Support is the magic word.
What where they supporting???
Definetly not supporting the game...
Yeah, thats pretty much what I'm saying. Both Supporters are as bad as each other. But Preston seem to have more passion (or is that hatred?)

The only problem is its political passion, south demonstrated passion against northern spirit, parramata power etc and even last year in the vpl, put preston up against any team that isnt an ethnic rival and they dont care. Look at the croatians and how they use to be, once they gained independence as a country and the viduka days went by the way side their was nothing their for them and they dropped to 1,000 fans per game, Preston is similar, give them an independent macedonia and over half their fans have nothing to go for anymore. Its sad but thats how it goes, South doesnt have anywhere near the amount of political fans, our problem is getting the nsl fans back to the vpl.

i agree with hellas7, at frankston last year south fans were going crazy, there is no ethnic nrivalry with the pines not even geographical rivalry

I agree with that about some of the supporters, but that isnt the number 1 reason, off the mark actually, last year was the first time south and preston had met for competition points in around 15 years, while south was getting 12,000 against the likes of perth and parramata in front of good atmospheres, preston fans were throwing rocks with heidelberg supporters!
If we were in the 80s i'd buy into it, but thats simply not the reason.

Altona fans are great people and its a wonderful and succesful club, the lot from the northern suburbs are just a confused bunch who love the fact that south, knights, heidelberg are all in the same competition as themselves so they can try and play their little ethnic games.
At the end of the day south melbourne is the big losser, because some day down the track we are perhaps the only vpl club capable of gaining an A league lisence, so not good at all.

Preston and SMFC have issues but your kidding yourself if you blame this for Soccer Australia's incompetance in the last 10 years.
Read the Crawford report before you bother lamenting that ethnic rivalry caused the collapse of Soccer Australia.

MDL, calm down my little woodland friend.
No one is saying the NSL was perfect. No one is suggesting the A-league is perfect.
The issue is how can we solve the problem of idiots ruining the game.
Banning clubs is not the issue. We all have to co-exist.
Football should come first, having a healthy rivalry is great but not at the expense of losing your eye because you want to see your club play.

No preston fans walked past any cc boys which just shows your full of it as the ground was segregated lol, even before the match it didnt fill up until almost kick off time. Nice try and yes please let me know of other matches. Dont run with the " in the car park" trick either becuase nothing happened out there!
If you were sitting between the rival fans my guess would be you were in the grandstand on the opposite side otherwise being in between the fans would mean you were allongside the barracades abbusing someone lol as their was a fair distance between both sets of fans, the only ones that got close to eachother were ones that wanted trouble, let me tell you if their insults flying face to face or someone walking past it would have been on for young and old.
The baiting went on from both sides but reached rioting point at around 5 mins before match when a defaced greek flag was produced and a banner that said "cc property of preston" this was all before kick off so how is that for beating, of course our braindead lot lost the plot by this stage and it was all she wrote.

That was your perception & the club has tried a little bit(not as much as they could) to be more inclusive, but the perception-hence reality of most non-Greeks who went to SM was the opposite. Well not all greeks like soccer here, many just watch greek league and thats it, tons of greeks cant stand south melbourne and support rival clubs eg heidelberg, oakliegh... whoever so its not that simple.
The club had to be careful when trying to become more inclusive, take out the greek theme all together and you risk losing all the oldies and the ones that have been around forever, as has shown that was a massive risk, as the new breed have very much turned to victory and we very well could have been left with nothing, under the circumstances the club did try, constantly gave free tickets out to non greeks, irishmen lol that was a laugh, clubs like melbourne knights did absolutely nothing, by 2002,2003,2004 when derbies would come around south would always be the preferred choice amongst non greeks and non croatians when it came to just backing one or the other. Of course we didnt exactly capture the mainstreams imagination but we tapped into it a little bit which was good.

Its the older loyal fans, the ones that can only speak greek who have been there for 30 years rain, hail or shine, if the risk taken to broadbase the club doesnt work and you lose the oldies you got nothing, so its best to try and get it in the middle without going too far. Under the circumstances we could have done a lot worse and as it turned out it wasnt bad.

That was your perception & the club has tried a little bit(not as much as they could) to be more inclusive, but the perception-hence reality of most non-Greeks who went to SM was the opposite. Even alot of Greeks like myself never liked the overtly Greek theme of the club, which explains crowds of 10,000(max) with a Greek population in Melbourne of hundreds of thousands.
Jesus MDL for a guy that goes and watches Bullen you tend to think you know alot about SMFC...
I know a lot of Greeks that don't support South because
1. They hate South (ie Heidelberg)
2. Prefer not to travel so they ened up watching Oakleigh or other local teams as they can't be ****ed driving or have sons playing in teams
3. And there are those that don't go to South or Heidelberg games (during NSL days) cos they think that the standard was not up to scratch. These guys have the same attitude when it comes to Victory. They've tried Victory didn't like what they saw and have never gone back.
The demographics of the club have changed slowly since I started supporting the club in 1977. The club needs to change in order to survive. The socalled loyal supporters will be dead in the next 10 to 15 years. The club does not need to sell its soul, but also does not need to be trapped by its past or the die hard relics that go to the games.......
This is an issue not only for South, but Preston, the Knights etc etc......

You hear change the name, change the colours.........nothing needs to be changed as long as there is a change in attitude and the way they look at running their operations....And the board they have at the moment are the right people are making the right noises....

Assuming every Greek Loves Football...
200,000 Greeks Speaking Australians in Melbourne. SMFC averaged 7 K in the NSL
4,000,000 Melbournians , MVFC attracting 16K to their games.
MDL you're making SMFC look rather good.
I struggle to see an African or Asian at the Victory games...

So you like to seperate the animals and people with a fence.
We live in harmony in Melbourne. We don't tolerate violence or racism in work, or in other enviroments. In today's society we have jails and zoos to separate people from animals.
Give me another solution.

- Kick out the ones that make trouble for maybe a week, month even a year.
- Have MORE police at all games as you said "In today's society we have jails"!
- No ethnic things around, so that way no one will have a reason to do enything
and i cant be ****ed to think of more
