China's World Cup bid ends in recriminations (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=546895&cc=3436)

TIANJIN, China, June 14 (Reuters) - Captain Zheng Zhi was reduced to tears and fans called for wholesale sackings after China's campaign to qualify for the 2010 World Cup fizzled out with a 2-1 defeat to Iraq on Saturday.

After missing out on South Africa, China's next World Cup opportunity in Brazil 2014 will probably be too late for players in their late 20s such as Zheng.

'We didn't play well enough, I am very sad,' the Charlton midfielder told CCTV as he wiped away tears of disappointment.

The moribund state of Chinese football was reflected in the half empty Olympic Stadium, which was built to host soccer matches for the Beijing Games this August and the venue for China's final two home games in Asian qualifying Group One.

The 30,000 or so fans who did pay out to watch a second defeat in as many weeks at the impressive arena were quick to turn on those they deemed responsible.

'Sack! Sack! Sack!' they shouted after Iraq took the lead while hundreds gathered outside after the match angrily calling for the team and the entire Chinese Football Association (CFA) to be dismissed as well as an apology from CFA chief Xie Yalong.

Vladimir Petrovic, who has had charge of the team under fellow Serb and China Olympic coach Ratomir Dujkovic since last year, said he thought his players had not shown sufficient composure in the two matches in Tianjin.

'We have young players who needed to calm down a bit,' he told reporters. 'I think nerves cost us the two games. The players had too much pressure on them.'

Petrovic said he thought the group stage of the qualifying campaign, during which China have so far failed to win a match and scored only two goals, had not been a complete failure.

'I think we have discovered many young players who will play in the Olympic Games and are the bright future of Chinese football,' he added.

Asked if he would still be in charge for China's final group match in Australia on June 22, Petrovic grinned.

'I think so, I think so,' he said.

Another Serbian coach at the match was Bora Milutinovic, who took the Chinese to their only appearance at the World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan in 2002 when soccer was booming in China.

'It's always a sad when you don't go through,' he told Reuters. 'I hope they find a way to get back to the top, 2000 to 2002 were wonderful but things are very different now.' @ China

If they didn't leave a 50 metre radius around Iraq's players in their defensive area, then yeah, maybe they would of won.

Fuckheads.

China's shit, but FIFA might just pull some strings to let them through. The Iraq FA is still in trouble, and Qatar may yet be penalised for fielding an ineligible player against Iraq.

Lowy has said that making South Africa 2010 is crucial to our 2018 world cup bid. Seeing as China is now out. It presumably boosts our chances of being the sole Asian bidder that the AFC want.

Even though Australia made the last World Cup, and will make the next one :), it must be a strange feeling of not qualifying and knowing that it will be at least another 6 years of your life before you see your country play at a world cup. Tears @ China

China's youth teams have done reasonably well of late, but the problem is the coaches are often way too conservative and this is reflected towards the players.

I like those guys, they think the way I do. Your team fails, they can start looking for new citizenship, 'cause they're never playing for your national team again.

dunno why they can never get their shit together.
there are a fair few chinese players in europe. many more than the qatari's and iraq's.
the chinese super league isnt a bad league. the teams are competitive against the japanese, koreans and a-league.
but for some reason when it comes to the national team, things just die in the arse.

amount of players in europe does not make an accurate assessment on the worth of a nation. take the asian cup as an extended example.

Possibly helps us that extra 1% in a world cup big if Asia supports us over them in part to them failing to do anything.

The talent shown at youth competitions have been highly rated by scouts in Europe. So I suspect the next generation of players would be far superior, but knowing the conservativeness of the team, would they actually get a game?

China failing should help our World Cup bid.

If they cannot make the World Cup (hell, they can't even get out of the first stage of qualifying), then why should they host a World Cup?

They've only ever made it once, and that was in 2002 when the two best Asian sides (Japan/Sth Korea) didn't have to qualify.

South Africa aren't exactly lock on's to qualify everytime for the WC.
They most likely wouldn't have qualified for 2010 had they not been hosts.

Didn't affect the difficulty of qualification. There were 2.5 spots that time instead of the normal 4.5 spots.

Well, FIFA had their heart set on Africa, and sadly, South Africa is the best part of Africa.

it does help our chances bidding to host, as afc would only support one bid from asia i believe.

True we havent qualified yet, but if we do it will be sweet.
