match commissioner, a renowned media representative, a national team coach, a coach from the AFC Champions League 2008 participating clubs, and a coach from the AFC Cup 2008 participating clubs.

Schwarzer, Bresciano vying for AFC award (http://news.theage.com.au/schwarzer-bresciano-vying-for-afc-award/20080422-27uy.html)
April 22, 2008 - 5:49PM

Socceroos Mark Schwarzer and Mark Bresciano have received early nominations for the Asian Football Confederation's player of the year award.

The pair were named among a list of 21 contenders for the annual award which will be whittled down to three ahead of the announcement of the winner in Shanghai on November 25.

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Schwarzer and Palermo midfielder Bresciano were included on their list after impressive performances in Australia's World Cup qualifying wins against Qatar and China.

Also on the list was Tottenham defender Lee Young-pyo and Fulham winger Seol Ki-hyeon.

While the European-based players were the star nominees, Bahrain and Singapore dominated in the numbers department with three players nominated each.

Australia, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Asian champions Iraq have two players each in contention.

The procedure for selecting the best player in Asia has been overhauled this year "to inject more transparency in the process."

Choosing the winner will still be based on a weighted ranking system which takes into account performances at major Asian Football Confederation and FIFA tournaments.

But a four-pronged rationalised approach has been adopted, taking into account points awarded by AFC match commissioners, a technical study group, technical analysts and fans.

Last year's winner, Saudi Arabian goal-machine Yasser Al Qahtani, was not among the nominees.

Adelaide United midfielder Travis Dodd was Australia's sole nominee for last year's award.I thought you had to actually play in Asia to be eligible? I didn't think European based players were eligible.

More transparent?

I have no idea how they can make up that list in that way.

What weighting is there on 'asian' games. And fifa tournaments? Must be a weird methodolgy to wind up picking out those 2 aussies and yet no mention of some others (like cahill).

The AFC awards are a joke, it should just like every other continent, the best player, regardless of where he plays.

I can't understand how Tim Cahill has not been nominated either?
