I would say Perspolis. What other asian club can fill up a 100 000 seater stadium with thousands of people outside the stadium as well?

They should be in the ACL next year.

Wikipedia reckons only Dalian Shide and Al-Hilal "have similar support in Asia." May be Urawa could get a mention in top 5-6..
Look out for Perth Glory though, they are on the rise!

Their 18,000 crowd average says otherwise.

Crowd average doesn't tell the whole story in terms of support base.
Juve has the most fans in Italy but their crowd average isn't the highest

given all the ppl indicated they are not attending tomorrow nights match via a lack of interest etc it appears MVFC could be heading down the path of having a large supporter base that is not reflected in attendances.
what about indonesian clubs? anyone know of any there that have speakable backing? they got solid attendances in the AC..

Kashima has the most fans in JapanI would still argue that Urawa > Kashima. Not by much, but Urawa's fans always turn out. Kashima's do not.
Take a look at ACL attendances. Urawa pretty much sold out all it's games last year, Kashima are only getting 7000.

whats the official (if there is one) way of measuring popularity? shirts/merch sold or bums on seats/feet on terraces?

Supporters Clubs maybe, but that can be flawed as well because not every supporter will join them and most don't. Then shirt sales can be misleading too... in the end, it's actually quite subjective in how you interprete the data.

Esteghlal fill the same stadium. But its not full every time either team steps out. I went to an Esteghlal game a few years ago against SAIPA I think it was and there were about 25-30K there...

It's called Iran. Women don't do a whole lot there.

100,000 men escaping from their wives. The only true measure of support is how many people come to every game.... but also you should factor in the price relating to the salary... compare the prices in Japan to say Iran.... v the average salary.... Barcelona probably have the largest average in Europe as they have the biggest stadium however their ticket prices are not as high as other places.

Simon Hill wrote an article in a june magazine which talks about Indian football. In it he says Indian club Mohan Bagan are said to be the oldest club in Asia and when they play their derby vs East Bengal they get crowds of 80,000..
Apparently Kolkata and Goa are football hotbeds.. if the Indian market is ever tapped and the locals get on board then they are likely to build some of the biggest and most popular clubs in the world..

Esteghlal averages about 58,000 per match. Perspolis 68,000. The next best after that gets around 15-20,000

Is he a regular with Sunderland? Interesting... With the number of Indians and the time they have been in England, by now, there should be more of them... so they really are shite at football or there is still an element of racism behind it.
How much is the cost into the Persolis stadium? Is it more expensive in relation to the cost of living, than in Australia? Or Japan or wherever?

The best player India has ever produced is Baichung Bhutia, formerly of Bury.
You have to wonder about these countries.

Perspolis are a bunch of poofs.

Its not their stadium, its the National Stadium - the Azadi Stadium. I was about 15 when I went there and didn't pay but I'm fairly sure its cheap - even by local standards. I'd say its probably the equivalent of $5-$10 for us which over there would be $1 - $2 I'd estimate...
This could be wildly wrong but it seems reasonable to me.
fwiw, the low-income earners in Iran get fucking shafted. Not sure they'd be able to afford going to games...they'd only earn a few dollars a day.
