Foreign players to know fate today
The FA of Malaysia (FAM) Council will meet today to decide on the foreign players’ fate.
The council, headed by FAM president Sultan Ahmad Shah, will deliberate on the findings of the two-day brain-storming session organised last month.
The two-day session concluded that the presence of these foreign players had more cons than pros on Malaysian football.
Judging from the feedback from coaches and officials, it appears that the FAM are likely to close the door on the imports for a second time since the 2001-2002 season.
The majority of the State FAs are also against foreign players. But theirs is for a different reason – financial constraint.
FAM competitions committee chairman Datuk Che Mat Jusoh said that whatever decision is taken by the Council would be in the best interest of the national team.
“We are going to put the national team above all. Everything we plan will be in line with the objective of the national team,” said Che Mat, who is also a FAM vice-president.
The Super League, launched in 2004, was supposed to mark a new chapter in Malaysian football.
The brainchild of former FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, the league was supposed to yield results – positive signs and changes in the overall structure, organisation and attitude of the officials and players – in three years.
Unfortunately, Malaysian football’s fortunes continued to spiral downwards, going from bad to worse.
FAM had, in 1989, introduced a Semi-Pro League before turning it fully pro in 1994.
The results have been the same – mediocre at best.
Even the national team, whose last major success was qualifying for the Moscow Olympics in 1980, have struggled to make an impact at regional level.
The national team are now ranked 166th, behind the likes of Seychelles, Myanmar and Mauritius.
This was on Saturday, and apparently all foreign players have had their contracts cancelled.

snap up the good ones before japan does, i say...
poor buggers in malaysia, i think that's an incredibly hard decision they've had to make.
any idea of crowds etc? i'm guessing they get small crowds, so they figure the imports aren't attracting any, they may as well concentrate on locals... ?

Interesting decision, given the top scorers in their league for the past 5 seasons have been foreigners! Mostly seems to be Africans, could be some decent signings available. Doubt the A-League coaches will be on the ball enough to take advantage though.
A shitload of Australians have played in Malaysia in past years.
From wiki...
Foreign Players
The professionalism of some teams have also been questioned. Most Malaysia Super League teams view foreign players as a necessity and as a result, most teams usually fill up their rosters with unknown foreigners. Teams usually sign foreigners based on their performances in pre-season trials. It is not uncommon for foreign players to be released after just two or three matches or be kept on the sidelines for an entire season.
The last case of unprofessional conduct involved Ivan Ziga, a Slovakian player who plays for Sarawak FA. Ivan Ziga claims his contract was terminated nine-months early without any explanation. He also claimed he was not paid. He took his plight to the Football Association of Malaysia but received no reply until Ivan Ziga threatened to take the case to FIFA.
Ivan Ziga's case is not uncommon in Malaysia, with most other cases involving African players who are either not paid or left stranded when their contracts are terminated early without any proper explanation given by teams.

I was in Malaysia a fortnight back, and the highlights package had some great goals... mostly scored by foreign players. What a retrograde decision.
It would be arrogant in the least to suggest some of these guys couldn't cut it in Australia. (What would continental Europeans say about our league??)
Here is an example of one of their better recent players, Keita Mandjou. Seems he is good enough to try out in Ligue 1.

I'm pretty sure Perth's new Argentine bloke came froma Malaysian club, so he will be a good measure.

I'm on board with the general sentiment in your post, but let me just clarify, imvho, jules baga is a pretty ordinary player and his goal against Victory in the ACL was a complete fluke. As a local resident, I went to the Chonburi home game on Saturday night and he was awful. He mostly plays off the bench, even in league games.
But like I said, I agree with your sentiment, there are some absolute gems floating around in the Asian leagues just needing an opportunity.
Anyone looking for a great left sided player should take a look at Arthit of Chonburi as an example.

Agree with Baga's goal being a massive fluke but good though

having lived in malaysia for 12 years, i can say that the league is completely shite and useless. No one bothers with the league really and the standard is poor beyond belief. Also i'm not surprised at this. The crowds aren't big and there's not much money around the place
