Melbourne Victory to create youth academy by 2017/18

The Team

As revealed in last night’s Victory’s Secret on the For Vuck’s Sake podcast, a youth academy is on its way to Melbourne Victory.

This is something that has been very high on the board’s agenda for quite some time and something that Ange Postecoglu was looking to create during his time as manager. The proposed academy will serve all ages from the very young, as well as (U/12 upwards) to current youth teams. MELBOURNEVICTORY.NET have it on good authority that the club is currently looking in the North-Western suburbs of Melbourne for land to purchase to build a large high performance center, not dissimilar from the current HPC that house AFL club Essendon in Tullarmarine.

It’s a great development and great news. As much as we all despise The City Group, they have actually given the Heart franchise some relevance and clout, which has in some ways forced our board to remain vigilant and not stand still despite our successes. Creating an acadamy will enbale us to establish strong grassroots pathways for juniors and build our own dynasty.

A main sticking point will be the reaction from the stronger NPL teams, such as South Melbourne and Melbourne Knights, who have worked hard to develop their own youth teams. There will be quite a bit of opposition from those sides if their programs are gutted with Melbourne Victory and City cherry picking the best young talent in the state.

The Victory will be looking to enter junior teams into the NPL system from 2017/18 onward. MELBOURNEVICTORY.NET will update you on any further details once we know.
